Skirtmas: Modcloth Plaid Pencil Skirt {Day 12}

Hello friend! Somehow the last day of Skirtmas is already upon us. I’ve had a great time showing you 12 new skirts and how to style them. I thought I’d finish off the series with a favorite pattern mix of mine: gingham and plaid. To do so I am featuring a lovely Modcloth plaid pencil skirt.

Modcloth Plaid Pencil Skirt Review

I adore Modcloth for their vintage vibe and feminine styles. I also find it so endearing that they give their items of clothing fun names. For example the skirt I am wearing is actually called the “Care to Converse?” pencil skirt. So cute!

When I first saw this skirt, I was immediately drawn to its mid-calf length and vintage style. Of course, it didn’t hurt that it was plaid. We all know how much I love a plaid. {If you love plaid too, be sure to see this plaid skirt post as well as this plaid and lace post.}

The fit of the skirt is divine. It is high-waisted and a true pencil skirt. However, because of the pleats on the sides and back hem, it is quite easy to walk.

It is a thin to medium heft polyester blend. It does not wrinkle easily. I took my usual Modcloth size small (for a point of reference, I am often XS in other brands like J Crew).

Modcloth Plaid Pencil Skirt Outfit

Similar to Skirtmas day 7, I wanted to pattern mix with this skirt. I was itching to try another plaid on plaid look and I knew the Modcloth plaid pencil skirt would be perfect for it. Therefore I threw on my J Crew gingham button-down and was thrilled with the results.

This is a perfectly harmonious pattern mix because of the blue that is in both pieces of clothing. You can read more about it in my pattern mixing 101 post.

To accessorize this outfit, I chose to keep it simple. Because there is a color and print in both pieces of clothing, I kept my shoes and purse neutral.

I opted for a favorite pair of booties and a classic tote bag.

For my jewelry I chose red beaded tassel earrings.

As an avid pattern mixer, I love how the gingham shirt paired with the Modcloth plaid pencil skirt. It was the perfect way to end my 12 Days of Skirtmas. I hope you enjoyed it as much as I did. Happy holidays to you friends!

Skirtmas: Plaid Midi Skirt {Day 10}

Hello friend! It’s the tenth day of Skirtmas and so I give to thee a plaid midi skirt outfit. Now I know I’ve done many plaid outfits, including the Modcloth prim class hero on Skirtmas day 7. But what can I say, I love plaid, especially this time of year. So please indulge me a while longer while I showcase this pretty plaid skirt.

Tracy Reese Asymmetric Plaid Midi Skirt Review

The Tracy Reese asymmetric plaid midi skirt is made of a medium thick polyester blend that is dry clean only. As the name states, it has a beautiful asymmetric cut. It also has some fun details such as an unfinished hem at the bottom of the skirt and down the center seam. This helps to add texture and interest to the skirt.

The fit of the skirt is lovely. It drapes smoothly over the hips. I do think it runs a tad large though, so keep that in mind!

Because of the details of this skirt, particularly the raw hems, I wanted to pair it with a smooth and neutral top. Therefore I chose one of my new sweaters, the side slit button crew sweater from Target’s Who What Wear line. I love the buttons on the side. Details like that get me every time!

The gray color blended well with the skirt, allowing the blue in the plaid to pop.

I chose to wear red pumps with this look to add some more color. Since there is a light stripe of red in the skirt, I knew it would make a great accent color.

Using the same line of thinking, I chose another color in the plaid, mustard yellow, for my second accent color. If you recall my mustard yellow and red color crush post, I am already fond of this color combination. Therefore I confidently paired my mustard yellow purse with this plaid midi skirt outfit.

For earrings, I popped on a pair of beaded tassel earrings, also in red. I felt it balanced out the shoes. I then completed the look with my favorite gold layered necklace.

While I may be pushing it on the plaid skirts, I hope you recognize how singular and beautiful each one is. I sure do! Stay tuned for Skirtmas day 11!

Skirtmas: Modcloth Plaid Prim Class Hero Midi Skirt {Day 7}

Hello friend! For day 7 of Skirtmas, I decided to go classic Polished Whimsy and wear a pattern mixing outfit. In the fall, I am usually into wearing plaid, a lot of plaid! You may have noticed…When I saw the Modcloth plaid prim class hero midi skirt (why such a long name?), I wanted it right away. It reminded me of a green plaid skirt I wore a lot last year. Therefore, I knew I could do a lot with it.

Modcloth Plaid Prim Class Hero Midi Skirt Review

The Modcloth plaid prim class hero midi skirt is made of 100% medium-thick smooth cotton fabric that feels nice to the touch. It has a lining and lies nicely on the body. The skirt has a side zip as well as an elasticized waist at the back. When I first received it, the waist looked small and I was worried. But once I tried it on, it stretched to fit me comfortably. It falls just below the knee on my 5’4 frame, just where I like it!

Because I wear plaid so much, I like to pattern mix with it. {New to pattern mixing? Read my pattern mixing 101 post to get you started!} That way, I can get multiple unique outfits out of one item.

I was playing around with multiple other prints. At first I attempted another gingham and plaid look, but ultimately settled on polka dots instead. This particular polka dot shirt is especially festive in that the polka dots are gold!

For the shoes I decided to play off one of the colors in the skirt, mustard yellow. You all know how much I love mustard yellow!

12 Days of Skirtmas: Halogen Velvet Pleated Midi Skirt {Day 1}

Hello friend! And a very big welcome to the inaugural 12 Days of Skirtmas post! I am excited to start this holiday tradition on my blog. Starting today until Christmas Eve, I will be posting and styling a new skirt every day! You can follow along here, or on Instagram. Or better yet, play along and wear a skirt for the next 12 days! I further challenge you to wear your skirts a different way than you’ve worn them before! Today’s post features the beautiful Halogen velvet pleated midi skirt.

When I first saw this skirt, I was drawn to the velvet. I’ve worn a similar one before in gray (see winter florals post), but the black was calling me! Black velvet looks so rich and opulent. I knew it would make a perfect holiday skirt. Therefore I got one and quickly thought up some outfits.

Halogen Velvet Pleated Midi Skirt Goes Preppy

For my first pairing of the skirt, I wore it with my J Crew Stewart plaid button-down. I had worn a similar look last year for Christmas (with a black tulle skirt). Therefore this outfit was a natural one to re-create. I like how the velvet skirt elevates the plaid shirt to a more elegant style.

I chose to wear a yellow shoe to echo the color in the shirt and also to allow the skirt to pop.

Halogen Velvet Pleated Midi Skirt Goes Casual

For my second styling of the Halogen velvet pleated midi skirt, I decided to try a more casual look. I paired it with this bow tee to bring in a fun print. It also serves to show how fun and versatile this skirt can be.

I chose to wear silver pumps to mark for a holiday occasion. But you can also wear it with kicks and pull off a more casual and fun vibe.

Pattern Primer: Plaid Shirt Outfit

Hello friend! As you read in my 2017 Fall Fashion Trends, plaid is “in” for fall. While that comes as no surprise, I am nonetheless pleased to have the print around to wear all season. As discussed in that trends post, the type of plaid that is in style is more 70’s and retro style than 90’s grunge style. Therefore, pull that flannel off your waist, and get ready for a more lady-like plaid. Let me show you how I wear a plaid shirt outfit.

Plaid shirt outfit ideas on Polished Whimsy blog. How to wear for work and beyond.

To perfectly exemplify this trend, I will be featuring the Jenna Plaid Button Up Top from Shop Stevie. As soon as I saw the beautiful plaid on this shirt, I knew I wanted it for fall. I love the dropped shoulder and the pretty drape of the top. It sets it apart from the ubiquitous plaid button up we’ve seen everywhere else.

Plaid Shirt Outfit for the Weekend

What goes better with a plaid shirt than jeans? Nothing! I agree! Therefore, I paired my plaid shirt with my favorite fall jeans. I love the raw hem of this pair. It echoes the cool casualness of the top.

To accessorize this look, I added my Quay sunglasses. The gradient black lenses add another element of “cool” to the look.

Plaid shirt outfit for fall with black asymmetrical hem jeans and silver pumps Plaid shirt outfit for fall with black asymmetrical hem jeans and silver pumps

Choosing shoes for the casual plaid shirt outfit was a bit limiting. Because I want to show off the pretty diagonal hem of the jeans, I didn’t want a bulky bootie. I therefore went with some simple pumps. Because metallic tones are in style for fall, I chose my silver pumps. They also went well with the silver grommets on the purse.

Plaid Shirt Outfit for the Office

While wearing a plaid shirt outfit on days off is easy, wearing one for the office may be a tad more tricky. To make it work, make sure the rest of your outfit and accessories are classic and work appropriate. Therefore, to style the plaid top for work, I paired it with an ivory pencil skirt. The look is chic and polished.

I accessorized with gold hoops and my favorite new necklace: the Amber Y Chain Necklace.

I topped It all off with fantastic booties to bring together this professional plaid shirt outfit.

Whether it’s for work or play, a plaid shirt outfit will be a winner for fall. I hope you try one of these options and see how fun they can be!

2017 Fall Fashion Trends

Hello friend! With fall almost here, it’s time to start thinking about the 2017 fall fashion trends and deciding which ones we’ll participate in. I have looked through countless magazines and websites to pull together what I think will be the most interesting trends this season. But first, if you’re not quite ready for fall, check out my post on summer to fall transition.

As with every new season, I will rely on pieces already in my wardrobe, along with some updates from new purchases. Therefore I will be including photos from previous seasons. Please excuse the lower quality photos as some were taken before my blogging days!

2017 Fall Fashion Trends: Fun Trim

Whether it be feathers, fur or fringe, a fun trim is definitely on call for 2017 fall fashion trends. I definitely plan on getting aboard this trend. That’s because I have always had a fondness for feathers (at one time I even wanted a feather tattoo)! I think feather trim will be a more painless option! Until I find such skirt, I will wear my Banana Republic fringe skirt (I linked a few comparable ones below, you’re welcome!).

Fall 2017 fashion trends fringe
Add some fun this holiday season with a fringy skirt!

2017 Fall Fashion Trends: Shimmer and Shine

From patent leather to sequins, the 2017 fall fashion trends are calling for some high shine items! Polished metallics and glossy coated items were big too. Also essential this season: glitter! Whether in shoes or other items, a little sprinkle of glitter is on point. I will participate by wearing my silver pumps and perhaps adding a sequined skirt to my collection.

2017 Fall Fashion Trends: Florals

While not commonly a fall trend, florals are going to be big this fall! I can proudly say I was ahead of the curve with this one. I actually wore fall florals (and blogged about it) last year. Therefore I can easily participate in the trend again this year!

2017 Fall Fashion Trends: Red

Well this girl is certainly happy to see red as the color for fall. I’ve always loved red. Probably because as a teen I wanted to be “The lady in red” from that ubiquitous love song! Therefore, I will certainly be donning red this fall. While the runways showed a bunch of head to toe red outfits, you can certainly start with just a splash!

This may be the perfect season to bring back my red leather trench coat. It’s one of my “museum” pieces (more to come on that soon)! It’s such a statement piece that I had retired it for a few years. But with red being so big this fall, I may have to resurface that piece. You can try a bold red coat as well. Or why not try the “it” shoes in red? I’ve linked a few options for you below!

2017 Fall Fashion Trends: Retro Plaid

Plaid is certainly a common fall print, so I’m not surprised to see it here. According to some insiders, the difference this season is that the plaid is more retro (think 70s style: with browns and oranges). Because I have always loved plaid, I am eager to try this trend as well. I plan on finding (within my closet and at the stores) some of the more classic plaid.

2017 Fall Fashion Trends: Corduroy

Another one of the 2017 fall fashion trends that I am not surprised about is corduroy. Similar to plaid, corduroy seems to come around every fall. This is another trend I can easily follow. I already own a beautiful mustard yellow corduroy skirt from Anthropologie. I have worn it multiple times in the past and I am sure to wear it again this fall.

Mint and mustard outfit with anthropologie corduroy skirt demonstrating 2017 fall fashion trends

I’m also eyeing this gorgeous corduroy top. I think it will be just the item to add to my 2017 fall fashion trends list.

I have to admit that the 2017 fall fashion trends has got me excited for the cooler weather ahead. Which one of these trends are your favorites so far? And just in case you thought that’s all I had to offer, you’re wrong! Stay tuned for part II of my 2017 fall fashion trends. There are more exciting things to come!

Color Crush: Light Blue and Red

Hello friend! With spring in full force, I am happy to start playing with new color palettes. One of my new favorites is light blue and red outfits. The original inspiration for this color palette was from a painting. Because the colors looked so pretty together, I vowed to make it into an outfit. So I hope to do the color combination justice!

Light Blue and Red Outfits: Floral

The simplest way to start to wear these colors is to find an item of clothing that already incorporates the two colors. Therefore when I saw this dress, I knew I had to have it. The result is a pretty mix of beautiful bright and soft colors. To further highlight the color combination, try adding light blue and red accessories.

Light Blue and Red Outfits: Preppy

A fun outfit for work is this combination with a light blue and red plaid shirt. I paired it with a light blue pencil skirt to make it polished for work.

Because I am always looking for an opportunity to pattern mix, I chose to wear my floral print shoes here. For the rest of my accessories, I chose to carry a navy purse to echo the navy in the shoes. And as for my jewelry, I decided to just wear one bold piece: my Zosma earrings.

Light Blue and Red Outfits: Color Block

For the daring color lovers out there, I challenge you to wear the colors boldly in a light blue and red color block! Here I chose a light blue blouse and red pleated skirt.

Once again, I chose my floral print shoes. I then added my navy clutch to contrast the blue of the top and coordinate with the shoes.

Light Blue and Red Outfits: It’s In The Bag

Sometimes a fantastic color combination can be found in one small accessory. Case in point is this pretty floral clutch. It has baby blue and red together in one item. Therefore you can wear a neutral item and just grab this baby to add the color to your outfit!

I hope you enjoyed the light blue and red outfits. Below is a selection of items you can purchase to make your own versions of my light blue and red outfits. Let me know which one you’re planning on trying!

Skirt Code: Why I Prefer to Wear Skirts, Reason 3

Hello friend! If you’ve been following me for some time now, you know that I adore wearing skirts. While my penchant to wear skirts came around slowly, it is a style I have fully embraced. First, if you need to catch up, read my previous skirt code posts. The third reason that I opt to wear skirts is that it allows for me to have fun with tights. Pairing a skirt and tights is a simple way to increase the wear of your skirts.

Pattern mixing fashion blogger polished whimsy demonstrates why she likes to wear a skirt and tights by wearing polka dot tights with plaid shoes.

Because we have a relatively mild winter in Southern California, I can still comfortably wear skirts in the winter. That allows for me to use tights as a fun accessory. Choosing a skirt and tights over a pair of pants has many more possibilities for a fun outfit. Whether I choose a great color or a fun pattern, tights can bring an added element to the outfit.

Pattern mixing fashion blogger polished whimsy demonstrates why she likes to wear a skirt and tights by wearing polka dot tights with plaid shoes.

For this outfit, I specifically decided to wear solid colors in my shirt and skirt so that the tights and shoes stood out. This is to demonstrate my point that even with a simple outfit, patterned tights and shoes can bring in so much character.

Pattern mixing fashion blogger polished whimsy demonstrates why she likes to wear a skirt and tights by wearing polka dot tights with plaid shoes.Pattern mixing fashion blogger polished whimsy demonstrates why she likes to wear a skirt and tights by wearing polka dot tights with plaid shoes.

Now of course, you can be more creative and mix prints in your skirts and tights, or even include your shoes. You know I am always up for a good triple pattern mix. And this is my exact point, wearing a skirt allows you to have the opportunity to wear two patterns on your bottom half. Whereas if you were wearing pants, you would only have one item and thus one pattern! I rest my case!

Since there is so much focus on the tights and shoes, I kept the rest of my accessories minimal. I added another pop of color with my gold purse. As for my wrists I threw on a fun arm party for one and let the other one go bare. Lastly for my earrings, I chose a bold pair, the Zosma drops from Baublebar.

Pattern mixing fashion blogger polished whimsy demonstrates why she likes to wear a skirt and tights by wearing polka dot tights with plaid shoes. Pattern mixing fashion blogger polished whimsy demonstrates why she likes to wear a skirt and tights by wearing polka dot tights with plaid shoes.

Because I love my arm party so much, here is a close up of it. I am wearing my Daniel Wellington Dapper watch (you can use code “POLISHEDWHIMSY” for 15% off of any watches). I am also wearing my Trellis Lane Aria and Olivia bracelets (you can use code “POLISHED25” for 25% off all jewelry).

Pattern mixing fashion blogger polished whimsy demonstrates why she likes to wear a skirt and tights by wearing polka dot tights with plaid shoes.

In conclusion, it really is fun to have another item of clothing to mix up colors and patterns. Wearing skirts and tights is an easy way of getting that opportunity. Hence the third reason that I prefer to wear skirts over pants! How do you feel about wearing a skirt and tights? Which one are you more interested in adding in a pair of tights: a pattern or color?

Try This: Plaid and Lace

Hello friend! As you know from reading my blog, I enjoy pairing unexpected pieces together (read more about it in my lace skirt and sweatshirt post). Because I have recently been pulling out my white items of clothing from storage (discussed in my winter transition post), I came upon that same lace skirt. I knew I wanted to wear it in a unique way, so I tried a plaid and lace outfit.

polished whimsy in plaid and lace outfit

Plaid and White Lace

The outfit came out better than I anticipated. There is just something inherently beautiful about pairing unexpected pieces together. I especially like to pair “soft” with “tough” which is how I came up with my camo and lace post. The same concept works here. A “tough” or masculine plaid shirt is paired with a “soft” or feminine lace skirt.

polished whimsy in plaid and lace outfit polished whimsy in plaid and lace outfit

An added bonus of wearing this skirt in the winter is the ability to stretch out my summer wardrobe. Although this skirt, with its feminine eyelet and scallop detail, is more of a summer skirt, paired with the flannel, it can pass in the winter.

polished whimsy in plaid and lace outfit

Even though the outfit itself is such a standout, I still couldn’t resist adding another pattern in. Therefore, I wore a leopard print shoe. Then I just pulled it all together with a black shoulder bag. Lastly, for jewelry, I added one of my favorite earrings and some fun rings.

polished whimsy in plaid and lace outfit and baublebar earrings

Plaid and Black Lace

Because the above outfit worked out so well, I set out to try it with another lace skirt. I chose a pretty black and taupe lace skirt. This time, I chose a plaid top with many neutral tones in it. The outfit also turned out great.

Polished whimsy in plaid and lace outfitpolished whimsy in plaid and lace outfit

For the accessories here, I chose not to pattern mix (it does happen once in a while)! Instead I opted for accessories with some fun details and textures. Therefore I chose a pair of booties with fringe and a fun textured clutch.

polished whimsy in plaid and lace outfit polished whimsy in plaid and lace All in all, I think both of these outfits turned out great. Furthermore, it gives you more options on mixing your clothing items together. I hope you try a plaid and lace outfit for yourself! Winter Wardrobe Transition

Hello friend! Winter is finally here. Now we don’t have too cold a winter in Los Angeles, but I still like to adjust my clothes for the new season. Let me show you my process for updating my closet and transitioning into my winter wardrobe.

For my seasonal color palettes, I like to take cues from nature and the occasions of that season. For example, during fall transition, I like to wear warmer colors such as browns and oranges. Then, during December, I center my outfits around holiday colors. For that month, I wore a lot of red, green and gold. Now that we are in Winter, I lean towards a few staple color schemes.

First, I add white back into my wardrobe (stay tuned for winter white posts). During the fall months, I did not wear much white (besides small accent pieces). But now that it is winter, I can add it back in. Because winter is often associated with snow, white makes for a quintessential winter color.

In addition to the white, I adjust the rest of my colors away from the warm shades of fall and towards the cooler and icier tones of winter. For example, I will wear more blues and grays.

Try New Combinations

Winter is the perfect season to experiment with layers! I enjoy layering cool weather clothes such as scarves, vests and sweaters over other pieces in my wardrobe. This makes for fun and new combinations to wear. The key to making this type of look “work” is to choose a unifying color scheme.

For example, pick items that have similar tones so they look like they “go” together even if they are from different seasons. As you can see in the example below, I have paired a spring/summer pleated skirt with a thick turtleneck sweater. Even though the items look like they are from different seasons, the outfit works because the colors are unified. In this example, it is the color gray that brings it all together.

Retire Some Pieces

Finally, I urge you to retire some items of clothing. Whether it’s a permanent retirement to a charity or a temporary retirement to storage, you will see results. Your winter wardrobe will be neater and more accessible.

No matter what, there will be some items you just won’t wear year round (for me that is rompers, shorts and sandals). Instead of letting them occupy valuable space in your closet, pack them away for the season. This accomplishes a working closet (in that everything in it can be worn at that time). It also gives you something to look forward to next season, where you get to bring out those stored pieces. It’s like free shopping!

These three simple updates keep me interested in my wardrobe and help me look fresh each season. Do you have any other tips? Please let me know in the comments!
