Hello friend! I hope you are having a great 2018 so far. I’ve been busy at home decorating my bedroom (I’ll share some photos when I’m done). I’m also leisurely putting together some winter outfits for when I go back to work (currently on a stay-cation, yay!). One of my favorite winter looks is a sweater dress and booties outfit. So let me share my current one with you.
Hello friend! With some cooler weather upon us, I have been playing with layers. One of the newest layering pieces I found is a winter kimono or ruana. What makes them “winter” is that they are made out of thicker fabrics than their summery counterparts. I have been wearing my winter ruana, the Anthropologie Mixed Stripes Kimono, non-stop. Let me show you how I am styling it.
Ruana vs. Kimono vs. Poncho vs. Cape
First and foremost, let’s get some definitions out of the way. Because if you are a stickler for definitions like I am, you are confused and frustrated with these words being used interchangeably. That’s because they are not in fact interchangeable. Each one of those items is a different type of clothing. So let’s get the definitions down before we go any further.
Poncho: I’ll start with a poncho as I think it is the one we are most familiar with. A poncho is an outerwear garment that is essentially a large piece of fabric (either square or rectangular) with a hole in it. To wear it, one simply slips it over the head. It has no sleeves or other openings.
Cape: A cape is similar to a poncho but it has an opening down the front which is usually sealed with a button closure. A cape also has slits for the arms to come through but no formed sleeves.
Kimono: A kimono is a long, open front cardigan with true sleeves. The sleeves are usually lose, as is the overall fit.
Ruana: A ruana is a cross between a poncho and a kimono. It has an opening down the front like a kimono. However, it does not have full sleeves like a kimono does. It may just have a stich or button to give the appearance of sleeves.
If you’ve understood the definitions of a kimono and ruana, you will note that the mixed stripes kimono is actually a ruana! Gasp! It’s been named wrong! I will refrain from calling the fashion police on this grave error because whatever the name of this item, I simply adore it. I love the thick and nubby texture. It is so cozy and comforting on chilly days. But I especially love the bold stripes. It makes for a striking outfit every time!
Mixed Stripes Kimono for Play
The first time I wore the ruana was for my weekend getaway trip to San Francisco. With the weather there being cooler than in Los Angeles, I wanted a chic outer layer. The mixed stripes kimono was just the right item. I paired it with a black sweater and jeans. The result was exactly what I was looking for: chic, comfortable, and warm.
To add another layer of warmth I wore my favorite quilted over the knee boots (get this year’s version on sale here) and of course cozy socks underneath.
I then finished the look with my favorite necklace of the moment, the Brielle Statement Necklace. To top it all off I threw on a pair of sunnies. I thought the High Key in black fade added just the right amount of cool to the outfit.
Mixed Stripes Kimono for Day
To change up the look for day, I decided to wear the mixed stripes kimono with a skirt. I chose a pencil skirt because I feel they look best with longer cardigans. You can read more about what I pair with long cardigans in my duster cardigans post and cardigan sweater outfits post. For this particular look, I decided to be a little risque and pair the ruana with a leather pencil skirt.
To keep it appropriate for day, I chose a light turtleneck for my top. However because I was ready to have some fun with patterns, I chose a striped turtleneck. I was excited to see how the two stripes paired together. I love a double stripe look, (remember this post?) Therefore I was looking forward to the result. Luckily, it did not disappoint. The stripes worked perfectly together. Check out my pattern mixing 101 post to learn more about that!
For accessories I opted for a sharp looking high heeled bootie. With the length of the skirt and the ruana, I wanted to create some height for myself. As for the necklace, I chose the Brielle pendant. Because I wore these outfits on different days, I hadn’t noticed I had worn different versions of the same necklace. What can I say, I like filigree!
In conclusion, whether we are calling it a kimono or a ruana, the mixed stripes kimono is going to be a major player in my wardrobe this season. I love how versatile it is. How would you wear it?
Hello friend! As you already know, I work a day job as a pharmacist. Besides working as one, I also immensely enjoy teaching others what I know. Therefore I sometimes give lectures at the hospital and local universities. In fact, I gave one recently and wanted to share my advice on what to wear to give a lecture. It may surprise you but my lecture outfit was also a bodysuit outfit! Let me tell you why it works!
Features of a Successful Lecture Outfit
Choose a streamlined top that won’t get untucked or bunched up. Now you see why a bodysuit outfit is a good lecture outfit! The top stays in place no matter how much you move around.
Black colored top is ideal if you tend to sweat. The perspiration is less likely to show on a black top.
Pick bottoms that are fitted but not too tight. Of course I go with a skirt, because I love skirts (see my skirt code series for more on that subject). But pants will work equally well.
Comfortable shoes are key. Whether you wear flats or heels, make sure they are a pair that you have already broken in.
Hair styled away from the face. If you tend to fidget with your hair or it covers up half your face, it’s probably best to style it off your face for the lecture. It just ends up looking more professional and put together.
Opt for neutral makeup. Once I made the mistake of wearing a gorgeous coral lipstick. One student came up after the lecture to “compliment” me on the lip color. While I knew she was being nice, I realized that I’d rather have the students focus on the content of my lecture than my lipstick color. Thus from now on, I stick to neutral makeup.
My 2017 Lecture Outfit
For my most recent lecture outfit, I chose to wear a neutral printed pencil skirt with a sleeveless bodysuit. Sticking with my rules above, I chose a black bodysuit. As bodysuits go, I recommend this one as it is thin, comfortable and super flattering. Because I wore a bodysuit outfit, I didn’t have to worry about my shirt twisting around or looking disheveled. It stayed in place the entire time.
I chose a printed skirt to add some visual interest. Note, however, that I chose the print in a neutral color. I didn’t want too much going on so I wouldn’t distract my learners.
For my shoes I chose my Clark’s wedges. They are comfortable and professional at the same time. Win win! I also chose black for my purse. While I am not usually a matchy matchy girl, I opt for matching for a lecture outfit. It’s easy and classic.
As for jewelry, I chose a fun Baublebar pendant necklace and hoop earrings. I felt that the mock turtleneck looks very elegant with a pendant necklace. I rounded off the look with a watch and a ring.
As promised above, I kept my makeup neutral with tones of brown on my eyelids and mauve on my lips.
I hope the next time you have to give a presentation, you’ll remember these tips! If you have any other suggestions, let me know! Also check out exact or similar pieces below!
Hello friend! I’m happy to finally welcome fall to Southern California (check out my fall transition and fall trends posts for my thoughts on the season). With the cooler weather comes the opportunity to wear layers. And there are no layers I like more than a duster cardigan outfit. Let me show you two ways to style a duster cardigan.
Duster Cardigan Outfit Tips
Wear streamlined clothes underneath to not look wide or voluminous. Examples include pencil skirts, fitted teas and dresses, skinny jeans and leggings.
If wearing a skirt or dress, choose one with a hemline that is significantly shorter than the duster. A good rule of thumb is a minimum of four inches. This allows the duster to be the focus.
Choose thinner fabrics for the clothing underneath the cardigan. Items that are very bulky throw off the look of the duster.
Casual Duster Cardigan Outfit
For a casual duster cardigan outfit, I initially thought of pairing the cardi with jeans. But due to the warm weather we were still having that day, I opted for a denim skirt. I love how the combination worked out. However if you prefer jeans, go for it. The result will be just as good!
This J Jill duster cardigan is just lovely for fall. The texture created by the multi-colored yarn is perfect for fall, making it easy to pair with many other pieces. I also like that it has a collar. It adds a nice frame to the neck making it fun to pair with a necklace or turtleneck, like I have done here.
And can we discuss the presence of the pockets?! We all know pockets make the outfit better.
To style my duster cardigan for work, I paired a J. Jill black duster with a striped dress. The addition of the pattern broke up the solid mass of the cardigan. It also helps to show off the shape and style of the duster.
What’s a bonus about this particular duster? It is reversible! I’m sure you’ll see another duster cardigan outfit using the reverse of this one!
In choosing the shoes for this outfit, I went with brown, my brown Vionic Rory boots to be exact. Black just seemed too expected and boring. It’s funny when I was younger I thought it was a major fashion sin to wear brown shoes with a black outfit. And look at me now, encouraging others to do it. Ahh how we change!
But back to the Rory. These little booties are a perfect fall shoe. The color is a beautiful medium brown. Furthermore, the cutouts and buckle add some spunk. This little guy is more than your average bootie!
For accessories, I felt that the look cried out for a pendant necklace. I added some simple hoop earrings and it was a success!
I hoped you enjoyed my duster cardigan outfit post. I’d love to know what other ways you are wearing your dusters. Let me know in the comments!
Hello friend! With fall here, I am starting to transition my closet. To better understand how I do so, read my fall transition post. As discussed in that post, because I live in Los Angeles, we stay warm for a bit longer than other parts of the world. Therefore, I thought that the J Crew colorblock eyelet peplum sweater would be the ideal transition piece.
J Crew Colorblock Eyelet Peplum Sweater: Review
I initially purchased this sweater on a whim during a late night online purchase (if you watch my insta stories, you know I am a midnight shopper!). When I received the J Crew colorblock eyelet peplum sweater I knew it would be a good transition piece. The pretty eyelet is reminiscent of summer, while the sweater back gives a nod to fall.
The fit of the J Crew colorblock eyelet peplum sweater is true to size. I purchased my usual XS. The peplum starts at a good spot, not too high and not too low. It also ends at a descent length (right at my hip bone). Thus it can be worn comfortably with any type of rise on the bottoms without risking showing off any unintended patches of skin.
As I had imagined during my midnight shopping spree, the J Crew colorblock eyelet peplum sweater is quite easy to style. I started with a casual summer look. Thus, I had to pair it with my denim shorts. They needed one last hurrah! It turned into a very cute and casual styling.
To prove that the J Crew colorblock eyelet peplum sweater is versatile enough to stay in my wardrobe, I decided to style it for a work outfit. I easily paired it with a pencil skirt. I think a peplum top always goes well with a pencil skirt. It is just a lovely feminine look.
Of course I had to add some print into the mix. At first I was a tad nervous to do so. I wasn’t sure if it would be too much with the multiple textures in the J Crew colorblock eyelet peplum sweater. But because the colors of the print were neutral, the leopard print skirt paired well with the top.
For shoes I went with classic nude pumps. I also added my fall sunglasses. I had been looking for a brown pair of sunglasses that weren’t boring. These ones with their metallic finish are just what I wanted.
I was concerned about accessorizing with the J Crew colorblock eyelet peplum sweater. Because of the textures in the top and the ribbing at the collar, I didn’t want to add a necklace that would overshadow the top. I therefore went with a dainty yet statement making pendant necklace.
After these initial pairings of the J Crew colorblock eyelet peplum sweater, I am quite happy with my purchase. It will be a good item to wear during fall transition and beyond! How would you style the J Crew colorblock eyelet peplum sweater?
Hello friend! Today’s post came about quite naturally. First, I have been meaning to do a denim on denim look for a while now. Second, I keep seeing such pretty distressed denim skirts everywhere. Therefore I decided to combine the two and do a denim on denim skirt look for you guys.
I have done a few denim on denim looks before: Some on Instagram and also one on the blog (see weekend in NYC blog post). But none of those looks were with a skirt. Therefore I challenged myself to try to style a denim on denim skirt outfit.
My Tips for a Denim on Denim Look
If both denim items are blue, make sure there is a good amount of contrast in the shades.
In choosing the top, I knew I wanted a chambray. Truthfully, because I love chambray so much, the biggest challenge was choosing my favorite one! In the end, this knotted tank won out. I liked that it had a high neckline which would balance out the short skirt in this denim on denim outfit.
Tip to make a denim on denim look work with this top? Choose straight cut bottoms, whether it’s a skirt or pants. Because of the knot at the hem of the shirt, a pair of pants or skirt with a lot of volume on top can detract from the details of the top. It can also add too much bulk to your midsection, so stick to a straight cut item!
For the skirt of my denim on denim outfit I could have gone with a deeper blue, but this black denim skirt had caught my eye. I love the raw hem and the high-low cut. Both features made it very unique to me. Therefore I decided to go with it. Size note: I sized up a couple of sizes to get a longer length.
How to Accessorize a Denim on Denim Outfit
So what shoes should you pair with a denim on denim outfit? If you’re a pattern lover like me, you’d most definitely pick one with a print. Therefore I chose my new snakeskin Blakely Booties from Vionic shoes. They add interest and dimension to the outfit. Furthermore, these shoes are amazing. I am thoroughly impressed with how comfortable and stylish they are.
For my jewerly, I wore my perfect hoops from Sheila Fajl. Because the neckline of the top was high cut, I decided a large pendant necklace would be perfect. Therefore I added my Sugarfix warrior pendant. I completed the look with a silver watch and bracelet.
I hope you enjoyed my take on a denim on denim look! Because the pieces are so versatile, I plan on wearing them multiple different ways all summer! If you have outfit suggestions, leave them in the comments!
Hello friend! With fourth of July here, we need some fun and colorful outfits. Because I like to dress for a theme, I’m excited to bring on the red, white and blue. Let me give you multiple fourth of July outfit ideas.
Casual Fourth of July Outfit
For a casual yet polished look, why not pair a red striped off the shoulder top with some denim shorts?
It makes for a simple outfit to wear to a barbecue and to watch fireworks.
I chose to wear my favorite pair of summer booties. These are my favorites because of the fantastic details. I adore that it has a deep slit on each side. I also love that it is perforated and open toe. They add a nice touch to every outfit I wear. You can also see the booties and shorts styled another way in my cactus print top post.
Accessories can also make a fun statement for a fourth of July outfit. I chose to add another punch of blue with my earrings.
Subtle Fourth of July Outfit
If you prefer to be less obvious in your outfit themes, try a simple chambray dress and add some red and white accessories. Because chambray is such a ubiquitous fabric, it doesn’t scream “Fourth of July outfit,” but it does whisper it! Therefore you can feel like you are participating in the theme without being too obvious.
This dress is my favorite chambray dress at the moment. It is so easy to simply throw on and go! But once I pair it with the fun red white and blue clutch, it makes for a fabulous fourth of July outfit!
I chose to wear neutral shoes so not to distract from the fun colors of the outfit. The gladiator sandals added some personality without competing to be the center of attention.
A Hint of Fourth of July Outfit
When all else fails or you just don’t have the time to plan, you can make a fourth of July outfit easily with a chambray top (or any blue top) and a red and white striped clutch. This look is similar to the one above, but even simpler.
Dressy Fourth of July Outfit
I wanted to include a dressier fourth of July outfit option in case some of us have a tad more formal event to attend. I still kept with the color theme of red white and blue. However, I chose more upscale pieces of clothing. For example I chose a red pleated skirt and a flirty cold shoulder top.
To make it even more formal, you can pair the outfit with some high heeled sandals. But I chose to keep with the booties for an in-between look.
Because the neckline of the dress is so open, I decided to wear a bold necklace. I chose the Isadora bib from Baublebar because it complemented the color palette so well.
Overall I love the flirty and feminine feel of this fourth of July outfit. It’s definitely my favorite of the three.
I’d love to know what fourth of July outfit you are planning on wearing this year! Let me know in the comments!
Hello friend! While I enjoy putting together fun work appropriate outfits, I also like to try new styles. One trend I’ve been playing with is the bohemian look. Although I can’t get too “boho” at work, I can bring in a boho vibe. The easiest way to do so is by wearing a boho white dress. My dress is from Shop Stevie. It is now sold out, but they have other fantastic bohemian style dresses.
My Take on the Boho White Dress
When I first got this dress, I knew it would be a perfect spring and summer look. Therefore I chose to pair it with my summer booties. I feel that boho is almost synonymous with booties! I love the way it came out. The booties temper the femininity of the dress.
I chose not to wear a necklace because the top of this little boho white dress is so pretty. It has delicate embroidery on the bodice and sleeves. Thus I didn’t want anything to cover it up.
Therefore, I only wore earrings and some bracelets.
Because the outfit was lacking in color and pattern, I chose to bring in a “polished whimsy” element with my choice of purse. Therefore I wore my snow leopard print clutch. I love how the snow leopard is softer than the original leopard spots. It works perfectly with the boho white dress.
All in all, I think this boho white dress outfit came together fairly well. I’m excited about styling it a few different ways, similar to what I did with this dress. Specifically, here are my recommendations (for this or another boho white dress):
Other Ways to Wear a Boho White Dress
Belt with a cool multi-strand or fringe belt.
Pair with wedges and a floppy hat.
Layer with a crochet vest, oh so boho!
Add a casual element with a denim jacket.
Top it with a rich suede jacket.
Accessorize with fringy jewelry and layer it on! Think lots of beaded bracelets and multiple strands of necklaces.
Carry a large unstructured bag, preferably with fringe!
If you already love the boho look, be sure to check out my friend Mandy’s post (boho chic with 4 easy pieces) where she has great ways of achieving it. I’ve also gathered up some pretty boho pieces from this post and beyond below.
Hello friend! During my spring wardrobe transition, I put away a lot of my winter items. However, there were a few things I kept. Specifically, my leather jackets. Although they are inherently a cool weather item, I think leather jackets can also be a perfect transition piece. Let me show you how to update your look with a spring leather jacket.
How to Make Your Jacket Spring Ready:
Wear your leather jacket with lighter pieces. With the chill of winter behind us, we can forego the sweaters and scarves. Instead, we can now pair our leather jackets with airy and feminine fabrics. So go ahead and throw it on over your pretty eyelet blouse or frilly off the shoulder top. The juxtaposition will be lovely, trust me!
Along the lines of the above reason, also pair your jacket with shorter hems. Shorter hemlines, be it skirts or shorts, will automatically push the outfit into a warm weather look.
Change out your jacket for a spring color. If you are on the market for a new jacket, consider a pretty color for your spring leather jacket! I’ve seen some gorgeous ones in pinks, blues and lavender!
Preppy Cool Spring Leather Jacket
In case you thought the spring leather jacket was only for the weekend, I made sure to style a work appropriate look.
Therefore for my first outfit, I chose to pair this blush pink spring leather jacket with a seersucker striped pencil skirt, this year’s version here. The outfit is perfectly ready for work, but with a punch of personality.
For a more colorful outfit with a spring leather jacket, try what I’ve done here. This time I went bold, opting to repeat a favorite color combination: light blue and red. Hey, if it ain’t broke, why fix it, right?
The light blue leather jacket is a quick way to update your wardrobe. It not only adds color, but also adds a different texture and even some attitude to the outfit. The outfit without the jacket is a sweet look with a tee and pleated skirt. But add the jacket and you’ve got a lot more going on. The leather and styling of the jacket brings a “toughness” and “coolness” to the look, both of which I can use once in a while!
Of course I had to stay true to myself and bring in some pattern mixing. Therefore I opted to wear the pieces with a striped tee and my favorite floral heels.
And finally for accessories, I chose to add a fun pair of earrings and a few statement rings. Pops of red on the lips and tips completes this fun and colorful spring leather outfit!
With the two foolproof examples I’ve shown here, you too should try a spring leather jacket! Let me know how you plan to wear yours!
Hello friend! Hot off the heels of my spring trends post, I’d like to feature my favorite new trend: the graphic tee. Now I’ve worn graphic tees many times before, but I recently got a new tee from Mama Bird & Co. Because I wanted fresh ways to style it, I came up with these three new looks. Therefore I had to share them with you.
What’s even more special about this post is that the core elements of this look are all the same. I have incorporated leather, the tee and leopard print. However, each look has these elements mixed up to give you multiple options to wear it. I like to do this to show you how to make inspirations work for you. Instead of feeling the need to purchase every piece of a look, mix up the elements with what you’ve got and make it your own!
Pleated and Graphic
For this first look, I paired the tee with a pleated leather skirt, heels and a tweed jacket. This results in a fun, work appropriate look (if your tee doesn’t have a four letter word that is!).
For my jewelry, I kept the neckline bare so the graphic tee was the focus. I therefore just wore a pretty pair of jeweled studs.
Casual Graphic Tee and Leggings
For I cool mom-on-the-go look, I paired the tee with leather leggings (from Gray Monroe) and a leopard print cardigan. While the elements of the look are basically the same, switching them around results in a significantly different outfit. To further highlight the casual look, I wore a fun pair of flat booties.
Graphic Tee Out on the Town
Who says tee shirts just have to be for daytime? I say dress them up and take them out on the town! Therefore for my final look, I am doing just that!
This time I am wearing a pencil cut leather skirt. I also changed the leopard print item to a bold and glamorous fur coat. Add a pair of fierce heels and statement earrings, and you’re ready for the night!
In conclusion, a graphic tee can truly be worn almost anywhere! I hope you try one this season. Let me know your favorite look and stay tuned to Instagram for a fun giveaway! If you’re still on the hunt for the perfect graphic tee, check out Mama Bird & Co for many fun options.
