Try This: Graphic Tee

Hello friend! Hot off the heels of my spring trends post, I’d like to feature my favorite new trend: the graphic tee. Now I’ve worn graphic tees many times before, but I recently got a new tee from Mama Bird & Co. Because I wanted fresh ways to style it, I came up with these three new looks. Therefore I had to share them with you.

Fashion blogger polished whimsy styles a graphic tee three ways with elements of leather and leopard print

What’s even more special about this post is that the core elements of this look are all the same. I have incorporated leather, the tee and leopard print. However, each look has these elements mixed up to give you multiple options to wear it. I like to do this to show you how to make inspirations work for you. Instead of feeling the need to purchase every piece of a look, mix up the elements with what you’ve got and make it your own!

Pleated and Graphic

For this first look, I paired the tee with a pleated leather skirt, heels and a tweed jacket. This results in a fun, work appropriate look (if your tee doesn’t have a four letter word that is!).

For my jewelry, I kept the neckline bare so the graphic tee was the focus. I therefore just wore a pretty pair of jeweled studs.

Casual Graphic Tee and Leggings

For I cool mom-on-the-go look, I paired the tee with leather leggings (from Gray Monroe) and a leopard print cardigan. While the elements of the look are basically the same, switching them around results in a significantly different outfit. To further highlight the casual look, I wore a fun pair of flat booties.

Graphic Tee Out on the Town

Who says tee shirts just have to be for daytime? I say dress them up and take them out on the town! Therefore for my final look, I am doing just that!

This time I am wearing a pencil cut leather skirt. I also changed the leopard print item to a bold and glamorous fur coat. Add a pair of fierce heels and statement earrings, and you’re ready for the night!

Lord & Taylor Friends and Family Sale

Hello friends!

Every year around this time, the boxes arriving at my door do not seem to cease. That’s because there are so many good sales going on. One of the ones I look forward to yearly is the Lord and Taylor friends and family sale. That is because, this sale is phenomenal: most items are up to 25% off! Consequently, the thought of such a good sale can make us giddy, almost to the point of impractical. For that reason, I try to plan ahead. That way, I 0nly purchase what I truly need, both for the season as well as to stock up.

I initially aim at purchasing my essentials that do not otherwise go on sale. The biggest example of this is my favorite bra. Because it is a luxury brand, it usually does not get marked down, except in the case of a color discontinuation. For that reason, I always stock up during the sale.

Besides bras, my other favorite essential to purchase are pumps. My favorites are the Kate Spade Licorice. Similar to the bra, the basic colors never go on sale. Therefore this is my opportunity to purchase those colors at a discounted price. Last year, I purchased a black and nude pair, both of which I’ve worn numerous times already.

Once I have my essentials restocked, I allow myself to purchase some fun in-season items. I’ve been eyeing this bomber jacket, this moto jacket, and this block heel ankle strap shoe.

I have listed my top picks below, but the options are endless. Therefore, take your time and thoroughly shop the Lord and Taylor friends and family sale. Make sure to pick out some essentials as well as some fun items to add to your closet.

Do Accessories Make the Outfit?

Hi friend!

Have you heard the phrase, “the accessories make the outfit?” Do you find that to be true? I believe it can be true, especially when it comes to a neutral outfit. Let me show you how I amp up my accessories to add more interest to an outfit.

The outfit in question is this one I wore recently for dinner and drinks in New York City.

To make the simplest of pairings, one would add black shoes and bag. It is a no-brainer: there is black in the skirt and the top is black! And truly, there is nothing wrong with the look. It is classic, elegant and timeless.

But you know me and my love for colors and patterns. While I like to pack neutral clothing and accessories for travel (see travel series), black shoes and bag was just too matchy-matchy for me. I had to mix it up, but I still wanted to keep it neutral. Well, I remembered what my friend @queserasarah says: leopard is a neutral. I grabbed my Kate Spade leopard heels and off I went.

The outfit was perfect for travel, neutral but still fun. Can’t you tell from the smile on my face?

And while the outfit was perfect for travel, I wanted a way to spice it up more while at home. So I had to add a pop of color. I chose to move the leopard print to the bag and swap out the shoes for red ones! Now that’s what I call a wow look. While being neutral and sophisticated, it is also unique and playful. I plan to wear this to Los Angeles Fashion Week.

Which one of the three looks is your favorite? Would you agree that accessories make the outfit or do you not see much of a difference in between the looks?

End of Season Blues

Hello friend!

It’s starting to happen. One season is ending and another is starting. And it’s making me a little sad. Do you experience end of season blues? I do. Perhaps I can describe it better as an anxiety. I stress that I didn’t get to wear all of my favorite pieces for that season. I hustle trying to get “one more wear” in before the season truly changes. Am I alone here?

This anxiety is most acute when we transition from summer to fall. I am a summer girl. I like the long hours of sunlight. The shorter days ahead truly make me sad. I may have some seasonal affective disorder, but I’ll leave that discussion for the shrink’s couch.

So how do I deal with this? I have a few solutions:

Wear season’s favorites

While it’s still within the season and the weather permits, go ahead and wear your favorites! Living in Los Angeles, I can comfortably wear many of my summer pieces well into October. Now of course, I try to mix them in with more traditional autumnal pieces and colors, but I still get to wear them!

This skirt from J. Crew is one of my favorite summer purchases. But I feel like I can wear it into the fall. Here I have it paired with camo and blush pink. Come fall, I envision it with a sweater or sweatshirt. I have big plans for it. Make sure to check out my upcoming fall transition posts to see how this turns out.

Plan for incoming season

Even if it’s not your favorite season, each one brings in it’s own unique attributes and fashion wears. Look through your clothes and get excited about wearing those items again. Also, plan for what cute new things you can add to your closet.

Clothing wise, I can once again wear my blanket scarves. I haven’t seen them in months. It will be fun to unbox them from their storage bins and see how they pair with some of my newer pieces.

In addition to clothes, seasonal transition for me includes makeup. I enjoy wearing seasonal colors on my lips and nails. Therefore, with each new season, I can change up my makeup look. In the fall, this will include pretty plums, brick reds, and some vampy burgundies. Saving these colors for the season gives me something to look forward to.

Plan one last hurrah

Because I love warm weather travel so much, I will often take a small end of summer trip to truly basque in as much sun as I can. It doesn’t have to be anyplace fancy, just one more weekend of warm weather fun.

Identify reason for anxiety/sadness

This may be crossing over to psychological area, but it’s important to recognize why we have end of season blues. After that recognition, find a solution to give you peace. For me, as I stated above, it’s a fear that I didn’t get to wear my favorite pieces. I remedy that by weeding through my items and getting rid of unused and unloved pieces (I resell items in good condition on my Instagram closet page @bloggerfriendscloset. This will leave only my favorites ready for next year!

I also remind myself, that this season will come again. It’s not my last summer (so I hope!) I will have the chance to wear these pieces again. There is no need to be anxious about it!

Plan fun activities for the season ahead

Even if it’s not my favorite season, I plan activities that I will enjoy. It gives me things to look forward to. For fall, that will include a pumpkin patch visit, some seasonal baking and a trip to wine country.

Do you get end of season blues? If you do I hope they are not severe. I also hope some of my tips will help you out. If you’ve got any tips for me, please let me know!

Shopping Tips and Accountability

Hello friend!

As lovers of fashion, we all want to keep on purchasing new items. We see something inspiring on a friend or blogger. There is always a new trend we want to follow. Or maybe we want to update our closet with the new colors of the season. We all want to shop, but we need to shop smart!

The reasons never end. But my clothing budget does. I cannot purchase every item my heart wants. So how do I shop smart and stay accountable? Read on for my tips.

  1. Sleep on it

I try to not purchase something the first day I see it. I try it on, if it looks good, I put it on my mental wish list. Then I go home. If I find myself still thinking about it and wishing for it the following day, then I revisit the store. I make a point of trying it on again. Sometimes in our initial infatuation with an item, we overlook important fit and comfort details. Finally, at this point, if it still looks and feels as good as I remember it, I can purchase it.

  2. Make a season’s buy list

Before each change of season, look through your items. See what you have plenty of and what needs to be replaced. Take note of what you’re missing. Look through magazines and decide which trends you’d like to participate in. Then make a list. Most importantly, stick to your list!

    Clothing wish list and packages

  3. Track your purchases

Keep a list of your monthly purchases. Either on a large chalk board, white board, or piece of paper. Each time you make a clothing purchase, write it and the cost of it on that sheet. You will be shocked at how long the list may get. At the end of the month, go through that list and compare it with your buy list. If you see that you have strayed greatly, be strict with yourself and make some returns.

  4. Remix what you’ve got

It’s so easy these days to quickly purchase something we see posted online. There are countless apps and emails that target our tendency to buy on a whim. While yes, often blogging is aimed at encouraging the reader to purchase the goods, you don’t have to comply every time. Part of being a smart shopper is to know when to NOT buy something. Go in your closet and see what options you have. You can often make a similar look with items you already have.

  5. Remember fashion lives on

It’s simple but true: there will always be something new to buy. So don’t get caught up in having everything. Trends come and go. Just pick the ones that truly work for you and your lifestyle. Also keep in mind that this isn’t your last chance to participate in a trend or buy something new. There is ALWAYS something new in fashion. It is okay to sit out a trend once in a while. Something newer and better is guaranteed to come around.

I hope my hints have helped you to be more selective in your shopping. Keep these in mind next time you are itching to get something new. Remember to shop smart, not just shop!

If you have hints for me, please share in the comments. Also, while you’re in the sharing mood, please share this post on your favorite social media platform.

Skirt Code: Why I prefer to wear skirts, Reason 1

Hello friend!

If you have known me (online or in person) for a while, you know that I prefer to wear mostly skirts. This is intentional. I love skirts! I often get questions about why I choose to wear skirts, especially to work. In this series I’d like to share every reason I have as to why I wear them.

Skirt: H&M; tank: J Crew; necklace: baublebar; shoes: J Crew factory; bag: Target

Today’s reason is my oldest one: they are more comfortable. I started mainly wearing skirts when I first returned to work from maternity leave. I found that my slacks just did not fit the same. The waistband dug in, the thigh area was snug, and the crotch was off. Instead of buying multiple new pairs of pants, I turned to my skirts.

As time went on and I lost the baby weight, I could once again fit into my pants. But by that point, I did not want to wear slacks to work. I had gotten used to skirts. They allotted a lot more freedom and comfort. I was hooked!

Introductions are in order

Hello friend!

It is with great excitement that I write my first fashion blog post. I say “fashion blog post” because I’ve had some experience with a blog before. I blogged my first few months as a new mom. Fashion blogging, however, has always been a passion of mine. While I was on maternity leave, I would voraciously read my favorite blogs and dream of the day that I would have time to write one of my own. Well, that time never came. But I will nonetheless attempt to start my blog and pursue my passion for fashion!

So you already know that I am a mom. My daughter is now 6 years old and a fashionista in her own right. I am also a working professional in the medical field. I work in pediatrics. In fact it is that setting that has spurred my fashion style. Because I work with children, I opt to wear fun and whimsical pieces as well as bright colors. Because I work in a hospital and have to look professional and knowledgeable, I tone down the whimsy factor with more polished and tailored pieces, hence my style, polished whimsy!

In this blog, I hope to share my personal style and opinions with you. I appreciate you reading my words and being my blog friend!
