Spotlight on: Talbots Sale

Hello friend! With so many retailers already offering great sales, I thought I’d share some of my wish list. Also, I have been planning on starting a new series where I feature my favorite retailers. Therefore, I decided to combine the two ideas and start my “Spotlight on” series discussing the great deals at the current Talbots sale.

Talbots Sale: What to Buy | leopard print | zebra print | pencil skirt | feminine style | classic style | shopping guide

While Talbots has been around for many years, I see few of us shopping there. I think it has the reputation of being for “older ladies.” I remember a few years back buying something from there and telling my coworker. She said “Really, you? That’s where my mom shops.” This reputation is unfortunate because I have gotten some amazing, youthful pieces from Talbots, often from their sales.

Previous Talbots Sale Purchases

The first time I actually went to Talbots was in pursuit of a cardigan. I had been looking for one in a specific shade of blue. One of the girls at church was wearing it and had told me she had purchased it there. Even though it wasn’t my typical store, the stubborn desire to attain that elusive blue cardigan led me there. Once I arrived, I was surprised at the bounty of items they offered, many in beautiful colors and prints that felt so “me.”

It was during that same trip that I purchased this beautiful zebra print pencil skirt. It is a staple in my closet, one I have worn many times. {Please forgive the poor quality photo, it was prior to my blogging days!}

Talbots Sale: What to Buy | leopard print | zebra print | pencil skirt | feminine style | classic style | shopping guide

Another skirt I purchased was a bold leopard print pencil skirt. I love how large the scale of the print is. It’s a unique skirt that has no rival in my closet. It also pairs beautifully with colors, especially green, as worn in my colorful coat post.

My Current Talbots Sale Wishlist

Because of the great sale going on now, I will be bringing home a few more pieces. I am eyeing the Houndstooth check sailor skirt. That’s because I am itching to do a pattern mix with houndstooth and buffalo plaid. I am also fawning over the back-bow suede pumps: it’s blue, it has a bow, do I need to say anything else? But there are so many other amazing options, so I’ll summarize them below for you.

While not on my own wish list, I do want to mention the sparkling stars button down shirt. It’s a white shirt with metallic gold dots, similar to the sold out shirt I was wearing in my prim class skirt post. So many of you had loved it, so I am pleased to find you a “dupe!”

Talbots Sale: Skirts

As you know, I have great luck finding beautiful skirts at Talbots. They have classic ones as well as fun prints. Here are the ones I am eyeing from the sale section.

Talbots Sale: Ruffles and Bows

Betcha you didn’t know that Tablots has fun and feminine pieces! Well they do. In fact, they adorn many of their items with fun bows, trims and ruffles.

Talbots Sale: Outerwear

Another category I rely on Talbots for is their outerwear. Besides the classic coats and jackets, they have many fun and youthful outerwear pieces. What I love most about their collections is that they feature a lot of color and print. I think that is especially stylish in the winter, when often all people see of you is your coat/jacket. Why not make it a fabulous one?

Talbots Sale: Shoes

Truth be told, before I set foot inside a Talbots store, I didn’t even know they sold shoes. But upon my first visit, I saw an amazing pair of leopard print shoes. Right away I knew they carried quality (and fun!) footwear. Just see for yourself below!

I hope you have enjoyed delving into one specific store with me. I encourage you to give Talbots a try. You will find, just like I did, that it is full of amazing pieces. And when they have markdowns, do not miss out. You can get great deals at a Talbots sale!

The Ugly Side of Blogging: Blog Plagiarism

Hello friend! Today we are delving into some deep waters. I will be discussing blog plagiarism and copyright infringement. Because these waters are fairly muddy, the right answer is often not clear. Therefore I will give you some tips on how to stay safe, protect your content, and avoid a bad reputation!

Now I am not a lawyer. In fact, even a bit of legal-eze makes my head spin. Therefore I will not be spouting out laws in this post. I will refer you to legalzoom for that. However I will share my experiences and provide some helpful tips.

Simple Tips to Avoid Blog Plagiarism | Ugly side of blogging | polished whimsy | everyday style blog

Blog Plagiarism: My Experience

Last year I had another blogger accuse me of copying her work. She thought a post I had done was very similar to one she had done, including some of the same items. While I could see the similarity in the post, I know in my heart that I did not do it to copy her. In fact I had done a post like this in the past. Furthermore, I had seen multiple other girls do similar posts. So it definitely was not a post that was unique to her account.

Now to her credit, she did it in a very calm and low-key manner. Instead of calling me out on a post or a comment, she sent me a private message with her concern. However, the fact was I did NOT copy her work. While I could see how my post was similar to hers, I know I did not consciously take it from her post. But that leaves me in a gray area: did I subconsciously copy her? Perhaps…

Nonetheless, it was a devastating blow to my blogging experience. I absolutely adored this blogger. I was probably her biggest fan. I had purchased many items she had showcased. She definitely was a huge inspiration for me. Therefore, for her to think this of me was so disheartening, mostly because I knew I could never change her mind. She firmly believed I copied her work.

The most difficult part was moving forward. After this interaction, I felt paralyzed. I didn’t know what to do. Was anything I did original? Was I unknowingly offending every blogger out there? I was scared to post anything. And when I did post, I felt obligated to defend or explain every outfit/pairing/set-up. It was quite a stressful ordeal.

Blog Plagiarism: What’s Original?

In this ever-growing world of fashion (and other) bloggers, what is actually an original idea? I see countless posts (mine included) of a cute outfit in front of a colorful wall, or a blogger holding up a product in focus with the rest of the frame blurred out. But none of us truly thought of this idea as an original thought. We likely saw it (on a blog, magazine, etc.) and either consciously or sub-consciously decided to do a similar post.

So where do we draw the line? It’s difficult because in blogging, plagiarism can happen beyond just copying one’s words. Is it plagiarism if you take a photo in the same pose as another blogger? How about in the same location? Or similarly styled outfit? It’s hard to say what’s reasonably similar and what’s plagiarism. So to stay safe, follow these tips.

Blog Plagiarism Tip 1: Strive for Originality

Do your best to come up with original content. Instead of using a picture from Pinterest and simply stating “PC: Pinterest,” take your own pretty shot of flowers. Better yet, get more creative and post something unique, instead of that ubiquitous shot of peonies.

Blog Plagiarism Tip 2: Ask Permission

If you are using someone else’s photo or exact words/concept on your blog, ask permission first! I did this for my red stripes and leopard print post. In order to use Brooklyn Blonde’s photo on my blog and Instagram, I messaged her and asked permission.

Blog Plagiarism Tip 3: Give Credit

If you know you got your inspiration from someone else, credit them! After my experience last year, I make it a point to always credit someone for inspiring me. This goes to build long term friendships and working relationships with other bloggers. Just be careful if you are always getting you inspiration from someone else. You want to have your own point of view right? See tip 1 above!

Blog Plagiarism Tip 4: Assume Innocence

I love the statement of “assume innocence.” It is a method of dealing with any concern or confrontation. To use this method, you must first assume that the “offender” has done whatever act of offense in innocence. If you come from a mindset of assuming that the other person “copied” your work from innocence, you can approach the conversation more calmly. Thus, resulting in an easy resolution.

Sometimes people have every intention of crediting someone else, but may just forget in the moment of writing a post. This happens to me countless times, especially during an Instagram story. In the effort to get all my words out coherently and within the time constraint, I may forget to shout out the person who inspired a look. So knowing that I have myself forgotten to do so, I don’t hold it against someone else if they don’t either!

I hope my tips will save you from any blog plagiarism or copyright infringement drama. If you have other tips, please comment below to share!

Skirtmas: Pleated Metalic Skirt {Day 11}

Hello friend and welcome to Day 11 of the 12 Days of Skirtmas. Today, I am styling a night out look, similar to Day 8, but even more glam! The look centers around a pleated metallic skirt. While I have worn a gold pleated skirt already on Skirtmas day 4, today’s look will be quite different. That way, you’ll have options on how to wear your pleated metallic skirts.

Styling a Pleated Metallic Skirt for a Night Out

As I showed you in Day 4 of Skirtmas, a pleated metallic skirt can be easily dressed down. But today I will be demonstrating how to dress it up.

The bright gold of the fabric makes it an obvious choice for evenings out. It is shiny, eye-catching and fabulous.

My Pleated Metallic Skirt Outfit

When I was styling this outfit, I knew I wanted to go full glam. Therefore I chose to wear the skirt with a fur coat. I chose my striped fur coat (first worn in this post) because I wanted multiple elements of style. The coat brings both pattern and texture, win win!

Underneath it I wore a simple black sweater. I chose this for two reasons. First, the outfit has a lot going on already, so it needs a basic to tie it all together. Second, it’s winter and it’s cold… enough said!

Of course my top isn’t just any old sweater. I chose a fun one with a bow, naturally!

I finished the look with simple but sexy booties. Bonus, with booties like this you can wear a thick sock underneath! Such an important factor for those of us you are cold-intolerant.

Because the outfit has so many details already, I chose to keep my accessories minimal. Therefore I just added a festive gold and black pom pom earrings.

I hope you enjoyed this glam styling of a pleated metallic skirt for day 11 of Skirtmas. Make sure to catch the finale of the 12 Days of Skirtmas tomorrow!

Skirtmas: Plaid Midi Skirt {Day 10}

Hello friend! It’s the tenth day of Skirtmas and so I give to thee a plaid midi skirt outfit. Now I know I’ve done many plaid outfits, including the Modcloth prim class hero on Skirtmas day 7. But what can I say, I love plaid, especially this time of year. So please indulge me a while longer while I showcase this pretty plaid skirt.

Tracy Reese Asymmetric Plaid Midi Skirt Review

The Tracy Reese asymmetric plaid midi skirt is made of a medium thick polyester blend that is dry clean only. As the name states, it has a beautiful asymmetric cut. It also has some fun details such as an unfinished hem at the bottom of the skirt and down the center seam. This helps to add texture and interest to the skirt.

The fit of the skirt is lovely. It drapes smoothly over the hips. I do think it runs a tad large though, so keep that in mind!

Because of the details of this skirt, particularly the raw hems, I wanted to pair it with a smooth and neutral top. Therefore I chose one of my new sweaters, the side slit button crew sweater from Target’s Who What Wear line. I love the buttons on the side. Details like that get me every time!

The gray color blended well with the skirt, allowing the blue in the plaid to pop.

I chose to wear red pumps with this look to add some more color. Since there is a light stripe of red in the skirt, I knew it would make a great accent color.

Using the same line of thinking, I chose another color in the plaid, mustard yellow, for my second accent color. If you recall my mustard yellow and red color crush post, I am already fond of this color combination. Therefore I confidently paired my mustard yellow purse with this plaid midi skirt outfit.

For earrings, I popped on a pair of beaded tassel earrings, also in red. I felt it balanced out the shoes. I then completed the look with my favorite gold layered necklace.

While I may be pushing it on the plaid skirts, I hope you recognize how singular and beautiful each one is. I sure do! Stay tuned for Skirtmas day 11!

Skirtmas: Anthropologie Sequined Soiree Skirt {Day 8}

Hello friend and welcome back to Skirtmas. For day 8, I am shifting gears away from work looks and towards a fun party look. With New Year’s Eve under 2 weeks away, we need to plan our party outfits. The winter holidays often call for sequins. Now who am I to ignore that call? So I say, bust out the sequins. The skirt I got is the Anthropologie sequined soiree skirt. Let me show you how I’m wearing it.

Anthropologie Sequined Soiree Skirt Review

The Anthropologie sequined soiree skirt is a well made, fun party skirt. It has a lining with a medium thick fabric, preventing the sequins from poking you. Thus making the skirt comfortable to wear. The design of the skirt is just beautiful: horizontal colorful stripes made of sequins! It’s a color and pattern lover’s delight!

The fit of the Anthropologie sequined soiree skirt is spot on. It is a classic A-line shape that is cut perfectly. Furthermore, it’s a fun length for evenings out, just a few inches above the knee.

Anthropologie Sequined Soiree Skirt Outfit

Because the skirt is such a statement piece, I chose to wear an understated top. Therefore I chose my fitted sweater (read more about it in the perfect layering sweater post). That way the skirt could play the starring role, while the top supported it! I could have worn a black sweater, but I chose a light blue. That’s because I felt the skirt already had a lot of black in it. However, if you will be wearing this for a major bash, a sleek black top will work beautifully!

Although I kept my top fairly simple, I did want to add some more fun to the outfit. Therefore I chose to wear patterned tights. This fits into the season as it functions to keep us warm. But it also adds another layer of interest to the outfit.

I completed my look with lace up booties.

Skirtmas: Modcloth Plaid Prim Class Hero Midi Skirt {Day 7}

Hello friend! For day 7 of Skirtmas, I decided to go classic Polished Whimsy and wear a pattern mixing outfit. In the fall, I am usually into wearing plaid, a lot of plaid! You may have noticed…When I saw the Modcloth plaid prim class hero midi skirt (why such a long name?), I wanted it right away. It reminded me of a green plaid skirt I wore a lot last year. Therefore, I knew I could do a lot with it.

Modcloth Plaid Prim Class Hero Midi Skirt Review

The Modcloth plaid prim class hero midi skirt is made of 100% medium-thick smooth cotton fabric that feels nice to the touch. It has a lining and lies nicely on the body. The skirt has a side zip as well as an elasticized waist at the back. When I first received it, the waist looked small and I was worried. But once I tried it on, it stretched to fit me comfortably. It falls just below the knee on my 5’4 frame, just where I like it!

Because I wear plaid so much, I like to pattern mix with it. {New to pattern mixing? Read my pattern mixing 101 post to get you started!} That way, I can get multiple unique outfits out of one item.

I was playing around with multiple other prints. At first I attempted another gingham and plaid look, but ultimately settled on polka dots instead. This particular polka dot shirt is especially festive in that the polka dots are gold!

Skirtmas: Color Block Pleated Skirt {Day 5}

Hello friend! It is day 5 of Skirtmas and since it is Sunday, I thought I’d feature a dressier skirt today. The skirt of the day is a Ted Baker color block pleated skirt. Since I have started Skirtmas, I have realized that I am absolutely obsessed with pleated skirts. Funny that I didn’t know that until now! But now that I am aware, I will fully embrace the obsession. Let me start by featuring one today!

Color Block Pleated Skirt: The Obsession

Now that I have insight into my pleated skirt obsession (see Skirtmas day 4 and Skirtmas day 1), I will be more aware of my skirt purchasing habits. But don’t hate me if you see another one (or two!) pleated skirts in the upcoming Skirtmas posts!

Color Block Pleated Skirt: The Outfit

When I first got the color block pleated skirt, I thought to pair it with ivory. That’s because I wanted a contrasting color to the black waistband. But at one point I chose to go with light pink, this sequined tee. That way, the top coordinated with the pretty color block in the skirt.

I also love how the top has sequins on it. It serves to add another layer of ornamentation to a bright holiday look.

For the shoes, I chose to go with classic black pumps. They matched the black ribbon of the waistband and help to ground the entire look.

For my accessories I chose rose gold pieces such as my Daniel Wellington Petite Melrose watch. However, for my purse, I chose a different metallic, a gold clutch. Mixing up metallics is another way to bring in contrast and interest to an outfit.
