Holiday Dress Guide

Hello friend! With the holiday season comes the invitation to many parties. Sometimes finding what to wear to these said parties can be stressful. Well fear not my friend, for I am here to help you. While I usually enjoy wearing separates (so I can mix and match them!), this year I am crushing on many beautiful dresses. Therefore I put together this holiday dress guide to guide you through the season!

Holiday dress guide: What to wear to all your holiday parties, from a classic red dress to velvet, sequins or a little black dress.

Holiday Dress Guide: Velvet Crush

You may remember from reading my 2017 fall trends post that velvet is in style for fall and winter. Well then, what better way to wear it than in your holiday attire? Luckily there are so many beautiful velvet dresses out there. I am swooning over this gorgeous open back velvet midi dress. I think it strikes the perfect chord between elegant and sexy.

Holiday Dress Guide: Festive in Red

While a red dress may be expected, there’s a reason it is ubiquitous this time of year: It’s fabulous! The color simply screams “party.” Furthermore, red is one of the “it” colors for the fall and winter. Therefore it’s the perfect time to dabble in wearing the color. From a bright ruby to a deeper burgundy, there is a shade for everyone. Personally, I am eyeing this red floral dress because I love the combination of light blue and red.

Holiday Dress Guide: Sparkles Abound

Even if you prefer to wear more subtle dresses year-round, when the holidays come around, you should step up your game a little. Why not try a dress with some sparkle and sass? You can even take a baby step by choosing a dress with a small panel of sequins, like this white and silver dress. I think it is a gorgeous piece with an ethereal quality.

Holiday Dress Guide: Little Black Dress

Which dress works for almost every occasion? Why, a little black dress of course! The LBD has long been the reigning monarch of the dresses in our closet. So don’t fight it! Sometimes a black dress is just what you need. I’ve been eyeing this sexy form-fitting faux leather one.  I love the ruching on the sleeves and the sleek lines of the dress. The name is also calling me: “The Witching Hour” dress. So clever! Here are some other favorites:

Although I am usually a skirt girl, this holiday season I am tempted to wear more dresses. That’s because I am surrounded by so many pretty ones. I hope my round-up has helped some of you to decide on what to wear. Either way, be confident, be happy, be safe and enjoy yourself!

Try This: Winter Kimono

Hello friend! With some cooler weather upon us, I have been playing with layers. One of the newest layering pieces I found is a winter kimono or ruana. What makes them “winter” is that they are made out of thicker fabrics than their summery counterparts. I have been wearing my winter ruana, the Anthropologie Mixed Stripes Kimono, non-stop. Let me show you how I am styling it.

Ruana vs. Kimono vs. Poncho vs. Cape

First and foremost, let’s get some definitions out of the way. Because if you are a stickler for definitions like I am, you are confused and frustrated with these words being used interchangeably. That’s because they are not in fact interchangeable. Each one of those items is a different type of clothing. So let’s get the definitions down before we go any further.

Poncho: I’ll start with a poncho as I think it is the one we are most familiar with. A poncho is an outerwear garment that is essentially a large piece of fabric (either square or rectangular) with a hole in it. To wear it, one simply slips it over the head. It has no sleeves or other openings.

Cape: A cape is similar to a poncho but it has an opening down the front which is usually sealed with a button closure. A cape also has slits for the arms to come through but no formed sleeves.

Kimono: A kimono is a long, open front cardigan with true sleeves. The sleeves are usually lose, as is the overall fit.

Ruana: A ruana is a cross between a poncho and a kimono. It has an opening down the front like a kimono. However, it does not have full sleeves like a kimono does. It may just have a stich or button to give the appearance of sleeves.

Mixed Stripes Kimono or Ruana?

If you’ve understood the definitions of a kimono and ruana, you will note that the mixed stripes kimono is actually a ruana! Gasp! It’s been named wrong! I will refrain from calling the fashion police on this grave error because whatever the name of this item, I simply adore it. I love the thick and nubby texture. It is so cozy and comforting on chilly days. But I especially love the bold stripes. It makes for a striking outfit every time!

Mixed Stripes Kimono for Play

The first time I wore the ruana was for my weekend getaway trip to San Francisco. With the weather there being cooler than in Los Angeles, I wanted a chic outer layer. The mixed stripes kimono was just the right item. I paired it with a black sweater and jeans. The result was exactly what I was looking for: chic, comfortable, and warm.

To add another layer of warmth I wore my favorite quilted over the knee boots (get this year’s version on sale here) and of course cozy socks underneath.

I then finished the look with my favorite necklace of the moment, the Brielle Statement Necklace. To top it all off I threw on a pair of sunnies. I thought the High Key in black fade added just the right amount of cool to the outfit.

Mixed Stripes Kimono for Day

To change up the look for  day, I decided to wear the mixed stripes kimono with a skirt. I chose a pencil skirt because I feel they look best with longer cardigans. You can read more about what I pair with long cardigans in my duster cardigans post and cardigan sweater outfits post. For this particular look, I decided to be a little risque and pair the ruana with a leather pencil skirt.

To keep it appropriate for day, I chose a light turtleneck for my top. However because I was ready to have some fun with patterns, I chose a striped turtleneck. I was excited to see how the two stripes paired together. I love a double stripe look, (remember this post?) Therefore I was looking forward to the result. Luckily, it did not disappoint. The stripes worked perfectly together. Check out my pattern mixing 101 post to learn more about that!

For accessories I opted for a sharp looking high heeled bootie. With the length of the skirt and the ruana, I wanted to create some height for myself. As for the necklace, I chose the Brielle pendant. Because I wore these outfits on different days, I hadn’t noticed I had worn different versions of the same necklace. What can I say, I like filigree!

In conclusion, whether we are calling it a kimono or a ruana, the mixed stripes kimono is going to be a major player in my wardrobe this season. I love how versatile it is. How would you wear it?

My Black Friday and Cyber Monday Picks

Hello friend! I hope you had a great Thanksgiving holiday. I enjoyed my turkey and some fun with family. But now that the eating is out of the way, it’s time for the shopping to begin. Now we all know that black Friday and cyber Monday are huge shopping days. While I don’t love the crowds or the commotion, I do love a good sale. Let me show you what I am eyeing and purchasing this year.

Best picks for black friday and cyber monday sales by Polished Whimsy

My Stance on Black Friday and Cyber Monday

What used to be a clearly defined day of sales (both black Friday and cyber Monday) has now turned into basically an entire week of sales. This can be bad or good. What’s bad is that the sales may not be as steep and they may run out of some items. What’s good is that you have ample time to shop. Furthermore, most of these sales are online as well as in store. Therefore you don’t even have to go into a store, score!

So join me in my jammies as I spend the weekend comfortably perusing the online sales and purchasing my wants/needs. To see how I shop during black Friday and cyber Monday sales, check out my strategies from last year.

Black Friday and Cyber Monday Sales: Banana Republic

I will be taking full advantage of the fantastic 50% off that Banana Republic is offering. First on my list is a fun red sweater with ruffle details on the shoulder. This will be perfect for any holiday parties. Of course Banana also has fantastic skirts, including this fringy blush one (also in black!). It’ll be a stunner at a New Year’s Eve party. See my other favorites below.

Black Friday and Cyber Monday Sales: Anthropologie

If you know me, you know I love Anthropologie. The whimsy, the boho, the parisian chic… Anthropologie has it all for me. Therefore I always check on their black Friday and cyber Monday sale too. I will not miss out on any discounts they offer. This year they are giving 30% off of everything, yippee! I am looking at some fun skirts for holiday parties.

Besides clothing, Anthropologie has beautiful and unique furniture. Since I am decorating my new home still, I will definitely check out and purchase some items for it. I am particularly interested in this beautiful lucite shelf. It’ll match my bed perfectly!

Black Friday and Cyber Monday Sales: Kate Spade

Kate Spade is having 30% off most items (code: givejoy), yay! So if you need a new purse (like this beauty) or pair of shoes, turn to Kate Spade. Also, don’t overlook their home section. I recently decorated my bathroom with Kate Spade. At 30% off, you can have a lot of fun!

Black Friday and Cyber Monday Sales: J Crew

Next to Anthropologie, J Crew is my favorite store. While I usually love J Crew’s skirts, right now I am obsessing over their pants. There are two pair of camo pants that I particulary like. One is a wide leg, the other a skinny leg. I’m still debating between the two. I am also loving this tuxedo style chino pant. The tuxedo stripe adds such a fun twist. Lastly, the any day pant looks like the perfect alternative to leggings.

Besides the pants, I am also loving this jacket with plaid ruffles. J crew is always my go-to for cute cardigans and tops. Check out some more favorites below.

So these are the stores I’m going to be visiting (online) during black Friday and cyber Monday. Which ones are you going to be shopping from?

My 2017 Thanksgiving Outfit

Hello friend! My Thanksgiving outfit has been planned for a while now and I’ve been itching to share it with you. So I am glad I get to do so today. I had purchased this sequin polka dot cardigan on one of my midnight online shopping sprees (blame it on the prosecco!) almost two months ago. I loved the details on the polka dots (they have sequins on them!). Then I was waiting for the perfect skirt to come my way… enter the Banana Republic ombre lace midi pencil skirt.

Ombre Lace Midi Pencil Skirt Review

Because I purchase most of my clothes online, sizing is often a concern. For this skirt I was especially cautious because it is called a midi skirt. Because I am 5’4, I have to be careful of skirts that may be too long. They tend to make me look short. Therefore for this skirt I chose to order the 2p. I went up a size as you customarily should when going from standard sizes to petite.

The fit is overall good. It is just a tad large on the waist. But I worry that a full size down would be too snug. As for the length, I am surprised it is classified as a midi. The 2p fell right at my knees. To be honest, I was hoping for a longer length, to get more of that 1940’s vibe. However, the fit was good overall, so I will be wearing it!

J Crew Sequin Polka Dot Cardigan Review

Now time to discuss the cardi! I simply adore it. The bold cranberry polka dot is just perfect for the holidays. The fit is fairly true to the Jackie cardigans overall, but may run a tad small on the shoulders. I don’t mind this as I like a snug cardigan, but if you are planning on wearing it buttoned up, keep that in mind!

The Final Thanksgiving Outfit

When I put the pieces together, I loved how they complemented each other while still standing out on their own. The variated colors of the skirt add almost a hint of stripes. Furthermore, the lace brings in another element of texture.

I love that the skirt has multiple shades of red in it. Luckily it complements the polka dots of the cardigan well.

For shoes I was torn between my blue velvet booties (to make a baby blue and burgundy color combination) or my mustard heels (for a mustard and burgundy color combination). In the end I chose the mustard as it popped more against the outfit.

For accessories I chose to keep it minimal with my delicate Brielle statement necklace. I chose to pair the necklace with a small pair of ear jackets from this Sugarfix trio. The combination works because they are all subtle pieces. The jewelry allows the details of the sweater to be the focus.

I hope you enjoyed this year’s Thanksgiving outfit. What are you wearing for the holiday?

Beauty Beat: Clarins Everlasting Cushion Foundation

Hello friend! Lately I’ve been using the Clarins Everlasting Cushion Foundation, a product I received to review from Octoly. It has quickly become a favorite, thus I wanted to share it here with you. To see the rest of my makeup routine, check out my 5 minute face.

What’s a Cushion Foundation

A cushion foundation is a type of foundation that is found in a compact. Is is still technically a liquid foundation; the liquid is just all soaked up inside a sponge in the compact.  Because it is liquid, the compact has a tight seal and shouldn’t be left open.

How to Apply a Cushion Foundation

A cushion foundation comes with its own puff. To apply, you simply pat the puff into the sponge and then pat the puff onto your face.

Clarins Everlasting Cushion Foundation Review

I had stayed away from cushion foundations because I had heard most of them are dewy. While a dewy finish may sound lovely to most, when you have oily skin like me, it can be an oil overload! However, when I saw that the Clarins Everlasting Cushion Foundation claimed to be long wearing, I was intrigued. I quickly put in an order and then excitedly waited for its arrival.

No makeup

When I first applied it, I loved the coverage and finish. It provides medium coverage with a natural skin-like finish.

The only thing I noticed is that the foundation feels tacky for a while. Therefore I had to powder. While I powder over every foundation (remember I am oily), I had to apply a healthy dose of powder to set this foundation. I used my favorite oil control powder, MAC blot powder.

Clarins Everlasting Cushion Foundation Longevity

To test the longevity of the Clarins Everlasting Cushion Foundation, I wore it all day during work. While I had some oil breakthrough, the foundation lasted all day. My redness stayed covered all day. Furthermore, the foundation didn’t break apart at all. Even at the end of my day, the color was even. Also, it helped keep my blush put all day.

To test how it lasts through touch-ups, I quickly blotted (with my Blotterazzi) and powdered some more. The results were still gorgeous. It didn’t look cakey or overdone.

So now I am sold on cushion foundations, well at least on the Clarins Everlasting Cushion Foundation. I have been wearing it non-stop. Do you have any other cushion foundations you enjoy? I’m curious if others perform just as well.

Pattern Primer: Camel Gingham

Hello friend! While I am usually the first to don colors, once in a while I seek out a neutral. That is true today. I have been on the hunt for a camel gingham top for a while. That’s because I love gingham (duh!) and I wanted one that felt very “fall” to me. Many of my other gingham tops sometimes feel too summery. Luckily the J Jill gingham knit top in camel recently arrived at my doorstep. Let me show you how I style it.

Neutral Camel Gingham Outfit

For my first styling of the camel gingham top, I played it safe and paired it with a black skirt. The look is pretty and polished.

I accessorized the outfit with my favorite black booties and a structured flap bag.

For jewelry, I chose my favorite dainty pendant necklace and some rings.

The look was an excellent start to styling this camel gingham top. But I wanted more…

Colorful Camel Gingham Outfit

So I tried styling the top with color. I figured with the top being so neutral, I needed a bold color, such as a jewel tone. Therefore, I chose to pair the camel gingham with magenta. The result is certainly bold, but still cohesive.

I love how the magenta skirt pops against the neutral gingham.

Because of the color in the skirt, I decided to go for a basic black shoe. This time I chose a classic pump.

For this neutral gingham outfit, I chose to wear rose gold accessories, including this petite tassel necklace.

After my two initial stylings of this camel gingham top, I have confirmed my “need” for  a neutral gingham print shirt. Next I plan to wear it with a tan and pink plaid blanket scarf, similar to my burgundy and pink post. What ways would you wear this top?

What to buy at the Sephora VIB Sale

  1. Essentials. Stock up on items you always use. That way you know your money won’t be wasted.
  2. Experiment. This is also a good time to try something new. Trialing a product you’ve had your eye on is a lot easier with that 20% off right?
  3. Splurges. Go ahead and treat yourself to that pricier item that you wouldn’t otherwise buy at full price.
  4. Gifts. The holidays are just around the corner. Think ahead and buy those gifts now with this discount. Some of my favorite gifts to purchase are the holiday sets (see below), or bath and body products. For example, the Fresh sugar set is a great set that will be perfect for just about anybody. Who doesn’t like soft lips?
  5. Sets. Again because of the holidays, there are many holiday sets released at this time. In addition to making good gifts, these sets are a great way to try a bunch of fun items. There are so many gorgeous lip sets that I am simply gaga over! Out of all of the sets, I am loving the Nars audacious lipsticks, the Marc Jacobs lip gloss set, and Peter Thomas Roth mask set.
  6. Fragrance. Since perfume rarely goes on sale, be sure to take advantage and purchase one at a discount.

My Recommendations from the Sephora VIB Sale

As you already know, I am quite the makeup-aholic. Luckily, I can use my addiction for good and advise you all on what to buy. Here are my favorite items that I think everyone should try:

  1. Buxom full on lip polish. These lip glosses are my favorites. They provide a pretty high shine without stickiness. My favorite shades are Emma, Celeste and Dolly. Make sure you don’t overlook Emma. She may seem tame, but she adds a gorgeous sheen and dimension to the lips.
  2. Nars audacious lipstick. These lipsticks are the king of lipsticks. They are creamy and super pigmented. If you haven’t tried one, you need to! I have Anna and I will like pick up either Anita or Barbara.
  3. Nars velvet lip pencil. This is another recent obsession of mine. I love these pencils! They provide opaque lip color and are so easy to use. My current favorites are Bahama and Do Me Baby (ahh Nars, thanks for the fun names too!). But I am also considering Lonely Heart and Train Bleu, some darker shades to get me through the fall.
  4. Becca highlighter. Oh the Becca highlighter. Every time I am editing photos and I am loving my highlighter, I remember it’s the Becca one. They are just so finely milled. Plus, they give a gorgeous shine without any chunky glitter. I like opal the best. But I am also eyeing moonstone. Palm tree print skirt and gingham pattern mixing with the J Crew linen skirt in palm tree print, pink gingham shirt and pink shoes. Becca highlighter from Sephora VIB sale.
  5. Beauty blender. This is a must if you wear cream or liquid foundation. A beauty blender truly blends foundation like nothing else. Unfortunately, it is a bit pricey, so now is a great time to purchase and stock up on them!
  6. Kat Von D palette. I just adore the Kat Von D eye palettes. There are so many options. If you don’t have any, then I suggest starting with the shade and light eye palette or the shade and light face palette. Both are amazing products that you will definitely use.
  7. Nars eye shadow primer. This is my go-to eye shadow primer. If you have oily eye lids like I do, this product is a must for you. You only need a tiny bit, so the tube lasts a long time.
  8. Urban Decay 24/7 waterline eyeliner: If you’ve seen my five minute face post, you know how vital this eyeliner is to me. In fact, I wear this eyeliner everyday. It is the quickest way to bring attention to your eyes. I have it in black and brown and am also considering getting the gray and blue.

What I’m Buying at the Sephora VIB Sale

While it is tempting to go crazy and overbuy, I will follow my one advice above and stock up on my essentials. Similar to years past, I am stocking up on some beauty blenders (my essentials). I am also trying the Giorgio Armani power fabric foundation. I’ve heard great things and will love to try it at a discounted price. Furthermore, I will likely treat myself to a Nars velvet lip pencil or audacious lipstick as I am currently obsessed with both! Finally, I will stock up on my favorite fragrance, Florabotanica.

Which products are you buying from the Sephora VIB sale? Let me know so I can snag it too!

Color Crush: Olive and Blush

Hello friend! One of the things I have enjoyed most about getting into fashion blogging has been getting inspiration from others. Case in point is today’s outfit. Before my days on Instagram, I didn’t like the color olive green. In fact, it wasn’t until I had a week-long olive green style challenge that I realized how versatile it is. It was during that challenge that I was first prompted to wear olive and blush together. The rest is history.

The Color Theory Behind Olive and Blush

Now we know we aesthetically like the combination of olive and blush. But does it work with color theory? This one is a bit tough as neither are primary colors. In fact, pink is not a color at all! You can read more about that in my pink and red post. Similarly, olive is a tint of yellow (made by adding black to yellow). Therefor the parent colors of this color combination are yellow and red.

Olive and blush color combination; How to mix colors; colorful outfit; fall colors; everyday style blogger

Because yellow and red can be part of a triad, the color combination is perceived as harmonious by the eye. Therefore we can deduce that their tints are also harmonious. I think this is a safe assumption as we have olive and blush combinations everywhere!

My Olive and Blush Outfit

When I purchased this dress last year, I right away knew I wanted to pair it with blush pink. I loved the color combination and thought it would be an elegant way of bringing in some pops of color. Because the dress is a one piece and so pretty on its own, I decided to only use accessories to play with the color scheme. However, I was also lucky to find a light pink wall to photograph the outfit. That was certainly a bonus!

Olive and blush color combination; How to mix colors; colorful outfit; fall colors; everyday style blogger Olive and blush color combination; How to mix colors; colorful outfit; fall colors; everyday style blogger

I chose a blush pink purse and earrings to add significant pops of color to the olive green dress. For the rest of my jewelry I chose to stick with rose gold tones to complement the blush pink.

Olive and blush color combination; How to mix colors; colorful outfit; fall colors; everyday style blogger Olive and blush color combination; How to mix colors; colorful outfit; fall colors; everyday style blogger Olive and blush color combination; How to mix colors; colorful outfit; fall colors; everyday style blogger

For shoes I decided to avoid any more color as I wanted the olive and blush to be the focus. Furthermore, since the bag was so large, I thought two pops of blush pink were enough to achieve the look I wanted. Therefore I chose a metallic silver pump. I figured with metallics on trend for fall, I couldn’t go wrong.

Other Options for this Olive and Blush Outfit

Other ways to wear olive and blush color combination with this dress are:

  1. Swap out the blush pink bag for a blush sock boot (or this F21 option).
  2. Exchange the blush earrings for a bold blush pink necklace.
  3. Swap out the blush earrings for a pink tone scarf.
  4. Wear a blush pink leather jacket (or the twill moto version) and forego the pink purse.

Whichever way you wear it, olive and blush make for a great color combination. If you haven’t yet tried it, you need to now! To help you with that process, I have linked some options for you below, including some similar style dresses.

Current Obsession: Cardigan Sweater Outfits

Hello friend! With the arrival of cooler temps, I am turning to layers to keep me warm and stylish. A look I’ve been wearing a lot lately involves cozy cardigan sweaters. I am loving layering them over both casual and work outfits. Let me show you my cardigan sweater outfits.

How to wear cardigan sweater outfits: casual cardigan sweater outfit, pattern mixing with J crew striped turtleneck, Target mossimo, camo print cardigan, chunky cardigan, studded boots, J crew ivory pencil skirt, Vionic Rory booties, leopard print cardigan

The obsession started last year when I purchased a burgundy cardigan sweater from Target. I wore that all fall and winter. You can see it in my mustard and burgundy post. Because I loved the sweater so much, when I saw similar ones this year at Target, I had to get a couple more. This time I decided to venture out of the solids and purchase patterned cardigan sweaters.

My Picks for Cardigan Sweater Outfits

This year the cardigan sweaters abound, so you should have no trouble finding one. However, because I’ve been so into them, I keep finding amazing ones. Therefore I will list my favorites below in case you want to snag one too! The ones I recently picked up are a camo print cardigan and a leopard print cardigan. I am also highly considering picking up this red gingham one. It’ll be lovely for the holiday season!

How to Style Cardigan Sweater Outfits

Wearing cardigan sweater outfits is easy. Many of the rules of duster cardigan outfits also apply here. I think cardigan sweaters are perfect to wear to work as well as on days off.

Cardigan Sweater Outfits for Work

The first two times I wore this cardigan to work, I wore it on the weekends with jeans and a tee. But I wanted to challenge myself and wear it on a weekday when I have to look more professional. It turns out it was quite easy to do. I simply changed out the jeans for a skirt and voila! I had a picture perfect work outfit!

The key to making this look work is keeping the other pieces professional. A pencil skirt is therefore essential. Not only is it the epitome of professional work wear, it’s also sleek and streamlined. It’s the perfect match for a bulkier sweater cardigan.

For accessories I chose to play off of the colors in the sweater. Therefore I wore my brown Vionic Rory booties. I love how it has so many interesting details but without the bulk. A streamlined bootie like this helps to elongate the leg and to keep the outfit professional looking.

One of the details I liked best about this particular cardigan is that there is pink in the leopard spots. Therefore I played off of that in my necklace.

Cardigan Sweater Outfits for Casual Wear

For my casual take on cardigan sweater outfits, I chose to layer with leather leggings and a striped turtleneck. The stripes add a fun pattern mixing opportunity (you know I couldn’t resist!).

A longer length cardigan such as this one is perfect to layer with a turtleneck. It elongates the body and produces such a regal silhouette.

While this is the more casual look of the two, this outfit can easily be made work appropriate by changing out the leather leggings for a leather (or other fabric) pencil skirt.

I hope you can see how easy it is to style cardigan sweater outfits. I am just loving them and will be wearing them throughout the colder months. Will you be wearing them too? Let me know how you are styling yours! Details from both outfits are linked below for your perusal!

The Ugly Side of Blogging: Blogging for Money

Hello friend! I have been following fashion blogs for years. But never before in history has blogging been so popular. It’s gotten to the point that it feels like everyone is a blogger. Why is that I wonder? In the past blogging used to be a hobby. However in recent years it has gained momentum as a career (for some, a very select few). It is the draw of blogging for money that has caused this large surge of new bloggers.

Blogging for money: The ugly side of blogging

While it is very difficult to make a good living off of a blog, many talented individuals have managed to do so, after years of hard work. However because of the possibility of blogging for money, being your own boss, etc, the blogging world in inundated with new people daily trying to become the next blogging “It” girl.

Of course there is nothing inherently wrong with people trying out a new hobby or potential job. But the appeal of blogging for money has brought about many questionable behaviors (see ugly side of blogging series). Many of these include the exchange of money for “help” in making it as a blogger. I have been watching the money trail carefully and have made these observations.

Blogging for Money: Blog Classes

I will have to admit that I have fallen prey to this: successful bloggers/influencers selling classes on how to find success in blogging. I have purchased 3 classes. Sadly, I have yet to finish one of them. So the lesson here is simple: don’t purchase if you don’t have the time to sit down and go through it all!

Another negative about these blog classes is that I already knew a lot of the information. One class spent a lot of time going over very simple things like how to navigate Instagram. Another class spent a lot of time trying to get me to define my brand. Since I had been on Instagram for over three years, I already knew how to navigate it. Furthermore, I have solidified my brand. Therefore these classes didn’t help me much.

I worry that these classes don’t give all that much information, but are packaged prettily to entice new bloggers, especially those who are blogging for money. I feel that the only person making money in this transaction is the “teacher.” I was especially turned off by one class that offered a “special” that expired within an hour. That is an old and cliché sales technique: to put pressure on the customer to buy now or lose out on a great offer.

Blogging for Money: Influencer Groups

I’ve seen a few influencer groups. Some are just closed groups on Facebook. Others are formal groups with private websites. In theory I think these are great. However, always be aware when someone takes your money. Are you getting out of the group what you’re putting in?

Similar to above, if you don’t have the time to read through all of the articles posted in the group, it’s likely not worth your money. Also, these groups are made for the true beginner. If you are somewhere in the middle, you have already figured out some of the information. Therefore it may not be worth your money to join such a group.

It also bothers me that these groups set up a step by step guide to starting a blog and growing a following. That has resulted in a bunch of cookie cutter blogs that don’t offer anything unique. Furthermore, a lot of the girls in these groups had followed many of the negative ways of increasing Instagram following and Instagram engagement. While I can’t blame these organizations for it entirely, I think it has tainted the influencer world a bit.

Blogging for Money: Instagram Page features

This method I find particularly frustrating. This practice consists of a large Instagram account charging other accounts to be featured on their page. The premise is that the smaller blogger being featured on the large account will get a lot of exposure and new followers. These feature accounts are usually just photo after photo of different people. It’s rarely a cohesive page.

I would not encourage using this technique. I don’t even know if the followers of these large accounts are real people or full of bots, so you won’t know if your photo is truly being seen by a lot of people. Furthermore, the entire practice upsets me. It feels like these accounts are there just to make a profit off of a hard working blogger. So whether you are blogging for money or not, be aware of this practice.

In conclusion, the draw of blogging for money has brought about many new bloggers and influencers. While it is great to have a variety of influencers out there, we need to keep in mind a couple of things. One, it’s not all about the money! If your only reason to blog is to make money, reconsider your goals! Two, it takes time to truly “make it” as a blogger. Be patient, kind and honorable.

Leave the shady actions behind. Blogging for money shouldn’t be your biggest draw to the blogging world. Let’s concentrate on content and building real relationships.
