Pattern Primer: Pineapple A-line Skirt

Hello friend! With summer in full swing, I want to do a mini-series on fun summer patterns. Well nothing tops that list more than pineapples. Over the last two years, pineapples have really taken a hold of the summer trends. This year is of no exception with the release of the J Crew Ratti painted pineapple a line skirt.

How to style pineapple print items with the J crew ratti painted pineapple a line skirt and blue striped tee for a pattern mixing cute and colorful outfit

Chambray and J Crew Ratti Painted Pineapple A Line Skirt

When I purchase a skirt, I almost inevitably pair it first with a chambray top. I think it always produces a crisp and refined look. Therefore I immediately paired the J Crew Ratti painted pineapple a line skirt with some chambray. For the summer months, I gravitate towards this sleeveless chambray top. While in the winter, I will opt for this one or that one! But truly, all three make for perfect ensembles.

My style trick did not fail, the outfit looks great. Of course I played up the fun factor with my bright pink sandals.

I also added some more pink with my clutch. Because they are different shades, I think it adds some dimension to the outfit. The rattan also echos the summer feel of the J Crew Ratti painted pineapple a line skirt!

As for accessories I kept it simple with a gold watch but added a touch of whimsy with my earrings. I chose to wear a pineapple pair to further reinforce the fun trend!

Polka Dots and J Crew Ratti Painted Pineapple A Line Skirt

Now I’m sure no one is surprised that I wanted to pattern mix with this skirt. However, I do recommend exercising some caution with this mix. The pineapple print is quite bold. Therefore I would choose a smaller print to wear with the skirt. My first thought was a dainty polka dot. As I had hypothesized, the polka dots matched the J Crew Ratti painted pineapple a line skirt perfectly.

Stripes and J Crew Ratti Painted Pineapple A Line Skirt

Because I liked the pattern mix above so much, I decided to try it with stripes. The same rule applies: choose a small scale stripe! I had a blue striped tee, but a green one would also work. Or try a pink one for a more monochromatic look!

Since I was going for a more casual look, with a t shirt, I decided to wear studded strappy flat sandals. I think a cute graphic tee with blues, greens or pinks would also be a cute look (I’ll link some below)! I couldn’t be happier with the combination!

Trendy Slides and J Crew Ratti Painted Pineapple A Line Skirt

Another way to do a stripes and pineapple pattern mix is to wear striped shoes. I thought it would be great to bring in another trend, the slide sandals. The color and thin scale of the stripes work perfectly with the J Crew Ratti painted pineapple a line skirt. The overall effect is the same as above, but on a smaller scale. So if you’re not comfortable yet wearing a full on pattern mix outfit, try this instead. To get more pattern mixing guidance, check out my pattern mix 101 post.

It’s obvious I am adoring my J Crew Ratti painted pineapple a line skirt. There are so many ways to wear it. However, if you prefer another pineapple print, there are tons to choose from. I am linking my favorites below. Let me know how you are wearing your pineapple print items!

Pattern Primer: Rugby Stripe Pattern Mixing

Hello friend! As you know, I adore to pattern mix. In fact, I tend to do so every chance I get! Furthermore, stripes are one of my favorite patterns. Therefore it’s no surprise I wear a lot of stripes. Recently I have been playing a lot with rugby stripes (a thick scale stripe inspired by rugby uniforms). Therefore I want to share how to wear them. Specifically, I want to show how fun (and easy) it is to do rugby stripe pattern mixing.

How to style rugby stripe pattern mixing outfits

Rule for Rugby Stripe Pattern Mixing

The key to making these (and any) pattern mixes work is to pair prints of different scale (see pattern mixing 101 post). Rugby stripes are already fairly bold. So you need your second print to be significantly smaller or larger. I usually opt for a larger second print, but that’s my personal taste. Do what works for you! In case you’re in need of some rugby stripes in your life, I have rounded some up here:

Floral Midi Rugby Stripe Pattern Mixing

For me, stripes and floral print just always go together. Therefore I pair them frequently in my pattern mixes. I’ve done that here once again. Of course I kept my golden rule, by choosing a large scale floral print.

Leopard and Rugby Stripe Pattern Mixing

While I love a good black and white stripe tee, I have long been searching for a perfect tan and white one as well. That’s mainly because I’ve been wanting to wear it with this floral skirt. So when I finally found this one at Madewell, I purchased it right away. The outfit lived up to my expectations. It was worth the wait!

While I have worn this skirt numerous times with black and white pattern mixes, I have always pined to wear it with a tan pattern. I am happy to see that my instinct was correct. It just makes for a softer pattern mix. I love it!

For this outfit, I also chose to try a triple pattern mix by adding in the leopard print clutch. This was an easy decision as I often wear leopard print with this skirt (the colors just call for it!). It works, mainly because I follow my triple pattern mix rules. I also added gold toned jewelry to complete the look.

Floral Pencil Skirt Rugby Stripe Pattern Mixing

Keeping with the floral and rugby stripe pattern mixing combination, I chose to pair the tee with a floral pencil skirt. It’s a tad bolder look than the one above. That’s because it’s not only bold prints, but also bold colors. But you know me: I don’t shy away from either. Therefore I adore this look!

Rugby stripe patter mixing with J Crew floral punk skirt and black and white striped tee shirt Rugby stripe patter mixing with J Crew floral punk skirt and black and white striped tee shirt Rugby stripe patter mixing with J Crew floral punk skirt and black and white striped tee shirt

Although the look is quite bold, I think it is still perfectly suitable for most workplaces. Hence the reason I chose to pair the outfit with simple black pumps, to further reiterate its work appropriateness! But I couldn’t resist adding some more color with the bright earrings (sorry!).

Double Stripe Rugby Stripe Pattern Mixing

At this point I had done plenty of floral prints. Plus I wanted to do another double stripes look (I had done a few on Instagram a while back). Therefore I decided to pair the rugby stripe tee with my skirt du jour: the J Crew pop stripe skirt. The result was a fun and uniform look.

Current Obsession: Colorful Striped Skirt

Hello friend! If you know me in real life, then you know that I don’t just have a mild interest in things. If I am into something, I am INTO it! Right now that something is the colorful striped skirt. It’s probably no surprise: I like color…I like stripes…I like skirts. Therefore it is very fitting that I like colorful striped skirts.

I have played around with colorful stripes before (multi-colored striped shirt). But recently my obsession has narrowed around skirts specifically. Let me show you how I am wearing my colorful striped skirts.

5 colorful striped skirt outfit ideas.

Bright and Work Ready Colorful Striped Skirt

When I saw the J Crew pop stripe skirt, I just had to have it. The bold colors and the stripes were exactly what I’ve been looking for. The cut and length of the skirt also ensured me that it would make a great work outfit. Therefore I immediately paired it with a scoop tee and heels for an office-ready look.

For accessories I thought it would be fun to bring in a second pattern. Therefore I added more stripes with my clutch. I also chose to showcase one bold piece of jewelry, my bib necklace. The necklace looks great here because the low scoop neckline of the top allows it to be the focus.

Whimsical Colorful Striped Skirt

Another colorful striped skirt I have is a white A-line Kate Spade one that I purchased on vacation last summer. It was another case of love at first sight! The sweet pastels in these stripes make it so easy to pair with some of my favorite pieces. Case in point is this look below, where I paired up the stripes with polka dots, pattern mixing heaven!

It was equally fun to choose my accessories for this look: I simply used more colors in the skirt. I chose two shades of pink for my purse and shoes. As luck would have it, I also found a fun pink wall where I took the photos. With all of the colors in the outfit, I chose to keep my earrings neutral with a simple white pair.

Colorful Striped Skirt for the Weekend

Just in case you thought the colorful striped skirt was just for the work week, I also have a casual look. Here I am wearing the J Crew Factory sidewalk skirt with a fun graphic tee and denim jacket. I added a pair of pretty jeweled sandals and I’m set. Whether it’s running errands or catching up with friends, this look will work for the entire weekend.

The Colorful Striped Skirt Dresses Up

It is rare to find a colorful striped skirt for dressier occasions and styles. Therefore when I saw this long ball gown style skirt, I knew I had to have it. It is certainly not something I can wear daily. However, it is a long-term item, meaning that I can wear it for a long time. It’s not of a specific style or fashion that will go out of style. So as long as I’ll like color and stripes, I will like this skirt!

I paired the skirt with a denim corset top. Because I wore the skirt with a denim top, I wanted to add more pops of color with my accessories. Therefore I wore my red pumps and fun yellow earrings.

Neutral Colorful Striped Skirt

While I love a good colorful striped skirt, many of them are summer items (light weight material, pastel colors, etc.) and I feel like I can’t wear them year around. However this past winter I found this striped midi skirt. With its thicker fabric and darker colorful stripes, this skirt is the winter equivalent of the others! Hooray!

For this neutral colorful striped skirt look, I paired the skirt with one of my go-to’s: a chambray button down shirt. I added a blazer and heels and the look is complete! I kept the jewelry minimal with a pair of pretty hoops.

So while I am very much obsessed with every colorful striped skirt I see, I don’t feel bad purchasing a few. Because they are so versatile and fit my style so well, I will wear them for a long time. I hope you won’t get sick of seeing them!

Try This: Spring Leather Jacket

Hello friend! During my spring wardrobe transition, I put away a lot of my winter items. However, there were a few things I kept. Specifically, my leather jackets. Although they are inherently a cool weather item, I think leather jackets can also be a perfect transition piece. Let me show you how to update your look with a spring leather jacket.

Styling leather jackets for spring work outfits. From pattern mixing with midi skirts to sharp pencil skirts.

How to Make Your Jacket Spring Ready:

  1. Wear your leather jacket with lighter pieces. With the chill of winter behind us, we can forego the sweaters and scarves. Instead, we can now pair our leather jackets with airy and feminine fabrics. So go ahead and throw it on over your pretty eyelet blouse or frilly off the shoulder top. The juxtaposition will be lovely, trust me!
  2. Along the lines of the above reason, also pair your jacket with shorter hems. Shorter hemlines, be it skirts or shorts, will automatically push the outfit into a warm weather look.
  3. Change out your jacket for a spring color. If you are on the market for a new jacket, consider a pretty color for your spring leather jacket! I’ve seen some gorgeous ones in pinks, blues and lavender!

Preppy Cool Spring Leather Jacket

In case you thought the spring leather jacket was only for the weekend, I made sure to style a work appropriate look.

Therefore for my first outfit, I chose to pair this blush pink spring leather jacket with a seersucker striped pencil skirt, this year’s version here. The outfit is perfectly ready for work, but with a punch of personality.

To play up the cool factor, I added a bold bib necklace and fun metallic sunglasses.

Playful and Colorful Spring Leather Jacket

For a more colorful outfit with a spring leather jacket, try what I’ve done here. This time I went bold, opting to repeat a favorite color combination: light blue and red. Hey, if it ain’t broke, why fix it, right?

The light blue leather jacket is a quick way to update your wardrobe. It not only adds color, but also adds a different texture and even some attitude to the outfit. The outfit without the jacket is a sweet look with a tee and pleated skirt. But add the jacket and you’ve got a lot more going on. The leather and styling of the jacket brings a “toughness” and “coolness” to the look, both of which I can use once in a while!

Of course I had to stay true to myself and bring in some pattern mixing. Therefore I opted to wear the pieces with a striped tee and my favorite floral heels.

And finally for accessories, I chose to add a fun pair of earrings and a few statement rings. Pops of red on the lips and tips completes this fun and colorful spring leather outfit!

With the two foolproof examples I’ve shown here, you too should try a spring leather jacket! Let me know how you plan to wear yours!

One Item Four Ways: Long Vest

Hello friend! Now that spring is here, I am officially transitioning my wardrobe. You can read my spring transition post first to catch up on my plans. Furthermore, I will simply give you an example here. I am taking one of my fun winter pieces, a camel long vest, and showing you how to wear it in the spring.

Long Vest for Cold Weather

First, let me show you how I styled it during the winter. One of my favorite ways to wear it in the cold, was with many other layers. Layering with a blanket scarf on top of the long vest was an elegant and eye-catching look.

Long Vest and Leather Leggings

Another time I wore my long vest recently, was to make my Gray Monroe leather leggings work appropriate. Here I did a simple color blocking outfit with a chambray shirt and the leggings. You can read more about it in my leather leggings post.

Casual and Distressed

A recent re-style I did was for this original red stripes and leopard print post. One of the key purposes of that post was to point out how you can mix and match pieces to get the same “feel” of an outfit without having to have the exact replica. To further prove that point, I used that inspiration to create this look here. This time, I used the long vest as my camel piece and paired it with my current favorite jeans.

So if you’re loving the looks so far and are in need of a long vest, never fear friend, because I’ve rounded up a bunch for you right here:

Preppy and Spring Ready

Now we will move into our warmer weather looks. This first one is using shades of navy, with a pop of pretty spring florals. The long vest is still central to the outfit, but the entire outfit feels more spring-like now with the lighter fabrics.

For the accessories in this look, I added a second print with the floral shoes. They also served to add a pop of color while still looking unified thanks to the blue in the shoe. As for the purse, I chose my navy and gold stripe clutch. I’m not sure, but I think that counts as a third print. You know how much I adore a good triple pattern mix! And last for the earrings, I chose my eye-catching Zosma drops from Baublebar.

Spring Staples and Trends

Finally we come to my last look, if you’ve been counting, that actually makes 5 looks. I figured you wouldn’t mind another example… you’re welcome! 😉 For this look, I chose to combine spring staples (white jeans) with spring trends (embroidery). Therefore, I paired this pretty scarf with my gingham shirt, white jeans, and of course the long vest.

Skirt Code: Why I Prefer to Wear Skirts, Reason 3

Hello friend! If you’ve been following me for some time now, you know that I adore wearing skirts. While my penchant to wear skirts came around slowly, it is a style I have fully embraced. First, if you need to catch up, read my previous skirt code posts. The third reason that I opt to wear skirts is that it allows for me to have fun with tights. Pairing a skirt and tights is a simple way to increase the wear of your skirts.

Pattern mixing fashion blogger polished whimsy demonstrates why she likes to wear a skirt and tights by wearing polka dot tights with plaid shoes.

Because we have a relatively mild winter in Southern California, I can still comfortably wear skirts in the winter. That allows for me to use tights as a fun accessory. Choosing a skirt and tights over a pair of pants has many more possibilities for a fun outfit. Whether I choose a great color or a fun pattern, tights can bring an added element to the outfit.

Pattern mixing fashion blogger polished whimsy demonstrates why she likes to wear a skirt and tights by wearing polka dot tights with plaid shoes.

For this outfit, I specifically decided to wear solid colors in my shirt and skirt so that the tights and shoes stood out. This is to demonstrate my point that even with a simple outfit, patterned tights and shoes can bring in so much character.

Pattern mixing fashion blogger polished whimsy demonstrates why she likes to wear a skirt and tights by wearing polka dot tights with plaid shoes.Pattern mixing fashion blogger polished whimsy demonstrates why she likes to wear a skirt and tights by wearing polka dot tights with plaid shoes.

Now of course, you can be more creative and mix prints in your skirts and tights, or even include your shoes. You know I am always up for a good triple pattern mix. And this is my exact point, wearing a skirt allows you to have the opportunity to wear two patterns on your bottom half. Whereas if you were wearing pants, you would only have one item and thus one pattern! I rest my case!

Since there is so much focus on the tights and shoes, I kept the rest of my accessories minimal. I added another pop of color with my gold purse. As for my wrists I threw on a fun arm party for one and let the other one go bare. Lastly for my earrings, I chose a bold pair, the Zosma drops from Baublebar.

Pattern mixing fashion blogger polished whimsy demonstrates why she likes to wear a skirt and tights by wearing polka dot tights with plaid shoes. Pattern mixing fashion blogger polished whimsy demonstrates why she likes to wear a skirt and tights by wearing polka dot tights with plaid shoes.

Because I love my arm party so much, here is a close up of it. I am wearing my Daniel Wellington Dapper watch (you can use code “POLISHEDWHIMSY” for 15% off of any watches). I am also wearing my Trellis Lane Aria and Olivia bracelets (you can use code “POLISHED25” for 25% off all jewelry).

Pattern mixing fashion blogger polished whimsy demonstrates why she likes to wear a skirt and tights by wearing polka dot tights with plaid shoes.

In conclusion, it really is fun to have another item of clothing to mix up colors and patterns. Wearing skirts and tights is an easy way of getting that opportunity. Hence the third reason that I prefer to wear skirts over pants! How do you feel about wearing a skirt and tights? Which one are you more interested in adding in a pair of tights: a pattern or color?

Try This: Striped Fur Coat

Hello friend! While I have always liked the look of fur (and faux fur) coats, I haven’t truly felt the need for it. First because I live in Southern California, and our winters are fairly mild. Second, because I am petite and I worry that a large coat would drown me. But when I saw this short striped fur coat on Make Me Chic, I thought it would be the perfect one for me.

Polished whimsy in striped fur coat

Edgy Striped Fur Coat

For my first look, I knew I wanted to pair the coat with multiple textures, including distressed denim. Therefore I chose my new and very distressed pair of American Eagle jeans. To add another element of texture, I wore my black lace blouse underneath.

I loved how it turned out. The juxtaposition of the textures is exactly what I wanted.

For my accessories I kept it simple with just a beautiful pair of earrings and my Rebecca Minkoff Love bag. This time I doubled up the chain on the bag to make it more of a shoulder bag than a crossbody. That small change makes such a difference in the bag.

As for the shoes, I wanted to add some subtle pattern mixing, so I wore my favorite pair of leopard print heels. Because the shoe also has black in it, it helps it to blend in with the outfit while still providing a pop of interest.

Feminine Striped Fur Coat

For my second look, I wanted to pair the striped fur coat with a feminine and flowy skirt. And what better skirt than my new pleated velvet one? An added bonus to this combination is another beautiful play on textures.

Polished whimsy in striped fur coat and pleated velvet skirtPolished whimsy in striped fur coat and pleated velvet skirt

I just love pairing velvet and fur for winter. For shoes I went with my old stand-by silver pumps. They never fail me!

Polished whimsy in striped fur coat and pleated velvet skirtPolished whimsy in striped fur coat and pleated velvet skirtBecause there is so much texture already in the outfit, I wanted to keep the jewelry minimal. Therefore I just wore a pair of mini tassel earrings and a statement ring. And finally, I topped it all off with a small clutch.

Although it took me a while to start wearing fur coats, I am now head over heels, thanks to this beautiful striped fur coat from Make Me Chic. Therefore, you will likely see me wearing it quite often this winter. Knowing myself, I will try to change up the look each time. So if you have any suggestions, please let me know!

Pattern Primer: Winter Florals

Hello friend! While we expect to wear floral print in spring and summer, we don’t have to leave it all behind in the cooler months. I’ve shown you before how to wear floral prints in the fall. Now, let me show you how to wear winter florals.

Muted Winter Florals

One of the ways I like to wear a floral print in the winter, is to choose a muted color palette. Therefore I forego the bright pinks and reds. Instead I opt for grays, mauves, and winter white. Here I chose a scarf with these beautiful muted shades in a lovely winter florals pattern.

Polished whimsy in winter florals Polished whimsy in winter florals

For another look, I chose more of a neutral color scheme. Here I paired the white and metallic floral tee with a  polka dot skirt. Because the colors are neutral, I decided to play it up with my patterns by adding leopard print shoes.

For accessories, I stuck with the color scheme and went with gray tassel earrings. Because I love pairing pink with gray, I chose to wear my pink purse with this look.

Dark Winter Florals

The second way I like to wear winter florals is by opting for dark and rich colors. To differentiate from fall florals, I choose deep plums and blues. Here I have a purple tone floral dress. The colors simply scream winter!

For the jewelry, I kept with the tones of the dress and chose a gray wrap choker.

For the last look, I opted for a blue and brown floral print skirt. I paired it with a black criss cross tee.

For my accessories, I kept the purse and shoes black to further darken the look and hence make it more winter-y! I then echoed the blue in the skirt with my blue druzy stud earrings.

With so many options for winter florals around, I urge you to give it a try! Whether it’s an icy-cool color scheme or a deep blue, wearing prints with winter florals is easy to do. If you need to add some winter florals into your wardrobe, check out the items from this post as well as some of my recommendations below!

Try This: Plaid and Lace

Hello friend! As you know from reading my blog, I enjoy pairing unexpected pieces together (read more about it in my lace skirt and sweatshirt post). Because I have recently been pulling out my white items of clothing from storage (discussed in my winter transition post), I came upon that same lace skirt. I knew I wanted to wear it in a unique way, so I tried a plaid and lace outfit.

Plaid and White Lace

The outfit came out better than I anticipated. There is just something inherently beautiful about pairing unexpected pieces together. I especially like to pair “soft” with “tough” which is how I came up with my camo and lace post. The same concept works here. A “tough” or masculine plaid shirt is paired with a “soft” or feminine lace skirt.

An added bonus of wearing this skirt in the winter is the ability to stretch out my summer wardrobe. Although this skirt, with its feminine eyelet and scallop detail, is more of a summer skirt, paired with the flannel, it can pass in the winter.

Even though the outfit itself is such a standout, I still couldn’t resist adding another pattern in. Therefore, I wore a leopard print shoe. Then I just pulled it all together with a black shoulder bag. Lastly, for jewelry, I added one of my favorite earrings and some fun rings.

Plaid and Black Lace

Because the above outfit worked out so well, I set out to try it with another lace skirt. I chose a pretty black and taupe lace skirt. This time, I chose a plaid top with many neutral tones in it. The outfit also turned out great.

For the accessories here, I chose not to pattern mix (it does happen once in a while)! Instead I opted for accessories with some fun details and textures. Therefore I chose a pair of booties with fringe and a fun textured clutch.

Furthermore, it gives you more options on mixing your clothing items together. I hope you try a plaid and lace outfit for yourself! Winter Wardrobe Transition

Hello friend! Winter is finally here. Now we don’t have too cold a winter in Los Angeles, but I still like to adjust my clothes for the new season. Let me show you my process for updating my closet and transitioning into my winter wardrobe.

Update Colors of Winter Wardrobe

For my seasonal color palettes, I like to take cues from nature and the occasions of that season. For example, during fall transition, I like to wear warmer colors such as browns and oranges. Then, during December, I center my outfits around holiday colors. For that month, I wore a lot of red, green and gold. Now that we are in Winter, I lean towards a few staple color schemes.

First, I add white back into my wardrobe (stay tuned for winter white posts). During the fall months, I did not wear much white (besides small accent pieces). But now that it is winter, I can add it back in. Because winter is often associated with snow, white makes for a quintessential winter color.

In addition to the white, I adjust the rest of my colors away from the warm shades of fall and towards the cooler and icier tones of winter. For example, I will wear more blues and grays.

Try New Combinations

Winter is the perfect season to experiment with layers! I enjoy layering cool weather clothes such as scarves, vests and sweaters over other pieces in my wardrobe. This makes for fun and new combinations to wear. The key to making this type of look “work” is to choose a unifying color scheme.

For example, pick items that have similar tones so they look like they “go” together even if they are from different seasons. As you can see in the example below, I have paired a spring/summer pleated skirt with a thick turtleneck sweater. Even though the items look like they are from different seasons, the outfit works because the colors are unified. In this example, it is the color gray that brings it all together.

Retire Some Pieces

Finally, I urge you to retire some items of clothing. Whether it’s a permanent retirement to a charity or a temporary retirement to storage, you will see results. Your winter wardrobe will be neater and more accessible.

No matter what, there will be some items you just won’t wear year round (for me that is rompers, shorts and sandals). Instead of letting them occupy valuable space in your closet, pack them away for the season. This accomplishes a working closet (in that everything in it can be worn at that time). It also gives you something to look forward to next season, where you get to bring out those stored pieces. It’s like free shopping!

These three simple updates keep me interested in my wardrobe and help me look fresh each season. Do you have any other tips? Please let me know in the comments!
