Try This: Boho White Dress

Hello friend! While I enjoy putting together fun work appropriate outfits, I also like to try new styles. One trend I’ve been playing with is the bohemian look. Although I can’t get too “boho” at work, I can bring in a boho vibe. The easiest way to do so is by wearing a boho white dress. My dress is from Shop Stevie. It is now sold out, but they have other fantastic bohemian style dresses.

My Take on the Boho White Dress

When I first got this dress, I knew it would be a perfect spring and summer look. Therefore I chose to pair it with my summer booties. I feel that boho is almost synonymous with booties! I love the way it came out. The booties temper the femininity of the dress.

I chose not to wear a necklace because the top of this little boho white dress is so pretty. It has delicate embroidery on the bodice and sleeves. Thus I didn’t want anything to cover it up.

Therefore, I only wore earrings and some bracelets.

Because the outfit was lacking in color and pattern, I chose to bring in a “polished whimsy” element with my choice of purse. Therefore I wore my snow leopard print clutch. I love how the snow leopard is softer than the original leopard spots. It works perfectly with the boho white dress.

All in all, I think this boho white dress outfit came together fairly well. I’m excited about styling it a few different ways, similar to what I did with this dress. Specifically, here are my recommendations (for this or another boho white dress):

Other Ways to Wear a Boho White Dress

  1. Belt with a cool multi-strand or fringe belt.
  2. Pair with wedges and a floppy hat.
  3. Layer with a crochet vest, oh so boho!
  4. Add a casual element with a denim jacket.
  5. Top it with a rich suede jacket.
  6. Accessorize with fringy jewelry and layer it on! Think lots of beaded bracelets and multiple strands of necklaces.
  7. Carry a large unstructured bag, preferably with fringe!

If you already love the boho look, be sure to check out my friend Mandy’s post (boho chic with 4 easy pieces) where she has great ways of achieving it. I’ve also gathered up some pretty boho pieces from this post and beyond below.

Pattern Primer: Rugby Stripe Pattern Mixing

Hello friend! As you know, I adore to pattern mix. In fact, I tend to do so every chance I get! Furthermore, stripes are one of my favorite patterns. Therefore it’s no surprise I wear a lot of stripes. Recently I have been playing a lot with rugby stripes (a thick scale stripe inspired by rugby uniforms). Therefore I want to share how to wear them. Specifically, I want to show how fun (and easy) it is to do rugby stripe pattern mixing.

How to style rugby stripe pattern mixing outfits

Rule for Rugby Stripe Pattern Mixing

The key to making these (and any) pattern mixes work is to pair prints of different scale (see pattern mixing 101 post). Rugby stripes are already fairly bold. So you need your second print to be significantly smaller or larger. I usually opt for a larger second print, but that’s my personal taste. Do what works for you! In case you’re in need of some rugby stripes in your life, I have rounded some up here:

Floral Midi Rugby Stripe Pattern Mixing

For me, stripes and floral print just always go together. Therefore I pair them frequently in my pattern mixes. I’ve done that here once again. Of course I kept my golden rule, by choosing a large scale floral print.

Leopard and Rugby Stripe Pattern Mixing

While I love a good black and white stripe tee, I have long been searching for a perfect tan and white one as well. That’s mainly because I’ve been wanting to wear it with this floral skirt. So when I finally found this one at Madewell, I purchased it right away. The outfit lived up to my expectations. It was worth the wait!

While I have worn this skirt numerous times with black and white pattern mixes, I have always pined to wear it with a tan pattern. I am happy to see that my instinct was correct. It just makes for a softer pattern mix. I love it!

For this outfit, I also chose to try a triple pattern mix by adding in the leopard print clutch. This was an easy decision as I often wear leopard print with this skirt (the colors just call for it!). It works, mainly because I follow my triple pattern mix rules. I also added gold toned jewelry to complete the look.

Floral Pencil Skirt Rugby Stripe Pattern Mixing

Keeping with the floral and rugby stripe pattern mixing combination, I chose to pair the tee with a floral pencil skirt. It’s a tad bolder look than the one above. That’s because it’s not only bold prints, but also bold colors. But you know me: I don’t shy away from either. Therefore I adore this look!

Rugby stripe patter mixing with J Crew floral punk skirt and black and white striped tee shirt Rugby stripe patter mixing with J Crew floral punk skirt and black and white striped tee shirt Rugby stripe patter mixing with J Crew floral punk skirt and black and white striped tee shirt

Although the look is quite bold, I think it is still perfectly suitable for most workplaces. Hence the reason I chose to pair the outfit with simple black pumps, to further reiterate its work appropriateness! But I couldn’t resist adding some more color with the bright earrings (sorry!).

Double Stripe Rugby Stripe Pattern Mixing

At this point I had done plenty of floral prints. Plus I wanted to do another double stripes look (I had done a few on Instagram a while back). Therefore I decided to pair the rugby stripe tee with my skirt du jour: the J Crew pop stripe skirt. The result was a fun and uniform look.

One Item Four Ways: Lu La Roe Cassie

Hello friend! In my last Lu La Roe post, I showed you how I styled the Julia and the leggings. Similarly in this post, I will show you how I style the Lu La Roe Cassie skirt four ways. Like my previous one, this post was also in collaboration with Jamie Denning.

Lu La Roe Cassie and Classic Tee

For my first look, I decided to be basic and simply pair the tee and skirt together. To add a bit of flare, I knotted the skirt. I also added a fun pop of color with my mustard heels.

Lu la roe cassie skirt with classic teeLu la roe cassie skirt with classic tee

Layering the Lu La Roe Cassie

Because I wanted to try a few unique looks with the skirt, I began playing around with the idea of layering it over other clothing pieces. I knew many girls had worn it as a tube top. However, I don’t wear tube tops too often. But that did give me the idea of layering the Cassie over another top! I had initially intended on layering it over a striped button down shirt, but the colors didn’t work out. Instead I layered it over a tee shirt dress.

Lu la roe cassie skirt layered over a striped dress

The results were great. It simply looked like a one piece dress with a patch of color blocking.

Lu la roe cassie skirt layered over a striped dress

Cassie With Another Skirt

Because I enjoyed layering the previous outfit so much, I wanted to keep that trend going. This time I decided to try something I’ve never done before: wear two skirts together! I layered the Cassie over an ivory lace skirt. This works best if the hem of the bottom layer has a pretty detail (lace or scalloped) as this is the only part of the skirt that will show! Alternatively, you can choose a plain fabric but one with a fun color.

Lu La Roe Cassie as a Scarf

My last and most fun styling of the skirt is not as a skirt at all! But rather as a scarf! The Lu La Roe Cassie works as a scarf because of its simple shape. It’s basically a tube, so you just scrunch it up and wear it like an infinity scarf.

Lu la roe cassie skirt worn as a scarf Lu la roe cassie skirt worn as a scarf

It’s safe to say I adore the Lu La Roe Cassie skirt. The fit is superb and the cute is versatile. I will be on the lookout for new prints to pick up! What’s your favorite styling of the Cassie? Also, which item should I pick up next? Furthermore, If you need a Lu La Roe fix, I whole-heartedly recommend working with  Jamie Denning. You can connect with her via her  Facebook group.

Try This: Colorful Coat

Hello friend! Since winter is extending another 6 weeks, we need to hold on to our coats a while longer. If you’re like me and you’re over wearing your neutral outerwear, then you must try a fun colorful coat. My current favorite is this gorgeous green one from Pink Martini Collection. This verdant overcoat will brighten up the coldest and dreariest of days.

polished whimsy in green ruffle coat

I am very excited to partner with Pink Martini Collection because of the beautiful vintage inspired items they offer. If you’re a lover of Anthropologie and Modcloth, you will similarly adore Pink Martini Collection. The have sweet and whimsical pieces, with the perfect feminine touch such as the ruffle detail on the collar of the coat.

Polished whimsy in green colorful coat Polished whimsy in green coat

Another one of the details I love about this coat, is the fun lining: a floral print! I truly appreciate it when a company puts that much thought into the little details. I may be the only person who sees the lining, but it makes me happy to know it’s there! And ultimately, I’m the one wearing it, so that’s all that matters!

Polished whimsy in leopard print skirt and green colorful coat Polished whimsy in leopard print skirt and green colorful coat

I chose to pair the coat with a bold leopard print skirt and a simple black sweater. However, since it is a solid color, it can be worn with many other solids as well as prints. Because of the neutral color of the coat (not too Christmas-y) it can be worn during winter and into spring. Therefore, I find that to be a very versatile layering piece.

For the rest of my outfit, I chose simple black pumps to coordinate with the skirt and top. Finally, for jewelry, I chose a pair of neutral statement earrings.

I hope I have convinced you that adding a colorful coat to your wardrobe is a must. If so, then I encourage you to check out my choice in green or in burgundy. If however you still prefer neutral colors or are in need of a replacement, the coat is also available in gray. My other outfit items are available to shop below:

One Item Four Ways: Leather Leggings II

Hello friend. I am usually not one to repeat a post. However, when an item is this versatile, I must do it. I think it also has to do with the fact that leather leggings are completely new to me, so I am thoroughly obsessed! I’ll give you a moment to review my first leather leggings post. Now let me show you four more ways of wearing them. The leggings are the same pair from Gray Monroe.

Casual Blush and Black

The leggings are a perfect companion for an oversized sweater. This time, I paired it with my new sweater obsession, also from Gray Monroe.

To go with the more casual vibe of the outfit, I wore my new Skechers slip-ons with the look. The blush tone of the shoe complimented the sweater perfectly.

The best part about this shoe is the rose gold stripe in the back, so lovely!

Graphic Tee and Cardi

Another outfit I was excited to try was pairing a long tee with a shorter cardigan. I have a great inspiration photo pinned on my leather leggings Pinterest board if you’d like to check it out. This was what I came up with.

My shirt is from my favorite tee shirt company, Mama Bird and Co. Her tees are the softest and they are long so they cover the booty! I wanted to bring in a print here, so I paired the look with this cheetah print cardigan. As for shoes, I chose a pair of booties with spikes to go with the bada** feel of the shirt and cardigan.

Leather Leggings for Work

Since it’s not always easy to wear them to work, I wanted another office look. I decided to layer with a long vest and a chambray shirt. The result is an office appropriate outfit that I like as much as the last, if not more!

Polished whimsy in leather leggings, chambray shirt, long vest and leopard print clutch Polished whimsy in leather leggings, chambray shirt, long vest and leopard print clutchWhile the look was very professional looking, I had to add a fun print with leopard print clutch.  Besides a watch, the only other accessory is a long pendant necklace.

Boho Leather Leggings

Finally for my last look, I decided to try a casual bohemian look by wearing the leggings with a poncho. The poncho is from Zyania, an online store with affordable and cute accessories (seriously, the items can rival department store pieces)!

Polished whimsy in leather leggings, criss cross top, over the knee boots and poncho Polished whimsy in leather leggings, criss cross top, over the knee boots and poncho

This look came together quite simply with a pair of over the knee boots and a criss-cross top. I love the drape and flow of the poncho as I walk.

Polished whimsy in leather leggings, criss cross top, over the knee boots and poncho Polished whimsy in leather leggings, criss cross top, over the knee boots and poncho

Because there is so much visual interest in the outfit already, I kept my accessories minimal. Therefore I opted for just a pair of statement earrings.

In conclusion, I think it is safe to say that I am loving leather leggings. If you’re loving them as much as I am, let me know!

Try This: Striped Fur Coat

Hello friend! While I have always liked the look of fur (and faux fur) coats, I haven’t truly felt the need for it. First because I live in Southern California, and our winters are fairly mild. Second, because I am petite and I worry that a large coat would drown me. But when I saw this short striped fur coat on Make Me Chic, I thought it would be the perfect one for me.

Polished whimsy in striped fur coat

Edgy Striped Fur Coat

For my first look, I knew I wanted to pair the coat with multiple textures, including distressed denim. Therefore I chose my new and very distressed pair of American Eagle jeans. To add another element of texture, I wore my black lace blouse underneath.

I loved how it turned out. The juxtaposition of the textures is exactly what I wanted.

For my accessories I kept it simple with just a beautiful pair of earrings and my Rebecca Minkoff Love bag. This time I doubled up the chain on the bag to make it more of a shoulder bag than a crossbody. That small change makes such a difference in the bag.

Polished whimsy in striped fur coat with lace top and distressed jeansPolished whimsy in striped fur coat with lace top and distressed jeansPolished whimsy in striped fur coat with lace top and distressed jeans

As for the shoes, I wanted to add some subtle pattern mixing, so I wore my favorite pair of leopard print heels. Because the shoe also has black in it, it helps it to blend in with the outfit while still providing a pop of interest.

Feminine Striped Fur Coat

For my second look, I wanted to pair the striped fur coat with a feminine and flowy skirt. And what better skirt than my new pleated velvet one? An added bonus to this combination is another beautiful play on textures.

Polished whimsy in striped fur coat and pleated velvet skirtPolished whimsy in striped fur coat and pleated velvet skirt

I just love pairing velvet and fur for winter. For shoes I went with my old stand-by silver pumps. They never fail me!

Polished whimsy in striped fur coat and pleated velvet skirtPolished whimsy in striped fur coat and pleated velvet skirtBecause there is so much texture already in the outfit, I wanted to keep the jewelry minimal. Therefore I just wore a pair of mini tassel earrings and a statement ring. And finally, I topped it all off with a small clutch.

Polished whimsy in striped fur coat and pleated velvet skirtPolished whimsy in striped fur coat and pleated velvet skirtPolished whimsy in striped fur coat and pleated velvet skirt

Although it took me a while to start wearing fur coats, I am now head over heels, thanks to this beautiful striped fur coat from Make Me Chic. Therefore, you will likely see me wearing it quite often this winter. Knowing myself, I will try to change up the look each time. So if you have any suggestions, please let me know!

Pattern Primer: Winter Florals

Hello friend! While we expect to wear floral print in spring and summer, we don’t have to leave it all behind in the cooler months. I’ve shown you before how to wear floral prints in the fall. Now, let me show you how to wear winter florals.

Muted Winter Florals

One of the ways I like to wear a floral print in the winter, is to choose a muted color palette. Therefore I forego the bright pinks and reds. Instead I opt for grays, mauves, and winter white. Here I chose a scarf with these beautiful muted shades in a lovely winter florals pattern.

Polished whimsy in winter florals Polished whimsy in winter florals

For another look, I chose more of a neutral color scheme. Here I paired the white and metallic floral tee with a  polka dot skirt. Because the colors are neutral, I decided to play it up with my patterns by adding leopard print shoes.

winter florals and triple pattern mix by polished whimsy triple pattern mix and winter florals by polished whimsy

For accessories, I stuck with the color scheme and went with gray tassel earrings. Because I love pairing pink with gray, I chose to wear my pink purse with this look.

Polished whimsy in winter florals tee and polka dot skirt with baublebar mini falcon drop earrings

Dark Winter Florals

The second way I like to wear winter florals is by opting for dark and rich colors. To differentiate from fall florals, I choose deep plums and blues. Here I have a purple tone floral dress. The colors simply scream winter!

Polished whimsy in winter florals dress with over the knee boots Polished whimsy in winter florals dress with over the knee boots

For the jewelry, I kept with the tones of the dress and chose a gray wrap choker.

Polished whimsy in winter florals dress with over the knee boots

For the last look, I opted for a blue and brown floral print skirt. I paired it with a black criss cross tee.

Polished whimsy in winter florals skirt and criss cross top

For my accessories, I kept the purse and shoes black to further darken the look and hence make it more winter-y! I then echoed the blue in the skirt with my blue druzy stud earrings.

With so many options for winter florals around, I urge you to give it a try! Whether it’s an icy-cool color scheme or a deep blue, wearing prints with winter florals is easy to do. If you need to add some winter florals into your wardrobe, check out the items from this post as well as some of my recommendations below!

Try This: Plaid and Lace

Hello friend! As you know from reading my blog, I enjoy pairing unexpected pieces together (read more about it in my lace skirt and sweatshirt post). Because I have recently been pulling out my white items of clothing from storage (discussed in my winter transition post), I came upon that same lace skirt. I knew I wanted to wear it in a unique way, so I tried a plaid and lace outfit.

polished whimsy in plaid and lace outfit

Plaid and White Lace

The outfit came out better than I anticipated. There is just something inherently beautiful about pairing unexpected pieces together. I especially like to pair “soft” with “tough” which is how I came up with my camo and lace post. The same concept works here. A “tough” or masculine plaid shirt is paired with a “soft” or feminine lace skirt.

polished whimsy in plaid and lace outfit polished whimsy in plaid and lace outfit

An added bonus of wearing this skirt in the winter is the ability to stretch out my summer wardrobe. Although this skirt, with its feminine eyelet and scallop detail, is more of a summer skirt, paired with the flannel, it can pass in the winter.

polished whimsy in plaid and lace outfit

Even though the outfit itself is such a standout, I still couldn’t resist adding another pattern in. Therefore, I wore a leopard print shoe. Then I just pulled it all together with a black shoulder bag. Lastly, for jewelry, I added one of my favorite earrings and some fun rings.

polished whimsy in plaid and lace outfit and baublebar earrings

Plaid and Black Lace

Because the above outfit worked out so well, I set out to try it with another lace skirt. I chose a pretty black and taupe lace skirt. This time, I chose a plaid top with many neutral tones in it. The outfit also turned out great.

Polished whimsy in plaid and lace outfitpolished whimsy in plaid and lace outfit

For the accessories here, I chose not to pattern mix (it does happen once in a while)! Instead I opted for accessories with some fun details and textures. Therefore I chose a pair of booties with fringe and a fun textured clutch.

polished whimsy in plaid and lace outfit polished whimsy in plaid and lace All in all, I think both of these outfits turned out great. Furthermore, it gives you more options on mixing your clothing items together. I hope you try a plaid and lace outfit for yourself! Items from this post (or similar ones) are available for shopping below!

One Item Four Ways: Green Tartan Skirt

Hello friend! By now you all know that I am infatuated with patterns. Recently tartan plaid has claimed my heart. So when I saw this green tartan skirt on StyleWe, I knew I had to have it. Since I received it, I have worn it three times. It is both versatile and flattering. Let me show you by styling it four ways.

Modern Green Tartan Skirt

For the first look, I decided to pair the classic skirt with an on-trend item like this cold shoulder sweater. I chose to keep this look neutral so that the color and print of the skirt are the focus of the outfit.

Polished whimsy in green tartan skirt and grey cold shoulder sweater. Polished whimsy in green tartan skirt and grey cold shoulder sweater.

For accessories I chose my grey Charming Charlie tote. I kept the jewelry minimal, with a statement necklace and a watch.

Polished whimsy in green tartan skirt and grey cold shoulder sweater.

Demure in Green Tartan Skirt

Next I wanted to add in some pops of color. Because of my love for my mustard shoes, I decided mustard would be that color. My new Anthropologie blouse with its mustard bow detail stood out as the perfect top for this outfit.

Polished whimsy in green tartan skirt and anthropologie callum tie neck blousePolished whimsy in green tartan skirt and anthropologie callum tie neck blouse

Because of the pretty bow detail on the neck, I decided to skip a necklace. Instead I opted for a pretty pair of earrings and some bangle bracelets.

Polished whimsy in anthropologie callum blouse and green tartan skirt

Preppy Green Tartan Skirt

Another work appropriate look is this one incorporating a gingham button down shirt with the plaid skirt. Here I also got to play with a color theory I’ve been interested in: pairing adjacent colors on the color wheel. In this instance the adjacent colors are blue and green. An added bonus of course is the pattern mixing that is achieved with these items. You know nothing makes me happier than a pretty pattern mix!

polished whimsy in gingham and tartan plaid outfit

For accessories, I wanted to add in some extra color, thus I wore a pair of red pumps. I also wanted to bring in a third pattern, so I added the leopard print clutch. For earrings, I decided to keep it minimal with my favorite hoops. Lastly, I decided to up the drama by adding a bold tassel necklace.

Polished whimsy pattern mixing in gingham shirt and green tartan skirt Polished whimsy pattern mixing in gingham shirt and green tartan skirt

Tough in Green Tartan Skirt

Finally for my most unique outfit, I chose to pair the skirt with leather and lace. I adore the juxtaposition of the wool against the lace and leather. Furthermore, I love that the outfit feels almost costume-y. It evokes a bit of Victorian times and even more, of 18th century Scotland (or what I know of it from watching Outlander). But to prevent it from being too costume-y, I made sure the cut of the jacket and skirt were modern.

polished whimsy in green tartan skirt with lace top and leather jacketpolished whimsy in green tartan skirt with lace top and leather jacketpolished whimsy in green tartan skirt with lace top and leather jacket

Sticking with my Victorian/Scottish inspiration, I chose a pair of lace-up booties to complete the look. Opting for a high heel also helped to keep the look contemporary. For my jewelry, I chose to pair the outfit with a sparkly tassel earring. This added yet another dimension of texture and interest to the look.

polished whimsy in green tartan skirt with lace top and leather jacket

Needless to say, I found it fun and easy to pair this gorgeous green tartan skirt with multiple items in my closet. But I’d love to hear your opinion. Which look is your favorite? If you’d like to venture out to try this yourself, the skirt is available here. I have also linked the other items from the post directly below.

Color Crush: Mustard and Burgundy

Hello friend! As we near the end of fall, I would like one last homage to my favorite color of the season: burgundy.  I adored pairing burgundy and blush as well as burgundy and pink. And let’s not forget baby blue and burgundy. Needless to say, I think burgundy pairs well with many other colors. So today, let me introduce you to one last pairing: mustard and burgundy.

x

Mustard and Burgundy for Work

For a simple work outfit, pair a mustard plaid (or other print) with a burgundy skirt. The vibrant colors complement each other perfectly. Because I adore pattern mixing, I chose to add leopard print pumps. However, if that is too much for you, simply pair it with a cognac shoe instead.

Polished whimsy in mustard and burgundy

For my accessories, I decided to wear an eye-catching necklace with the Araksi from Baublebar. I also doubled up on the burgundy by wearing a burgundy leather strap watch.

Polished whimsy in mustard and burgundy outfit and baublebar araksi necklace

A second work outfit is with this multi color striped top. Because the shirt has both mustard and burgundy in it, I decided to make that the focus of my color palette.

Polished whimsy in mustard and burgundy

Once again I brought in some leopard print because I enjoy mixing prints, but of course that is completely optional. In this outfit, I am also wearing some of the same pieces of jewelry as the last outfit. However, I’ve changed it up a bit in the styling. I am wearing the necklace backwards so that it is a simple circular  strand of crystal goodness right at the neckline. Don’t you just love versatile pieces like this?

Polished whimsy in mustard and burgundy and baublebar araksi necklace

Casual Mustard and Burgundy

For a casual look, simply pair a burgundy top with a mustard colorway scarf. Here I am wearing a mustard plaid blanket scarf. I paired it all with neutral grey jeans and black over the knee boots.

Polished whimsy in mustard and burgundy

Dressy Mustard and Burgundy

To achieve a more dressy look, I chose one of my all time favorite Anthropologie skirts. It is long since sold out, so I’m sorry for making you fall in love with it. But she really is a beauty! Ironically, the skirt has a burgundy underlay and a mustard waist line. It’s as if it was meant for this post! For this look, I paired the skirt with a burgundy cardigan and my favorite mustard heels.

Polished whimsy in mustard and burgundy

For my accessories, I added my Baublebar twisted pearl necklace and a statement belt.

Mustard and Burgundy Accessories

The color fun doesn’t have to stop with your clothes. You can also bring in the mustard and burgundy into your accessories. It’s not only a fun way to break up your routine of neutral accessories, but also a creative way of bringing in color into your outfit.

Polished whimsy in mustard and burgundy Polished whimsy in mustard and burgundy

As the fall season comes to an end, make it a point to celebrate the season of color by pairing your mustard and burgundy pieces together.
