Try This: J Crew Colorblock Eyelet Peplum Sweater

Hello friend! With fall here, I am starting to transition my closet. To better understand how I do so, read my fall transition post. As discussed in that post, because I live in Los Angeles, we stay warm for a bit longer than other parts of the world. Therefore, I thought that the J Crew colorblock eyelet peplum sweater would be the ideal transition piece.

J Crew Colorblock Eyelet Peplum Sweater: Review

I initially purchased this sweater on a whim during a late night online purchase (if you watch my insta stories, you know I am a midnight shopper!). When I received the J Crew colorblock eyelet peplum sweater I knew it would be a good transition piece. The pretty eyelet is reminiscent of summer, while the sweater back gives a nod to fall.

The fit of the J Crew colorblock eyelet peplum sweater is true to size. I purchased my usual XS. The peplum starts at a good spot, not too high and not too low. It also ends at a descent length (right at my hip bone). Thus it can be worn comfortably with any type of rise on the bottoms without risking showing off any unintended patches of skin.

J Crew Colorblock Eyelet Peplum Sweater: Casual Styling

As I had imagined during my midnight shopping spree, the J Crew colorblock eyelet peplum sweater is quite easy to style. I started with a casual summer look. Thus, I had to pair it with my denim shorts. They needed one last hurrah! It turned into a very cute and casual styling.

J Crew Colorblock Eyelet Peplum Sweater: Office Styling

To prove that the J Crew colorblock eyelet peplum sweater is versatile enough to stay in my wardrobe, I decided to style it for a work outfit. I easily paired it with a pencil skirt. I think a peplum top always goes well with a pencil skirt. It is just a lovely feminine look.

Of course I had to add some print into the mix. At first I was a tad nervous to do so. I wasn’t sure if it would be too much with the multiple textures in the J Crew colorblock eyelet peplum sweater. But because the colors of the print were neutral, the leopard print skirt paired well with the top.

For shoes I went with classic nude pumps. I also added my fall sunglasses. I had been looking for a brown pair of sunglasses that weren’t boring. These ones with their metallic finish are just what I wanted.

I was concerned about accessorizing with the J Crew colorblock eyelet peplum sweater. Because of the textures in the top and the ribbing at the collar, I didn’t want to add a necklace that would overshadow the top. I therefore went with a dainty yet statement making pendant necklace.

After these initial pairings of the J Crew colorblock eyelet peplum sweater, I am quite happy with my purchase. It will be a good item to wear during fall transition and beyond! How would you style the J Crew colorblock eyelet peplum sweater?

Skirt Code: Why I Prefer to Wear Skirts, Reason 5

Hello friend! It’s time to visit another Skirt Code post! If you missed the other reasons, check them out here: reason 1, reason 2, reason 3, reason 4. The fifth reason why I prefer to wear skirts is that they are more sanitary. This post will surely out me as a germ-a-phobe, but I am OK with that. I have long come to terms with who I am! I will be demonstrating my point with the lovely J Crew rainbow gingham tie front skirt.

j crew rainbow gingham tie front skirt review and why I wear skirts to work

As I’ve said before, I wasn’t always a devout skirt wearer. In fact, when I first started to work, I probably wore pants most of the time. I’ve always had a love of skirts, especially the ones at Anthropologie. But I still wore pants to work for most of the week, mostly just because of habit.

Then came the fated day. I will spare you the details, but when I went to use the restroom, I walked into the stall without realizing I was stepping into someone’s bodily fluids. Because I was wearing long trousers that draped over my shoes, the hem of the pants was touching the ground and said fluid. Gross, I know! Needless to say I was thoroughly disgusted. I think I even threw those pants away!

After that day, I started to wear more skirts. The more I thought about it, the more I was bothered by bringing home clothes that had swept the floor of the hospital (my work), public restrooms, and so on. Because unlike shoes, I keep my clothes on when I snuggle with my daughter on our beds. I just didn’t want to bring those germs into our homes and beds. Wearing a skirt can decrease the chances of that occurring.

This is also the reason why I do not wear maxi skirts or dresses to work. The maxi-mum (pun intended) length that I will do is a mid calf. That still leaves plenty of room between the hem and the floor.

J Crew Rainbow Gingham Tie Front  Skirt Review

Now you know one of my quirks! Let’s switch gears and talk about the skirt in detail. The J crew rainbow gingham tie front skirt is a lovely specimen of a skirt. The colors are vibrant and fun. The fit is perfect. I chose a petite this time as I noticed this was a bit of a longer skirt and I wanted it to hit right at the knee. I got the 2P and it fits great (for reference I am usually a 0 in J Crew).

J Crew Rainbow Gingham Tie Front  Skirt Styling

When I first tried to style the J Crew rainbow gingham tie front skirt, I was a bit stumped. I felt it already had a lot of color and print in it, so I was leaning towards a solid top. But I still wanted some interest. Therefore I went with a lace tee. This ensured there was no competition in color or pattern. But the textured top added another element of style.

As you already know, I love pairing my skirts with chambray. While the J Crew rainbow gingham tie front skirt would also look great with a chambray top (like this one), I chose to mix it up for this look. Therefore I added the chambray element in my jacket instead.

For jewelry I went with rose gold accents including my chain link tassel pendant from Baublebar.

While this may be an unexpected reason to wear skirts, it is still one of my reasons. It is definitely not my most compelling reason, but it was one that spurred my desire to mostly wear skirts to work. Whatever the reason, I encourage you to wear skirts more, especially to work. Plus with some as amazing as the J Crew rainbow gingham tie front skirt, why wouldn’t you wear skirts daily?

1 Item 4 Ways: Paper-bag waist skirt

Hello friend! Because I loved the Banana Republic paper-bag waist skirt so much, I decided to make multiple outfits with it. I knew it would be fairly easy because the cut and color of the skirt are both classic.

Paper-Bag Waist Skirt with Shades of Blue

In my first paper-bag waist skirt post, I wore the skirt with a sleeveless navy sweater. Because the outfit consists of neutral colors and conservative cut, it makes this a perfect option for most offices.

For a marked different look, I decided to style the skirt for an evening out. I paired it with a black crop top and high heeled booties for an edgy look.

I love the juxtaposition of the crisp and proper pencil skirt against the skimpy and sexy crop top. For jewelry, I chose rose gold tones, including these big flirty hoops.

Colorful Paper-Bag Waist Skirt

Because I love color so much, I had a deep need to add some color to the skirt. Therefore I brought in my most colorful top, the mixed gingham shell.

The multiple colors of the top allow for numerous options in accessories. I chose to go with classic red pumps.

For my bag, I changed it up and paired it with pink. As you know from my pink and red post, I adore this color pairing.

Sleek Paper-Bag Waist Skirt

In my last paper-bag waist skirt post, I had mentioned pairing the skirt with a bodysuit. Luckily I was able to purchase the perfect bodysuit for this skirt.

I love how streamlined the look is with a bodysuit. It’s a look that will be perfect for multiple occasions. To add some print and texture, I wore my Vionic snakeskin booties. The add a fun touch to the outfit.

It’s fairly obvious to say I am loving my paper-bag waist skirt. It is very versatile, as I hope I have proven. What’s your favorite look? Let me know in the comments.

Pattern Primer: Watermelon Print Shirt

Hello friend! As I continue on my summer pattern series, I’d like to pay tribute to the summer fruit known as the watermelon. Besides being a sweet, cooling treat, it also makes for a fun summer print. Case in point is my fun watermelon print shirt. Let me show you two ways to wear it.

Watermelon Print Shirt for Play

Wearing a watermelon print shirt for casual days is quite simple. You can pair it with jeans or shorts and you are set! Because of that reason, I wanted to push myself a bit more in the casual outfit. Therefore I chose to pair it with a denim skirt and booties.

The look is casual but polished. For accessories I chose gold tone jewelry to go with the belt.

Watermelon Print Shirt for Work

Because some think wearing a watermelon print shirt to the office can be unprofessional, I sought to prove them wrong! Here I paired the shirt with a sharp pencil skirt. The look is professional, and perfectly office appropriate!

When I was choosing the skirt for this outfit, I decided to play off the colors of a watermelon. Therefore I chose a few shades of green. Although my initial pairing was a true watermelon rind color, it felt too costumey. Instead, I went with this bright chartreuse. While it is still green, it’s not quite so literal. Furthermore, it pairs so well with the pops of red in the watermelon print shirt and shoes.

For accessorizing this look, I chose to stick with gold and white tones. A white watch is just perfect in the summertime. I chose to pair it with my gold double hoop earrings and statement necklace. To finish off the look, I topped it all off with my gold clutch.

I hope I have succeeded in proving that a watermelon print shirt can be worn to the office. Besides the watermelon print shirt post, I also have a palm tree print and pineapple print post. Plus I am working on some others. If there is a summer print you’d like to see, please let me know in the comments!

Pattern Primer: Red Stripes and Leopard Print

Hello friend! Ever since my first red stripes and leopard print post, I have been obsessed with this combination. I have even purchased a few more red striped items, particularly summer pieces. Therefore I want to show you more examples of red stripes and leopard print outfits. This time around however, I am focusing on just the red stripes and leopard print, without also requiring denim and tan.

How to wear red stripes and leopard print pattern mixing outfit

Ruffled Red Stripes and Leopard Print

A bold way to wear red stripes and leopard print is to bring in large elements of each print. For example, in this outfit, I am wearing a red striped top with a leopard print skirt. Although both items are standout and bold, they still go together. That’s because the stripes are thin and wide, while the leopard print is smaller and more dense. See my pattern mixing 101 post for more information.

I love the way this outfit turned out. I wore it to a conference last May. To make it more work appropriate, I had simply topped it with a cardigan. Then when happy hour time came, I took off the cardi and I was ready!

Office Red Stripes and Leopard Print

An understated way to wear red stripes and leopard print to work is to keep one of the prints limited to a small item of clothing. For example in this look, I chose to wear the leopard print in a belt. Now the contrast is not as large as in the first look. It’s almost demure!

I paired the two prints with a ruffled chambray top. Chambray pairs well with everything. It is always a go-to for me when I am pattern mixing or styling a new item.

Casual Red Stripes and Leopard Print

Because my original inspiration was with denim, I decided to do an outfit with the summer equivalent of jeans: cut-off shorts. I paired it with my off the shoulder ruffle top and a leopard print scarf and I am set!

When I was putting this outfit together, I didn’t have a leopard print scarf in the size that I wanted. I searched high and low and still could not find one. Then I had an A-ha moment!

I simply went to the fabric store and picked out a good leopard print fabric. Then I took that fabric along with a square scarf I already owned to my tailor. She used my own scarf as a template and quickly whipped a similar one out of the leopard print fabric. Now I had the perfect size leopard print scarf. And it was so cost effective! Try that next time you can’t find the exact size scarf you want.

Flirty Red Stripes and Leopard Print

Another summer mainstay item is the denim skirt. For that reason, I’ve been wearing my skirt often this season. Therefore I had to create another outfit with the skirt. I chose to pair it with a long-sleeve off the shoulder top because I wanted some more coverage with so much of my legs showing. Furthermore, this would be a good look for the beach where it could get chilly.

This time around, I moved the leopard print to my feet by wearing my leopard print Gigi sandals. It’s another subtle way to bring in the leopard print.

As you can see, it is truly so easy to pair red stripes and leopard print together. I hope you give it a try yourself! If you enjoyed this post, please share the link on your Facebook!

Current Obsession: Banana Republic Paperbag Waist Lace Inset Skirt

Hello friend! When I first laid my eyes upon this skirt, I knew I had to have it. One, because I had been looking for a neutral khaki skirt. Two, because I love the lace inset detail. Three, because the paperbag waist is a spring/summer trend that I have yet to try. And four, the most important reason, because it fit me so well! Therefore the Banana Republic Paperbag Waist Lace Inset Skirt had to come home with me!

Because I had been looking for a khaki skirt for such a long time, I had to wear the Banana Republic paperbag waist lace inset skirt right away. I wanted to make it a work look, so I paired it with an office-friendly navy shell.

I loved how the Banana Republic paperbag waist lace inset skirt fits and looks. Wearing a paperbag waist can be a bit tough though, so here are my tips:

  1. Wear it with a tucked in top. This tip is key! If you want to have a streamlined look, make sure the top is not loose and billowy. The top I chose is a knit, which tends to cling to the body, thus making it ideal for this skirt.
  2. Consider a crop top. Obviously this would NOT be for work. But if you’d like to take the Banana Republic paperbag waist lace inset skirt out on the town, pair it with a cute crop top. To keep the details of the skirt’s waist the focus, make sure that the top ends about an inch above the skirt. That way, the cute paper bag effect is not concealed.
  3. Bust out a bodysuit. Yes the bodysuit is perfect for the Banana Republic paperbag waist lace inset skirt. It keeps the top perfectly smooth and tucked in. In fact, I am going to hunt one down. If you have a good one, let me know!

Since this is a summer look, I chose to wear my white pumps. I think they are summer essentials! Plus I think navy, khaki and white make for a fresh summer work look.

To stay with the color palette, I decided to wear gold and white jewelry.

Overall I am very pleased with the Banana Republic paperbag waist lace inset skirt. I plan on wearing it with many brights all summer long. My next combination will be with some bright yellow. Stay tuned on my Instagram to catch it!

Inspiration to Execution: Plaid on Plaid

Hello friend!

As you may know, I am a big fan of J. Crew. I adore their gorgeous prints and saturated colors. Most of all, I am constantly inspired by their penchant to mix prints. I take a lot of my outfit inspirations from them. This plaid on plaid outfit in one of their catalogs caught my eye and stole my heart.

J Crew mad hatter ad plaid shirt with gingham skirt and cherry print clutch

It features the cotton midi skirt in oversized gingham paired with a plaid shirt. Now I would have loved to go out and buy this entire outfit. However, budgetary confinements prevented me. More importantly, I felt I could make a similar look with items I already owned. So I turned to my closet. I quickly found a large gingham skirt from Boden in navy check. Then it was on to my plaid shirts. I didn’t have a summery one that matched the skirt. But I did find a more substantial flannel shirt from Old Navy. Since Autumn is technically here (although it is still quite warm), I made my version more of a fall appropriate look than the ad.

plaid old navy shirt with gingham skirt and red heels

The ad snuck in a third print in the form of a clutch. I did similarly with my leopard belt. Given that my outfit was a fall look, I did not think fruit prints would work. But leopard print never fails!

plaid on plaid with leopard

I chose red pumps to echo the mix of red in the plaid shirt.

plaid on plaid with leopard and red pumpsFor accessories I chose a classic twist of pearls. I love the look of feminine pearls against a masculine plaid print. I added some fun rings and rounded off the look with a couple of leopard cuffs from Charming Charlie.

And that is how I came up with my plaid on plaid outfit. It may not be an exact replica of the J. Crew ad, but it has the same feel of it. I hope that you can take inspirations such as this and make it work with the items you already own. Let me know what has inspired you and how you translated that inspiration into your own outfit.
