Skirt Code: Why I Prefer to Wear Skirts, Reason 5

Hello friend! It’s time to visit another Skirt Code post! If you missed the other reasons, check them out here: reason 1, reason 2, reason 3, reason 4. The fifth reason why I prefer to wear skirts is that they are more sanitary. This post will surely out me as a germ-a-phobe, but I am OK with that. I have long come to terms with who I am! I will be demonstrating my point with the lovely J Crew rainbow gingham tie front skirt.

As I’ve said before, I wasn’t always a devout skirt wearer. In fact, when I first started to work, I probably wore pants most of the time. I’ve always had a love of skirts, especially the ones at Anthropologie. But I still wore pants to work for most of the week, mostly just because of habit.

Then came the fated day. I will spare you the details, but when I went to use the restroom, I walked into the stall without realizing I was stepping into someone’s bodily fluids. Because I was wearing long trousers that draped over my shoes, the hem of the pants was touching the ground and said fluid. Gross, I know! Needless to say I was thoroughly disgusted. I think I even threw those pants away!

After that day, I started to wear more skirts. The more I thought about it, the more I was bothered by bringing home clothes that had swept the floor of the hospital (my work), public restrooms, and so on. Because unlike shoes, I keep my clothes on when I snuggle with my daughter on our beds. I just didn’t want to bring those germs into our homes and beds. Wearing a skirt can decrease the chances of that occurring.

This is also the reason why I do not wear maxi skirts or dresses to work. The maxi-mum (pun intended) length that I will do is a mid calf. That still leaves plenty of room between the hem and the floor.

J Crew Rainbow Gingham Tie Front  Skirt Review

Now you know one of my quirks! Let’s switch gears and talk about the skirt in detail. The J crew rainbow gingham tie front skirt is a lovely specimen of a skirt. The colors are vibrant and fun. The fit is perfect. I chose a petite this time as I noticed this was a bit of a longer skirt and I wanted it to hit right at the knee. I got the 2P and it fits great (for reference I am usually a 0 in J Crew).

J Crew Rainbow Gingham Tie Front  Skirt Styling

When I first tried to style the J Crew rainbow gingham tie front skirt, I was a bit stumped. I felt it already had a lot of color and print in it, so I was leaning towards a solid top. But I still wanted some interest. Therefore I went with a lace tee. This ensured there was no competition in color or pattern. But the textured top added another element of style.

As you already know, I love pairing my skirts with chambray. While the J Crew rainbow gingham tie front skirt would also look great with a chambray top (like this one), I chose to mix it up for this look. Therefore I added the chambray element in my jacket instead.

For jewelry I went with rose gold accents including my chain link tassel pendant from Baublebar.

While this may be an unexpected reason to wear skirts, it is still one of my reasons. It is definitely not my most compelling reason, but it was one that spurred my desire to mostly wear skirts to work. Whatever the reason, I encourage you to wear skirts more, especially to work. Plus with some as amazing as the J Crew rainbow gingham tie front skirt, why wouldn’t you wear skirts daily?

1 Item 4 Ways: Paper-bag waist skirt

Hello friend! Because I loved the Banana Republic paper-bag waist skirt so much, I decided to make multiple outfits with it. I knew it would be fairly easy because the cut and color of the skirt are both classic.

Paper-Bag Waist Skirt with Shades of Blue

In my first paper-bag waist skirt post, I wore the skirt with a sleeveless navy sweater. Because the outfit consists of neutral colors and conservative cut, it makes this a perfect option for most offices.

For a marked different look, I decided to style the skirt for an evening out. I paired it with a black crop top and high heeled booties for an edgy look.

I love the juxtaposition of the crisp and proper pencil skirt against the skimpy and sexy crop top. For jewelry, I chose rose gold tones, including these big flirty hoops.

Colorful Paper-Bag Waist Skirt

Because I love color so much, I had a deep need to add some color to the skirt. Therefore I brought in my most colorful top, the mixed gingham shell.

The multiple colors of the top allow for numerous options in accessories. I chose to go with classic red pumps.

For my bag, I changed it up and paired it with pink. As you know from my pink and red post, I adore this color pairing.

Sleek Paper-Bag Waist Skirt

In my last paper-bag waist skirt post, I had mentioned pairing the skirt with a bodysuit. Luckily I was able to purchase the perfect bodysuit for this skirt.

I love how streamlined the look is with a bodysuit. It’s a look that will be perfect for multiple occasions. To add some print and texture, I wore my Vionic snakeskin booties. The add a fun touch to the outfit.

For my accessories, I chose a fun tassel necklace. I love how a necklace looks against a mock turtleneck.

Color Crush: Pink and Orange Outfit

Hello friend! I am so excited to finally bring you this color combination. That’s because I have been sitting on the idea for a long time. And now I have the perfect pieces to demonstrate this gorgeous color palette to you! Without further ado, let’s discuss the brilliant color combination of a pink and orange outfit.

How to wear a pink and orange outfit

Does a Pink and Orange Outfit Really Work?

Those of you who follow my color crush series know that I like to read about color theory. So of course I did the same for this color combination. I was happy to see that a pink and orange outfit abides by color theory combination.

This is an example of an analogous color combination. Therefore it works (or is pleasing to the eye) because the colors fall next to each other on the color wheel. In reality, red and orange fall next to each other. But because pink is just a tint of red, the theory still holds. Furthermore, the little yellow flowers adds a third analogous color, resulting in an overall harmonious color scheme.

So after color theory gave the green light for my look, I was hungry to style a pink and orange outfit.  After seeing this top on Debbie Matenopoulos on TV, I tracked one down on matchesfasion.com. I loved the saturated shade of pink and the pretty embroidered flowers. I knew it would be a perfect candidate for the outfit I was dreaming up in my head.

My Pink and Orange Outfit

After weeks of planning and tracking down, I finally got the chance to wear my own pink and orange outfit. Needless to say, I was not disappointed! As predicted by color theory, the colors are harmonious.

I had initially paired nude shoes with the outfit, but they just didn’t pop. So I decided to be bold and wear pink pumps instead. While I was worried it would be pink overkill, I think it actually turned out great! The pink simply sandwiched the orange!

For my purse, I chose to keep it neutral, but added another texture with my gold clutch.

Lastly for my jewelry, I chose to wear only earrings. A necklace would just detract from the intricate embroidery of the top. I also wore some fun bracelets, including my newly re-acquired renegade bracelet. The gold tones work perfectly with my pink and orange outfit.

After I got dressed, I was faced with a small dilemma. What color makeup to wear? With so many colors in the outfit, I didn’t want to clash. The safe path would have been to wear neutrals. However, I was wearing this outfit to a special occasion, so I wanted some fun makeup. Also, I’m not one to opt for the safe path (when it comes to fashion and beauty anyways!). Therefore I chose to wear a pretty orange duochrome eye shadow on my lids and bright pink lips! I also added a pretty glow with my favorite highlighter.

Pattern Primer: Pineapple A-line Skirt

Hello friend! With summer in full swing, I want to do a mini-series on fun summer patterns. Well nothing tops that list more than pineapples. Over the last two years, pineapples have really taken a hold of the summer trends. This year is of no exception with the release of the J Crew Ratti painted pineapple a line skirt.

Chambray and J Crew Ratti Painted Pineapple A Line Skirt

When I purchase a skirt, I almost inevitably pair it first with a chambray top. I think it always produces a crisp and refined look. Therefore I immediately paired the J Crew Ratti painted pineapple a line skirt with some chambray. For the summer months, I gravitate towards this sleeveless chambray top. While in the winter, I will opt for this one or that one! But truly, all three make for perfect ensembles.

My style trick did not fail, the outfit looks great. Of course I played up the fun factor with my bright pink sandals.

I also added some more pink with my clutch. Because they are different shades, I think it adds some dimension to the outfit. The rattan also echos the summer feel of the J Crew Ratti painted pineapple a line skirt!

As for accessories I kept it simple with a gold watch but added a touch of whimsy with my earrings. I chose to wear a pineapple pair to further reinforce the fun trend!

Polka Dots and J Crew Ratti Painted Pineapple A Line Skirt

Now I’m sure no one is surprised that I wanted to pattern mix with this skirt. However, I do recommend exercising some caution with this mix. The pineapple print is quite bold. Therefore I would choose a smaller print to wear with the skirt. My first thought was a dainty polka dot. As I had hypothesized, the polka dots matched the J Crew Ratti painted pineapple a line skirt perfectly.

Stripes and J Crew Ratti Painted Pineapple A Line Skirt

Because I liked the pattern mix above so much, I decided to try it with stripes. The same rule applies: choose a small scale stripe! I had a blue striped tee, but a green one would also work. Or try a pink one for a more monochromatic look!

Since I was going for a more casual look, with a t shirt, I decided to wear studded strappy flat sandals. I think a cute graphic tee with blues, greens or pinks would also be a cute look (I’ll link some below)! I couldn’t be happier with the combination!

Trendy Slides and J Crew Ratti Painted Pineapple A Line Skirt

Another way to do a stripes and pineapple pattern mix is to wear striped shoes. I thought it would be great to bring in another trend, the slide sandals. The color and thin scale of the stripes work perfectly with the J Crew Ratti painted pineapple a line skirt. The overall effect is the same as above, but on a smaller scale. So if you’re not comfortable yet wearing a full on pattern mix outfit, try this instead. To get more pattern mixing guidance, check out my pattern mix 101 post.

It’s obvious I am adoring my J Crew Ratti painted pineapple a line skirt. There are so many ways to wear it. However, if you prefer another pineapple print, there are tons to choose from. I am linking my favorites below. Let me know how you are wearing your pineapple print items!
