Try This: Boho White Dress

Hello friend! While I enjoy putting together fun work appropriate outfits, I also like to try new styles. One trend I’ve been playing with is the bohemian look. Although I can’t get too “boho” at work, I can bring in a boho vibe. The easiest way to do so is by wearing a boho white dress. My dress is from Shop Stevie. It is now sold out, but they have other fantastic bohemian style dresses.

My Take on the Boho White Dress

When I first got this dress, I knew it would be a perfect spring and summer look. Therefore I chose to pair it with my summer booties. I feel that boho is almost synonymous with booties! I love the way it came out. The booties temper the femininity of the dress.

I chose not to wear a necklace because the top of this little boho white dress is so pretty. It has delicate embroidery on the bodice and sleeves. Thus I didn’t want anything to cover it up.

Therefore, I only wore earrings and some bracelets.

Because the outfit was lacking in color and pattern, I chose to bring in a “polished whimsy” element with my choice of purse. Therefore I wore my snow leopard print clutch. I love how the snow leopard is softer than the original leopard spots. It works perfectly with the boho white dress.

All in all, I think this boho white dress outfit came together fairly well. I’m excited about styling it a few different ways, similar to what I did with this dress. Specifically, here are my recommendations (for this or another boho white dress):

Other Ways to Wear a Boho White Dress

  1. Belt with a cool multi-strand or fringe belt.
  2. Pair with wedges and a floppy hat.
  3. Layer with a crochet vest, oh so boho!
  4. Add a casual element with a denim jacket.
  5. Top it with a rich suede jacket.
  6. Accessorize with fringy jewelry and layer it on! Think lots of beaded bracelets and multiple strands of necklaces.
  7. Carry a large unstructured bag, preferably with fringe!

If you already love the boho look, be sure to check out my friend Mandy’s post (boho chic with 4 easy pieces) where she has great ways of achieving it. I’ve also gathered up some pretty boho pieces from this post and beyond below.

Try This: Spring Leather Jacket

Hello friend! During my spring wardrobe transition, I put away a lot of my winter items. However, there were a few things I kept. Specifically, my leather jackets. Although they are inherently a cool weather item, I think leather jackets can also be a perfect transition piece. Let me show you how to update your look with a spring leather jacket.

Styling leather jackets for spring work outfits. From pattern mixing with midi skirts to sharp pencil skirts.

How to Make Your Jacket Spring Ready:

  1. Wear your leather jacket with lighter pieces. With the chill of winter behind us, we can forego the sweaters and scarves. Instead, we can now pair our leather jackets with airy and feminine fabrics. So go ahead and throw it on over your pretty eyelet blouse or frilly off the shoulder top. The juxtaposition will be lovely, trust me!
  2. Along the lines of the above reason, also pair your jacket with shorter hems. Shorter hemlines, be it skirts or shorts, will automatically push the outfit into a warm weather look.
  3. Change out your jacket for a spring color. If you are on the market for a new jacket, consider a pretty color for your spring leather jacket! I’ve seen some gorgeous ones in pinks, blues and lavender!

Preppy Cool Spring Leather Jacket

In case you thought the spring leather jacket was only for the weekend, I made sure to style a work appropriate look.

Therefore for my first outfit, I chose to pair this blush pink spring leather jacket with a seersucker striped pencil skirt, this year’s version here. The outfit is perfectly ready for work, but with a punch of personality.

To play up the cool factor, I added a bold bib necklace and fun metallic sunglasses.

Playful and Colorful Spring Leather Jacket

For a more colorful outfit with a spring leather jacket, try what I’ve done here. This time I went bold, opting to repeat a favorite color combination: light blue and red. Hey, if it ain’t broke, why fix it, right?

Baby blue and red color combination with a spring leather jacket and pleated skirt. Stripes and floral print for a pattern mixing outfit. Baby blue and red color combination with a spring leather jacket and pleated skirt. Stripes and floral print for a pattern mixing outfit.

The light blue leather jacket is a quick way to update your wardrobe. It not only adds color, but also adds a different texture and even some attitude to the outfit. The outfit without the jacket is a sweet look with a tee and pleated skirt. But add the jacket and you’ve got a lot more going on. The leather and styling of the jacket brings a “toughness” and “coolness” to the look, both of which I can use once in a while!

Of course I had to stay true to myself and bring in some pattern mixing. Therefore I opted to wear the pieces with a striped tee and my favorite floral heels.

And finally for accessories, I chose to add a fun pair of earrings and a few statement rings. Pops of red on the lips and tips completes this fun and colorful spring leather outfit!

With the two foolproof examples I’ve shown here, you too should try a spring leather jacket! Let me know how you plan to wear yours!

Try This: Graphic Tee

Hello friend! Hot off the heels of my spring trends post, I’d like to feature my favorite new trend: the graphic tee. Now I’ve worn graphic tees many times before, but I recently got a new tee from Mama Bird & Co. Because I wanted fresh ways to style it, I came up with these three new looks. Therefore I had to share them with you.

Fashion blogger polished whimsy styles a graphic tee three ways with elements of leather and leopard print

What’s even more special about this post is that the core elements of this look are all the same. I have incorporated leather, the tee and leopard print. However, each look has these elements mixed up to give you multiple options to wear it. I like to do this to show you how to make inspirations work for you. Instead of feeling the need to purchase every piece of a look, mix up the elements with what you’ve got and make it your own!

Pleated and Graphic

For this first look, I paired the tee with a pleated leather skirt, heels and a tweed jacket. This results in a fun, work appropriate look (if your tee doesn’t have a four letter word that is!).

For my jewelry, I kept the neckline bare so the graphic tee was the focus. I therefore just wore a pretty pair of jeweled studs.

Casual Graphic Tee and Leggings

For I cool mom-on-the-go look, I paired the tee with leather leggings (from Gray Monroe) and a leopard print cardigan. While the elements of the look are basically the same, switching them around results in a significantly different outfit. To further highlight the casual look, I wore a fun pair of flat booties.

Graphic Tee Out on the Town

Who says tee shirts just have to be for daytime? I say dress them up and take them out on the town! Therefore for my final look, I am doing just that!

Fashion blogger polished whimsy styling a graphic tee for a night out with a leather pencil skirt, leopard print fur coat and sexy heels Fashion blogger polished whimsy styling a graphic tee for a night out with a leather pencil skirt, leopard print fur coat and sexy heels

This time I am wearing a pencil cut leather skirt. I also changed the leopard print item to a bold and glamorous fur coat. Add a pair of fierce heels and statement earrings, and you’re ready for the night!

In conclusion, a graphic tee can truly be worn almost anywhere! I hope you try one this season. Let me know your favorite look and stay tuned to Instagram for a fun giveaway! If you’re still on the hunt for the perfect graphic tee, check out Mama Bird & Co for many fun options.

Try This (or That): Valentine’s Day Outfit

Hello friend! Valentine’s Day is almost here and I wanted to give you some outfit options. Now whether you want to dress girly and traditionally to celebrate the day of love, or go opposite and be anti-Valentine, I’ve got you covered. I have a Valentine’s Day outfit option for either end of the spectrum.

Feminine Valentine’s Day Outfit

For my traditional Valentine’s Day outfit, I decided to be predictable and wear shades of pink. However, I still had to bring in a dose of whimsy, so I chose a bold buffalo check top. To tone down the brightness of the shirt, I paired it with a blush tulle skirt.

When I was first looking for this shirt, all of the sales associates kept remarking on how bright it was. Please, a little bright never scared me away! I love how eye catching and unique it is. Polished whimsy's traditional valentine's day outfit

However because the shirt is truly bright, I did keep the rest of my accessories neutral. Thus, I chose a pair of nude pumps. Keeping with the neutral tones, I also added a beige clutch. And finally for the jewelry, I kept it all uniform in tones of rose gold.

Anti-Valentine’s Day Outfit

For my second outfit, I chose to go the opposite route from the first look. Therefore, I turned to distressed denim and racy black.

Polished Whimsy's anti-Valentine's Day look with velvet lace and distressed denim

I immediately reached for my lace velvet top from H&M. It can be worn modestly with a tank (as I have done here) or very racy with just a bra! Unfortunately the photos do not do this top justice. Close up you can see the rich details of the velvet.

Polished whimsy's Valentine's Day OutfitValentine's Day Outfit

I also turned to my favorite distressed jeans from American Eagle.  I like this pair especially because they are high-waisted. Therefore it covers the butt and the tummy, making it an ideal pair of jeans for me. The rips and fraying are a far cry from the typical Valentine’s Day outfit, but a fun and contrary look.

Valentine's Day Outfit

To add some sparkle to the outfit, I chose my favorite glittery clutch and some killer heels. These shoes have it all: leopard print, pop of red and spikes. Now it that’s not love, I don’t know what is!

Which one of these two looks are you leaning towards? Maybe it’s finally the year to shake off the sweet girl look and opt for a sexy outfit? I’d love to know what you choose!

Try This: Lu La Roe Julia and Leggings

Hello friend! I was recently contacted by a lovely subscriber Jamie Denning (check out her Facebook group) who offered to send me some Lu La Roe items to try. Because I have seen so many of you guys rocking and loving Lu La Roe, I had to try it as well. Jamie sent me four items, two I will showcase here, and the other two in another post. Today’s focus will by on the Julia dress and the leggings.

First let’s discuss the items and how they are named. Lu La Roe gives every cut/item they make a specific name. Then they change up the print. So if you know the style you like, you can easily stock up in different colors and patterns as they come out. The Julia (a fitted knee length dress) was a home run for me: it is not only a great fit, but also a fantastic print. I just love how there are two sets of stripes going on in the same piece.

Dressed Up Julia

I first paired the Julia with heels for a more formal occasion. Because of my love of pattern mixing, I had to add another print with my shoes. The stripes were just screaming for some polka dots!

polished whimsy in striped lu la roe julia

Because of the dressier look I was going for, I opted for delicate and feminine pieces of jewelry. I especially adore the Araksi necklace from Baublebar for outfits like this.

Lu La Roe Julia Goes Casual

Next I wanted to try a more casual look. Because I have always loved the look of a chambray shirt paired with a striped dress, I decided to try it here too. It’s a simple but pulled together look. I paired it with my Skechers slip ons and I’m ready for anything.

For the jewelry with this outfit, I decided to keep it simple and fuss free by wearing just a statement necklace.

Demure Julia

For a more demure look, I paired a pretty neck scarf from Zyania with the Julia. It instantly increased the feminine touch. Furthermore, it was another opportunity for me to pattern mix, which is always good!

Julia With an Edge

For the last outfit with the Julia, I wanted an edgier look. I was lucky that my good friend and fellow blogger Kristen had suggested wearing it as a tunic. I quickly used that idea for this look. Basically, I bunched up the bottom of the dress and secured it along the inside seam with safety pins. Then I simply paired it with leather leggings, and voila, we have a cool and edgy outfit.

To complete this look, I added studded boots to further amp up the cool factor. I also chose a moto style purse and pretty tassel earrings.

Lu La Roe Leggings

After hearing all about the leggings, I knew I had to try a pair. I am thrilled that Jamie sent me a polka dot pair. Obviouvly I adore a whimsical print, and polka dot is as whimsical as you can get! Moreover, I found the leggings to be truly soft and comfortable. Also, I may have worn them for 36 hour straight (don’t judge!)

I paired the leggings with a lace up sweater and booties. I also added a pair of teal druzy stud earrings to match the teal in the leggings.

Overall, I have had a great first experience with Lu La Roe. Make sure to look out for my future post on the Cassie skirt and Classic tee. If you are interested in trying out Lu La Roe, I encourage you to connect with Jamie. I highly recommend working with her. Check out her facebook group and get started with the fun!

Try This: Colorful Coat

Hello friend! Since winter is extending another 6 weeks, we need to hold on to our coats a while longer. If you’re like me and you’re over wearing your neutral outerwear, then you must try a fun colorful coat. My current favorite is this gorgeous green one from Pink Martini Collection. This verdant overcoat will brighten up the coldest and dreariest of days.

polished whimsy in green ruffle coat

I am very excited to partner with Pink Martini Collection because of the beautiful vintage inspired items they offer. If you’re a lover of Anthropologie and Modcloth, you will similarly adore Pink Martini Collection. The have sweet and whimsical pieces, with the perfect feminine touch such as the ruffle detail on the collar of the coat.

Polished whimsy in green colorful coat Polished whimsy in green coat

Another one of the details I love about this coat, is the fun lining: a floral print! I truly appreciate it when a company puts that much thought into the little details. I may be the only person who sees the lining, but it makes me happy to know it’s there! And ultimately, I’m the one wearing it, so that’s all that matters!

Polished whimsy in leopard print skirt and green colorful coat Polished whimsy in leopard print skirt and green colorful coat

I chose to pair the coat with a bold leopard print skirt and a simple black sweater. However, since it is a solid color, it can be worn with many other solids as well as prints. Because of the neutral color of the coat (not too Christmas-y) it can be worn during winter and into spring. Therefore, I find that to be a very versatile layering piece.

Polished whimsy in green coat Polished whimsy in green coat

For the rest of my outfit, I chose simple black pumps to coordinate with the skirt and top. Finally, for jewelry, I chose a pair of neutral statement earrings.

Polished whimsy in green colorful coat

I hope I have convinced you that adding a colorful coat to your wardrobe is a must. If so, then I encourage you to check out my choice in green or in burgundy. If however you still prefer neutral colors or are in need of a replacement, the coat is also available in gray. My other outfit items are available to shop below:

Try This: Striped Fur Coat

Hello friend! While I have always liked the look of fur (and faux fur) coats, I haven’t truly felt the need for it. First because I live in Southern California, and our winters are fairly mild. Second, because I am petite and I worry that a large coat would drown me. But when I saw this short striped fur coat on Make Me Chic, I thought it would be the perfect one for me.

Polished whimsy in striped fur coat

Edgy Striped Fur Coat

For my first look, I knew I wanted to pair the coat with multiple textures, including distressed denim. Therefore I chose my new and very distressed pair of American Eagle jeans. To add another element of texture, I wore my black lace blouse underneath.

Polished whimsy in striped fur coat with lace top and distressed jeansPolished whimsy in striped fur coat with lace top and distressed jeansPolished whimsy in striped fur coat with lace top and distressed jeans

I loved how it turned out. The juxtaposition of the textures is exactly what I wanted.

Polished whimsy in striped fur coat with lace top and distressed jeansPolished whimsy in striped fur coat with lace top and distressed jeans

For my accessories I kept it simple with just a beautiful pair of earrings and my Rebecca Minkoff Love bag. This time I doubled up the chain on the bag to make it more of a shoulder bag than a crossbody. That small change makes such a difference in the bag.

Polished whimsy in striped fur coat with lace top and distressed jeansPolished whimsy in striped fur coat with lace top and distressed jeansPolished whimsy in striped fur coat with lace top and distressed jeans

As for the shoes, I wanted to add some subtle pattern mixing, so I wore my favorite pair of leopard print heels. Because the shoe also has black in it, it helps it to blend in with the outfit while still providing a pop of interest.

Feminine Striped Fur Coat

For my second look, I wanted to pair the striped fur coat with a feminine and flowy skirt. And what better skirt than my new pleated velvet one? An added bonus to this combination is another beautiful play on textures.

Polished whimsy in striped fur coat and pleated velvet skirtPolished whimsy in striped fur coat and pleated velvet skirt

I just love pairing velvet and fur for winter. For shoes I went with my old stand-by silver pumps. They never fail me!

Polished whimsy in striped fur coat and pleated velvet skirtPolished whimsy in striped fur coat and pleated velvet skirtBecause there is so much texture already in the outfit, I wanted to keep the jewelry minimal. Therefore I just wore a pair of mini tassel earrings and a statement ring. And finally, I topped it all off with a small clutch.

Polished whimsy in striped fur coat and pleated velvet skirtPolished whimsy in striped fur coat and pleated velvet skirtPolished whimsy in striped fur coat and pleated velvet skirt

Although it took me a while to start wearing fur coats, I am now head over heels, thanks to this beautiful striped fur coat from Make Me Chic. Therefore, you will likely see me wearing it quite often this winter. Knowing myself, I will try to change up the look each time. So if you have any suggestions, please let me know!

Try This: Velvet Crush

Hello friend! With velvet on trend, I have been investing in a few key pieces. I adore velvet. The texture is rich and alluring. But some may find it old and stuffy. Let me assure you, it is neither old or stuffy if you wear it the right way. Here are my four fun and easy ways to wear velvet.

Understated Black Velvet Jeans

Wearing black velvet jeans is a subtle way of wearing the trend. First of all, it looks like jeans. Only when you get close up does it look like velvet. Second, it’s black. Black always looks more neutral and blend-able than other colors, this is especially true when it comes to velvet.

Polished whimsy in velvet jeans Polished whimsy in velvet jeans

Here I paired the pants with a pretty sweater from Club Monaco. The chiffon panels on the back add feminine and whimsical details to the outfit.

Polished whimsy in velvet jeans

Unfortunately my sweater is from a few seasons past, but I found and linked a few that are similar below:

Take it to the Accessories

If wearing an item of clothing in velvet is too much for you, then just stick to a pair of shoes or a bag! Both are equally cute and can make the statement without you having to wear it on your body. A perfect example is this look from my leather leggings post.

Polished whimsy in velvet shoes Polished whimsy in velvet shoespolished whimsy wearing leather leggings and velvet shoes

I was lucky and was able to purchase these amazing block heel velvet shoes before they sold out. So unfortunately, I cannot link the exact same pair. But through the power of the internet, I have found a few similar options, many on sale!

If velvet shoes aren’t your style, there are also many options in purses:

Say it with Your Jewelry

For an even more subtle look, simply choose to feature the fabric in a fabulous piece of jewelry. A velvet choker may be all you need to add some drama to your look.

polished whimsy in velvet choker polished whimsy in velvet choker

I decided to be daring and get mine in a jewel tone. But you can keep it simple and wear black if you’d prefer. The choice is yours! Here is a round-up of pretty options.

polished whimsy in velvet choker polished whimsy in velvet choker

Maximize the Effect

For the non-shy among us, we can go all out and wear an entire item of clothing in the fabric. Even more effective is to choose something non-black. I decided to go with this gorgeous gray pleated skirt.

Polished whimsy in pleated gray velvet skirt polished whimsy in pleated gray velvet skirt

I paired the skirt with muted shades of blush and mauve. The result is a perfect winter palette, all united by the floral scarf. For my accessories, I chose to coordinate with the color scheme by adding a pair of gray tassel earrings.

If you were shy or ambivalent about wearing velvet, I hope this post helps you see how easily you can incorporate it into your wardrobe. Whether you are a new convert or a long-time fan, let me know how you will be wearing velvet.

Try This: White Jeans in Winter

Hello friend! Sadly it wasn’t until recently that I realized I could wear my white jeans beyond the summer months. But that’s the beauty of fashion and personal style: it always evolves. So thanks to my lovely fashionista friends, I am now all about wearing my white jeans in winter! In case you’re not sure, let me show you how it can be done.

White Jeans for the Office

Right away, I knew I had to try a work appropriate look. I felt that wearing denim to the office would be the most difficult to pull off, so I set ahead to do so. Surprising, I found an outfit very easily AND it looks great! I think it stems from the fact that white jeans look more like pants than they look like jeans. Therefore, you can easily make them office ready (just be sure to choose a non distressed pair like mine here).

Polished whimsy in white jeans for winter at the office

To wear the white jeans to work, I simply paired them with a navy top and a tweed blazer. The look is instantly office chic. I went with blues because I think it’s a perfect color for winter, read more about it in my winter transition post.

Polished whimsy in white jeans for winter
Polished whimsy in white jeans for winter at the office

For my accessories, I chose a pair of silver pumps and a blue handbag. Silver pumps are a surprisingly neutral shoe. They work well for work and play. If you don’t have one yet, I highly urge you to consider one. I will link to a few pair (most on sale!) below.

Lastly, for my jewelry, I chose to wear only statement earrings. Now I went back and forth on this decision, as I thought a necklace could also look good. However in the end, I stuck with the earrings. Because the scalloped edging on the jacket is so pretty, I didn’t want to distract the eye away from it with a necklace.

Polished whimsy in white jeans for winter at the office

Casual White Jeans in Winter

A more casual look with white jeans in winter can easily be created with a simple jeans and sweater look. For this one, I chose a very cozy turtleneck sweater with many neutral tones mixed in. The result is simple yet refined.

Polished whimsy in white jeans for winter Polished whimsy in white jeans in winter casual outfit

My favorite part of this outfit is of course the fabulous booties. I have been wanting casual gray booties for a while, and this pair with its edgy vibe is just perfect.

Polished whimsy in free people hybrid leather ankle boots

White Jeans and OTK Boots

What kind of a white jeans in winter post would this be if I didn’t incorporate over the knee boots, right? So I tried it and I LOVED it. Therefore I have two outfits with it. The first is this more casual one. Here I paired the jeans (my favorite distressed pair) with olive and taupe. The overall neutral tone allowed me to have fun with pattern, texture and proportion.

Polished whimsy in white jeans and over the knee boots Polished whimsy in white jeans and peplum top

I like how the peplum top works with the tall boots. And the little bits of distressed white denim showing are a great detail. These boots are a great find in that they are truly the perfect neutral tone for winter. This shade of taupe will work with any and every outfit! So if you own a pair, bust them out to wear with your white jeans this winter!

Polished whimsy in white jeans and over the knee taupe franko sarto boots

Now the fun doesn’t have to stop here. I also tried this look by adding in a fur vest. Since we are in winter, the fur adds a layer of warmth. Moreover, it adds fun texture and print to the outfit.

Polished whimsy in white jeans for winter Polished whimsy in white jeans for winter

White Jeans for a Night Out

For my last outfit, I wanted a going out look. Because I still wanted to wear it with a boot, I switched to my slimmer and sexier evening OTK boots. And what better color for a night out than black right? So the outfit quickly came together as a black and white look.

Polished whimsy in white jeans in winter going out look

Although I am a color girl, sometimes a black and white outfit is all the statement a girl needs. Moreover, all of the beautiful texture gives it a lot of interest and elegance.

Polished whimsy in white jeans and lace Polished whimsy in white jeans in winter and lace going out outfit

Because the lace blouse has so much beautiful detail already, I decided to skip a necklace and opt only for a pair of earrings. These black and white pair that resemble lace are a perfect companion to the outfit.

Polished whimsy in white jeans in winter going out outfit

In conclusion, I think it is safe to say that I am loving white jeans in winter. There are endless ways to wear them for every kind of occasion. I’d love to know how you are wearing white jeans in winter. Let me know in the comments or tag me on Instagram.

Clothing pieces from the post (and close alternatives of older items) are linked below.

Try This: Plaid and Lace

Hello friend! As you know from reading my blog, I enjoy pairing unexpected pieces together (read more about it in my lace skirt and sweatshirt post). Because I have recently been pulling out my white items of clothing from storage (discussed in my winter transition post), I came upon that same lace skirt. I knew I wanted to wear it in a unique way, so I tried a plaid and lace outfit.

polished whimsy in plaid and lace outfit

Plaid and White Lace

The outfit came out better than I anticipated. There is just something inherently beautiful about pairing unexpected pieces together. I especially like to pair “soft” with “tough” which is how I came up with my camo and lace post. The same concept works here. A “tough” or masculine plaid shirt is paired with a “soft” or feminine lace skirt.

polished whimsy in plaid and lace outfit polished whimsy in plaid and lace outfit

An added bonus of wearing this skirt in the winter is the ability to stretch out my summer wardrobe. Although this skirt, with its feminine eyelet and scallop detail, is more of a summer skirt, paired with the flannel, it can pass in the winter.

polished whimsy in plaid and lace outfit

Even though the outfit itself is such a standout, I still couldn’t resist adding another pattern in. Therefore, I wore a leopard print shoe. Then I just pulled it all together with a black shoulder bag. Lastly, for jewelry, I added one of my favorite earrings and some fun rings.

polished whimsy in plaid and lace outfit and baublebar earrings

Plaid and Black Lace

Because the above outfit worked out so well, I set out to try it with another lace skirt. I chose a pretty black and taupe lace skirt. This time, I chose a plaid top with many neutral tones in it. The outfit also turned out great.

Polished whimsy in plaid and lace outfitpolished whimsy in plaid and lace outfit

For the accessories here, I chose not to pattern mix (it does happen once in a while)! Instead I opted for accessories with some fun details and textures. Therefore I chose a pair of booties with fringe and a fun textured clutch.

polished whimsy in plaid and lace outfit polished whimsy in plaid and lace All in all, I think both of these outfits turned out great. Furthermore, it gives you more options on mixing your clothing items together. I hope you try a plaid and lace outfit for yourself!
