2017 Fall Fashion Trends

Hello friend! With fall almost here, it’s time to start thinking about the 2017 fall fashion trends and deciding which ones we’ll participate in. I have looked through countless magazines and websites to pull together what I think will be the most interesting trends this season. But first, if you’re not quite ready for fall, check out my post on summer to fall transition.

As with every new season, I will rely on pieces already in my wardrobe, along with some updates from new purchases. Therefore I will be including photos from previous seasons. Please excuse the lower quality photos as some were taken before my blogging days!

2017 Fall Fashion Trends: Fun Trim

Whether it be feathers, fur or fringe, a fun trim is definitely on call for 2017 fall fashion trends. I definitely plan on getting aboard this trend. That’s because I have always had a fondness for feathers (at one time I even wanted a feather tattoo)! I think feather trim will be a more painless option! Until I find such skirt, I will wear my Banana Republic fringe skirt (I linked a few comparable ones below, you’re welcome!).

Fall 2017 fashion trends fringe
Add some fun this holiday season with a fringy skirt!

2017 Fall Fashion Trends: Shimmer and Shine

From patent leather to sequins, the 2017 fall fashion trends are calling for some high shine items! Polished metallics and glossy coated items were big too. Also essential this season: glitter! Whether in shoes or other items, a little sprinkle of glitter is on point. I will participate by wearing my silver pumps and perhaps adding a sequined skirt to my collection.

2017 Fall Fashion Trends: Florals

While not commonly a fall trend, florals are going to be big this fall! I can proudly say I was ahead of the curve with this one. I actually wore fall florals (and blogged about it) last year. Therefore I can easily participate in the trend again this year!

2017 Fall Fashion Trends: Red

Well this girl is certainly happy to see red as the color for fall. I’ve always loved red. Probably because as a teen I wanted to be “The lady in red” from that ubiquitous love song! Therefore, I will certainly be donning red this fall. While the runways showed a bunch of head to toe red outfits, you can certainly start with just a splash!

This may be the perfect season to bring back my red leather trench coat. It’s one of my “museum” pieces (more to come on that soon)! It’s such a statement piece that I had retired it for a few years. But with red being so big this fall, I may have to resurface that piece. You can try a bold red coat as well. Or why not try the “it” shoes in red? I’ve linked a few options for you below!

2017 Fall Fashion Trends: Retro Plaid

Plaid is certainly a common fall print, so I’m not surprised to see it here. According to some insiders, the difference this season is that the plaid is more retro (think 70s style: with browns and oranges). Because I have always loved plaid, I am eager to try this trend as well. I plan on finding (within my closet and at the stores) some of the more classic plaid.

2017 Fall Fashion Trends: Corduroy

Another one of the 2017 fall fashion trends that I am not surprised about is corduroy. Similar to plaid, corduroy seems to come around every fall. This is another trend I can easily follow. I already own a beautiful mustard yellow corduroy skirt from Anthropologie. I have worn it multiple times in the past and I am sure to wear it again this fall.

I’m also eyeing this gorgeous corduroy top. I think it will be just the item to add to my 2017 fall fashion trends list.

I have to admit that the 2017 fall fashion trends has got me excited for the cooler weather ahead. Which one of these trends are your favorites so far? And just in case you thought that’s all I had to offer, you’re wrong! Stay tuned for part II of my 2017 fall fashion trends. There are more exciting things to come!

Try This: Fourth Of July Outfit Ideas

Hello friend! With fourth of July here, we need some fun and colorful outfits. Because I like to dress for a theme, I’m excited to bring on the red, white and blue. Let me give you multiple fourth of July outfit ideas.

Casual Fourth of July Outfit

For a casual yet polished look, why not pair a red striped off the shoulder top with some denim shorts?

It makes for a simple outfit to wear to a barbecue and to watch fireworks.

I chose to wear my favorite pair of summer booties. These are my favorites because of the fantastic details. I adore that it has a deep slit on each side. I also love that it is perforated and open toe. They add a nice touch to every outfit I wear. You can also see the booties and shorts styled another way in my cactus print top post.

Accessories can also make a fun statement for a fourth of July outfit. I chose to add another punch of blue with my earrings.

Subtle Fourth of July Outfit

If you prefer to be less obvious in your outfit themes, try a simple chambray dress and add some red and white accessories. Because chambray is such a ubiquitous fabric, it doesn’t scream “Fourth of July outfit,” but it does whisper it! Therefore you can feel like you are participating in the theme without being too obvious.

This dress is my favorite chambray dress at the moment. It is so easy to simply throw on and go! But once I pair it with the fun red white and blue clutch, it makes for a fabulous fourth of July outfit!

I chose to wear neutral shoes so not to distract from the fun colors of the outfit. The gladiator sandals added some personality without competing to be the center of attention.

A Hint of Fourth of July Outfit

When all else fails or you just don’t have the time to plan, you can make a fourth of July outfit easily with a chambray top (or any blue top) and a red and white striped clutch. This look is similar to the one above, but even simpler.

Dressy Fourth of July Outfit

I wanted to include a dressier fourth of July outfit option in case some of us have a tad more formal event to attend. I still kept with the color theme of red white and blue. However, I chose more upscale pieces of clothing. For example I chose a red pleated skirt and a flirty cold shoulder top.

To make it even more formal, you can pair the outfit with some high heeled sandals. But I chose to keep with the booties for an in-between look.

Because the neckline of the dress is so open, I decided to wear a bold necklace. I chose the Isadora bib from Baublebar because it complemented the color palette so well.

Overall I love the flirty and feminine feel of this fourth of July outfit. It’s definitely my favorite of the three.

Wardrobe Winter to Spring Transition

Hello friend! As we are emerging out of winter, it’s time to start our wardrobe spring transition. While I do a similar transition with each change of season, winter to spring transition is my favorite! That’s because I love warmer weather and longer days of sunshine. So even though it’s a big task to change out my closet, I do so happily. Let me share a few key things I change in this transitional time.

Spring Transition With White Accessories

While I enjoy white jewelry, I tend to avoid wearing it in the winter. I just feel it is more of a summer item. I also do not mind segregating some items for certain seasons. It gives me something to look forward to with each change of season. It’s almost like getting something new! Also, white looks great on tanned skin.

Besides jewelry, I will also be bringing out my white pumps. Before last year, I had not worn white dress shoes since I was a kid. But after seeing how versatile they were on Caryl, I decided to give them a try. It turns out she was right, and I’ve been wearing them ever since!

Bring in Some Brights

While I will continue to wear pastels and soft shades from winter into Spring, I will also add some brighter colors. Bright aquas, pinks and yellows are the perfect spring colors. Case in point is this pretty bright pink dress. Its vibrant hues completely scream spring.

For the accessories in this outfit, I chose to wear my favorite floral pumps. Because the shoe has shades of blue, I then chose a blue clutch to complete the look. For the jewelry, I kept with my current obsession, the Trellis Lane bracelets (discount code “elsie25” still valid for 25% off).

Swap Out Textures

During winter, we were cacooning ourselves in woolen pieces and blanket scarves. But now that spring is here, it’s time to substitute those heavier textures with lighter ones. One of my favorite ones to bring out in spring is eyelet lace. Whether it is in a dress, skirt or top, eyelet lace is always a perfectly feminine warm weather texture! This pretty color-blocked dress is just perfect right now.

To further illustrate my first tip, I chose to wear my white accessories with this dress. What can I say, I am so ready for spring!

For the rest of my accessories I wanted to add both texture and pattern with my leopard print clutch. I also chose a small (but effective) pop of color in my earrings.

Update the Shoes

My last tip to prepare for spring transition is to replace your heavy winter boots with lighter shoes. That means bringing out my pretty flats and sandals. Besides what I already own, I am also eyeing a few key items. One is the wedge espadrille everyone is loving. The second is a cute perforated spring bootie. With these two items, my feet will be ready to welcome spring with style!

2017 Spring Trends II

Hello friend! As I promised in my 2017 spring trends post, I am continuing with another installment of the trends.

Banker Stripes

Truth be told, before researching for this year’s spring trends, I didn’t even know what banker stripes were. I have however, always liked them, I just didn’t know they had a name! It turns out that banker stripes are vertical medium blue and white stripes. Furthermore, I actually own some items in banker stripes. The item I am wearing below is a classic button-down shirt in banker stripes.

Polished whimsy in banker stripes for 2014 Spring trends banker stripes for 2014 Spring trends

I have also found some similar looks if you’d like to add one to your spring/summer wardrobe:

Bare Your Bra

One trend that I may sit out is the bra as a top trend. The trend is simply wearing a bra (a pretty decorative bra, not your utilitarian nude everyday bra of course) as a top. Some of them have more coverage (like a cropped tank top) but others are a simple no support triangle bra. The runways featured a lot pretty satin ones.

But like I said, this trend will be one I will largely pass. The only way I see myself wearing this trend is possibly layered under a sheer top or a loose muscle tank. I have also seen some girls layer a pretty lace bralette over a t shirt. Another option would be to layer it under a blazer. These might be more modest and reasonable ways of participating in the trend. But we’ll see how I feel and how the season plays out!

Say it With Your Tee

Now here is a trend that I can fully support: a graphic tee. You’ve seen my previous graphic tee post, so you know how much fun I have with them. Also, the trend doesn’t just stop with a tee, you can wear a graphic sweater, jacket, etc. Have fun with it. I know I will!

Wide Leg Pants

While I am mostly a skirt girl, I occasionally don a pair of pants. They tend to be jeans for the most part. For spring, both denim and other pants are moving away from skinnies and towards dramatic wide legs. This is another trend that I will likely sit out, mostly because I’ll be wearing skirts! However, I do own a nice pair of wide leg jeans which may make an appearance this spring!

I hope this round-up of spring trends has you excited for the new season ahead. Which ones will you participate in and which ones will you sit out?

2017 Spring Trends

Hello friend! The end of Winter is in sight, so now is the perfect time to start prepping for Spring. The first step is to simply familiarize myself with the trends: what’s new and what’s continuing. After that, I’ll know what to keep, what to retire, and what to buy. Since I started researching the 2017 Spring trends for myself, I thought I’d share it with you too. Because of the many trends, I will have to discuss them in a few separate posts.

Dramatic Sleeves

It seems that the bell sleeves trend is style going strong this Spring. Luckily, I have a few cute bell sleeve tops from last year that will transition well into this year also! I have one off the shoulder one. But this triple bell sleeve one is my current favorites.

Bell sleeves are a 2017 spring trends returnDramatic sleeves for 2017 Spring trends

Therefore I am set in the bell sleeves department! But besides bell sleeves, the 2017 Spring trends show a lot of other types of dramatic sleeves. Think balloon sleeves, exaggerated shoulders and other impactful details. I think I will likely pick up a balloon sleeve item. I’ve linked some of the ones I’ve been eyeing below.

Statement Earrings

The 2017 Spring trends feature large statement earrings as the accessory of choice. Luckily for me, that is also one of my favorite items of jewelry. I have quite a few that I own and love. But I will also likely pick up a few more. Because of my dark curly hair, I tend to pick light and bright colors. That way, it’ll actually stand out against my hair.

Polished whimsy in baublebar statement earrings

For this spring, opt for bold and colorful earrings featuring pom poms, tassels and more!

Shoulder Baring

Whether it’s off the shoulder or cold shoulder, these shoulder baring tops will still be around for Spring 2017. However, many of the designers have added a slight tweak: only one of the shoulders is bare. This asymmetrical update will be fun to follow and emulate. I have found some amazing options for this trend too!

Rainbow Stripes

You can probably predict how excited I am about this 2017 Spring trend! I love stripes. I also love color. Put them together and I am in heaven. Luckily I already have a top that I can wear for this trend. Furthermore, I purchased a fun skirt last year that will also work. But I sure don’t mind picking up another skirt to add to my collections!

Adding some of these items to my existing pieces will have me ready for Spring. Which of these trends are you most excited about? Let me know in the comments. Also, make sure to sign up on the email list to catch the rest of my Spring 2017 trends report.

Pattern Primer: Winter Florals

Hello friend! While we expect to wear floral print in spring and summer, we don’t have to leave it all behind in the cooler months. I’ve shown you before how to wear floral prints in the fall. Now, let me show you how to wear winter florals.

Muted Winter Florals

One of the ways I like to wear a floral print in the winter, is to choose a muted color palette. Therefore I forego the bright pinks and reds. Instead I opt for grays, mauves, and winter white. Here I chose a scarf with these beautiful muted shades in a lovely winter florals pattern.

Polished whimsy in winter florals Polished whimsy in winter florals

For another look, I chose more of a neutral color scheme. Here I paired the white and metallic floral tee with a  polka dot skirt. Because the colors are neutral, I decided to play it up with my patterns by adding leopard print shoes.

winter florals and triple pattern mix by polished whimsy triple pattern mix and winter florals by polished whimsy

For accessories, I stuck with the color scheme and went with gray tassel earrings. Because I love pairing pink with gray, I chose to wear my pink purse with this look.

Dark Winter Florals

The second way I like to wear winter florals is by opting for dark and rich colors. To differentiate from fall florals, I choose deep plums and blues. Here I have a purple tone floral dress. The colors simply scream winter!

Polished whimsy in winter florals dress with over the knee boots Polished whimsy in winter florals dress with over the knee boots

For the jewelry, I kept with the tones of the dress and chose a gray wrap choker.

For the last look, I opted for a blue and brown floral print skirt. I paired it with a black criss cross tee.

Polished whimsy in winter florals skirt and criss cross top

For my accessories, I kept the purse and shoes black to further darken the look and hence make it more winter-y! I then echoed the blue in the skirt with my blue druzy stud earrings.

With so many options for winter florals around, I urge you to give it a try! Whether it’s an icy-cool color scheme or a deep blue, wearing prints with winter florals is easy to do. If you need to add some winter florals into your wardrobe, check out the items from this post as well as some of my recommendations below!

Winter Wardrobe Transition

Hello friend! Winter is finally here. Now we don’t have too cold a winter in Los Angeles, but I still like to adjust my clothes for the new season. Let me show you my process for updating my closet and transitioning into my winter wardrobe.

Update Colors of Winter Wardrobe

For my seasonal color palettes, I like to take cues from nature and the occasions of that season. For example, during fall transition, I like to wear warmer colors such as browns and oranges. Then, during December, I center my outfits around holiday colors. For that month, I wore a lot of red, green and gold. Now that we are in Winter, I lean towards a few staple color schemes.

First, I add white back into my wardrobe (stay tuned for winter white posts). During the fall months, I did not wear much white (besides small accent pieces). But now that it is winter, I can add it back in. Because winter is often associated with snow, white makes for a quintessential winter color.

In addition to the white, I adjust the rest of my colors away from the warm shades of fall and towards the cooler and icier tones of winter. For example, I will wear more blues and grays.

Try New Combinations

Winter is the perfect season to experiment with layers! I enjoy layering cool weather clothes such as scarves, vests and sweaters over other pieces in my wardrobe. This makes for fun and new combinations to wear. The key to making this type of look “work” is to choose a unifying color scheme.

Polished whimsy winter wardrobe transition

For example, pick items that have similar tones so they look like they “go” together even if they are from different seasons. As you can see in the example below, I have paired a spring/summer pleated skirt with a thick turtleneck sweater. Even though the items look like they are from different seasons, the outfit works because the colors are unified. In this example, it is the color gray that brings it all together.

Retire Some Pieces

Finally, I urge you to retire some items of clothing. Whether it’s a permanent retirement to a charity or a temporary retirement to storage, you will see results. Your winter wardrobe will be neater and more accessible.

No matter what, there will be some items you just won’t wear year round (for me that is rompers, shorts and sandals). Instead of letting them occupy valuable space in your closet, pack them away for the season. This accomplishes a working closet (in that everything in it can be worn at that time). It also gives you something to look forward to next season, where you get to bring out those stored pieces. It’s like free shopping!

These three simple updates keep me interested in my wardrobe and help me look fresh each season. Do you have any other tips? Please let me know in the comments!

The Beauty Beat: Fall Lipstick Colors

Hello friend! As you likely know, I adore makeup. I can never decide whether I love fashion or beauty more. Therefore I will have a beauty segment every now and then so I can get my beauty fix. You probably don’t know this, but I have even taken a few professional makeup classes. So that’s all the more reason that I discuss it on the blog. I would like to share what I have learned with you.

I think it is important to swap out your makeup shades in the changing seasons. It keeps your look updated and makes sure you don’t get in a rut. So I’d like to share with you my favorite fall lipstick colors. They all happen to be MAC, not because that’s the best brand out there. But it is one that I have been obsessed with since my teen years. So I know their line the best and am comfortable recommending them. I am rarely disappointed with a MAC lipstick.

Plum Shades

I always like to have a light plummy-mauve lipstick as my everyday lipstick in the fall. It tends to go with just about any makeup look and outfit. In fact, I keep one of these in my locker at work. Therefore if I have forgotten my lipstick, this one will step in for the day.

The one I have turned to year after year is MAC Syrup. Syrup is in the lustre formula, which is one of my preferred formulas for work. While it is an opaque color, it also has a shine and a light consistency. It feels very comfortable on the lips. However, I do have to reapply it throughout the day, especially after meals.

MAC Syrup

Another plum shade I like is MAC Plumful. Plumful is similar to Syrup, but as its name suggests, it has more of the plum shades to it. It is a beautiful color to wear for photos as it looks lustrous and natural in photographs. Similarly to Syrup, it also works well with many other makeup looks. Also like Syrup, Plumful is a lustre formula, making it a comfortable lipstick to wear.

Red Shades

In the fall, I move away from the pink reds and more towards the brown reds. The first of these colors I choose is MAC Brick-O-La. Brick-O-La is an amplified finish, meaning is is more opaque than the lustre but it still has some sheen. It has a very creamy look on the lips. As far as colors go, Brick-O-La reminds me of a cross between terra cotta and hot chocolate. It is a perfect muted red tone to wear on a daily basis.

Now when I want to wear a more attention demanding fall red, I turn to MAC Dubonnet. It is also an amplified finish, thus producing a creamy finish with a slight sheen. However, unlike Brick-O-La, Dubonnet is darker and more red. I like to describe it as a black cherry color. If I wear this to work, I simply blot it once or twice to make it more office appropriate.

Berry Shades

For the perfect berry shade, especially for evenings out, I always rely on MAC Rebel. Rebel has always been one of my favorite fall lipstick colors. The only downside to Rebel is that it’s a satin formula, which is a formulation I don’t usually enjoy. However, because the color is so beautiful, I happily wear this satin formula. Rebel is the perfect shade of berry, with a nice amount of blue in it. It is very striking color that will suite many skin tones.

Burgundy Shades

When it comes to burgundy shades, I have two favorites. The first is MAC Viva Glam III. It is a matte formula, so there is very little shine. However, it goes on very smoothly and easily. This lipstick is a brown-burgundy, so it’s fairly easy to wear (not too vampy). An added bonus is that the every cent spent on a Viva Glam lipstick goes to the MAC AIDS fund.

Now when I am ready to go bold and vampy, I take a walk on the dark side, literally! I use MAC Dark Side lipstick. Dark Side is an amplified finish, which I love. It applies easily and wears well. The color is a definitely a more purple toned burgundy.

I hope you enjoyed my favorite Fall lipstick colors. Please let me know how else I can help you with makeup. I’d love to pass on whatever I’ve learned to you friends!

Holiday Gift Guide

Hello friend! As you are surely aware, the holidays are right around the corner. The nearing of the holidays, brings with it our need and stress to get our holiday shopping done. Well don’t fret, my holiday gift guide is here to help you get the best gifts for your friends and family.

The Foodie

For the foodies in your life, or simply for a hostess gift, don’t overlook the beautiful houseware items at Anthropologie. An elegant cheeseboard and cheese knives would delight any hostess. For the baker in your group, opt for a pretty cake platter to display their concoctions. As for the wine lover, pick out a pretty corkscrew set or attractive wine rack.

The Fashionista

For the fashionistas in my life, I tend to gift accessories rather than clothing items. This saves me and the recipient from any embarrassing “guess her size” games. My first go-to option is jewelry. For that I usually turn to Baublebar. They have fashionable items at a variety of price points.

For the trendier fashionista friends, I’d opt for “now” pieces such as tassel earrings or a choker. For the ladies with more classic style, choose a simple bar necklace that can be layered for added fun. A twisted strand of pearls is also a perfect option for the preppy fashionista. Lastly, a classic monogram necklace is always a winner.

Besides jewelry, I also like to gift small necessities that one doesn’t buy for oneself. This year, that is going to be the portable phone charger. I have found a few that I absolutely adore. One is this tassel charger from Rebecca Minkoff. It is genius, an accessory and an invaluable tool all in one! The others are a few from Kate Spade, including this striped charger, and this sparkly counterpart.

The Stranger

Now we all at some point have to buy a gift for a virtual stranger, a new girlfriend of a family member, new boss, or a distant relative you are visiting. These gifts are often the most challenging. I recommend to stick to something basic for the home or office. I often will choose pretty stationary or a planner. Pretty desktop organizers are also good choices. When all else fails, I always turn to candles. My favorite is the Capri candle in blue volcano. The scent is unique and exotic, yet clean and comforting.

I hope my holiday gift guide has given you some ideas as what to purchase. Please share this post using the links below so that others who may need it can also see! Good luck out there!

My Black Friday Sale Picks

Hello friend! Well we made it to Thanksgiving. And with this season comes a lot of shopping. Between the black Friday sales and all of the upcoming holiday sales, these months have always been heavy spending seasons for me. This year I am trying to be strategic. See my sale picks and reasons below.

Strategy 1: Pick Sales with Deepest Discounts

This year J. Crew is having an unprecedented 40% off sale. Because I have always been a big fan of theirs, I cannot pass up such a great deal. Furthermore, since I shop there often, I know my sizes. Therefore, I can comfortably shop from home! Here are my picks.

I am adoring the black and red plaid of the Stewart print. It’s a colorway I have not seen before, so I had to have it! I think it will be a perfect holiday piece. The only concern is paring down which one of the three items I’m eyeing to purchase… thoughts?

Other options for holiday tops are these three pretties. The bow tops are seasonal yet classic, making either a wise purchase. The black lace peplum top (which also comes in pink and nude) is another lovely holiday piece.

My last three picks are more work appropriate. First is this blush pink turtleneck sweater. Because I have been wanting to purchase one for over a year, this will definitely be a smart purchase. The blue and white striped bell sleeve tee will also be a versatile item. I adore the petiteness of the sleeves. It gives a nod to the trend, while still being classic. Lastly, that gorgeous skirt is a complete must have. I adore the bold color and the fun nautical theme

Strategy 2: Try Something New

Why not take the opportunity of a good sale to purchase an item you may not have purchased otherwise. Go ahead, try a new brand, attempt that trend, or change up your colors. I was excited to see the fantastic deals at Banana Republic: everything is 50% off. Therefore, I could try some fun new items. The ones that caught my eye the most are these:

I’ve been wanting a couple of more sweaters, so this one and this one will be perfect additions to my wardrobe. Another item I’ve been wanting to wear more is a tweed jacket. This pretty scalloped one stole my heart. Last, I wouldn’t mind adding some sequins to my closet. That is one texture I do not have much of, so a sale item would be a perfect remedy.

Strategy 3: Update your Wardrobe Essentials

Use this opportunity to purchase fun essentials. A great place for that is shopbop. They have both classic staples as well as on trend pieces. Consider a neutral shoulder bag like this one. This is also a good time to stock up on or replace worn out boots. Lastly, consider a fun yet timeless clutch to get you through this and future holidays. I am also eyeing this amazing glittery one here.
