Color Crush: Pink and Orange Outfit

Hello friend! I am so excited to finally bring you this color combination. That’s because I have been sitting on the idea for a long time. And now I have the perfect pieces to demonstrate this gorgeous color palette to you! Without further ado, let’s discuss the brilliant color combination of a pink and orange outfit.

How to wear a pink and orange outfit

Does a Pink and Orange Outfit Really Work?

Those of you who follow my color crush series know that I like to read about color theory. So of course I did the same for this color combination. I was happy to see that a pink and orange outfit abides by color theory combination.

This is an example of an analogous color combination. Therefore it works (or is pleasing to the eye) because the colors fall next to each other on the color wheel. In reality, red and orange fall next to each other. But because pink is just a tint of red, the theory still holds. Furthermore, the little yellow flowers adds a third analogous color, resulting in an overall harmonious color scheme.

So after color theory gave the green light for my look, I was hungry to style a pink and orange outfit.  After seeing this top on Debbie Matenopoulos on TV, I tracked one down on matchesfasion.com. I loved the saturated shade of pink and the pretty embroidered flowers. I knew it would be a perfect candidate for the outfit I was dreaming up in my head.

My Pink and Orange Outfit

After weeks of planning and tracking down, I finally got the chance to wear my own pink and orange outfit. Needless to say, I was not disappointed! As predicted by color theory, the colors are harmonious.

I had initially paired nude shoes with the outfit, but they just didn’t pop. So I decided to be bold and wear pink pumps instead. While I was worried it would be pink overkill, I think it actually turned out great! The pink simply sandwiched the orange!

For my purse, I chose to keep it neutral, but added another texture with my gold clutch.

Lastly for my jewelry, I chose to wear only earrings. A necklace would just detract from the intricate embroidery of the top. I also wore some fun bracelets, including my newly re-acquired renegade bracelet. The gold tones work perfectly with my pink and orange outfit.

After I got dressed, I was faced with a small dilemma. What color makeup to wear? With so many colors in the outfit, I didn’t want to clash. The safe path would have been to wear neutrals. However, I was wearing this outfit to a special occasion, so I wanted some fun makeup. Also, I’m not one to opt for the safe path (when it comes to fashion and beauty anyways!). Therefore I chose to wear a pretty orange duochrome eye shadow on my lids and bright pink lips! I also added a pretty glow with my favorite highlighter.

Color Crush: Pink and Red Outfit

Hello friend! A few weeks back I was inspired to wear a pink and red outfit. The idea came about quite candidly. I was trying to find a new way to wear my red pleated skirt for a night out. Because I wanted to make the color combination more spring appropriate, I thought to try it with pink. The outfit turned out just as I imagined it. Therefore I decided to share it with you here.

How to wear a pink and red outfit. Blogger Polished Whimsy shows how to put together a bold color blocking look with a red pleated skirt.

Does a Pink and Red Outfit Really Work?

To make sure that a pink and red outfit is actually cohesive, I did a quick search on my color theory. {Side note: I adore color theory. If I had time, I would take a course in it!} Turns out pink isn’t really a color, oops! Its just a tint of red. So technically speaking, this is a monochromatic outfit. Kind of fun, huh? And monochromatic looks, including tints of the same color, work! Therefore this outfit abides by color theory!

How to Wear a Pink and Red Outfit

The way to make the outfit look purposeful is to be bold. Use the colors in big pieces so that it looks intentional. Therefore I did a simple color blocking look here.

How to wear a pink and red outfit. Blogger Polished Whimsy shows how to put together a bold color blocking look with a red pleated skirt. How to wear a pink and red outfit. Blogger Polished Whimsy shows how to put together a bold color blocking look with a red pleated skirt.

I love how each color stands out on its own, but also complements the other.

How to Accessorize with a Pink and Red Outfit

When I went to add accessories to my pink and red outfit, I wanted to add a print or two. I first went to my floral shoes. These have been my go-to for a while now. They are perfect for this outfit because they have pink and red in the shoe. Then I used the shoe as a jumping off point for my purse. Because there is also blue in the shoe, I decided to wear my blue clutch. The stripe of gold in the purse also serves as a second print, win!

For my jewelry, I decided to not wear a necklace as the top’s neckline already had pleats. I didn’t want to detract from that detail. Therefore I wore some hoops. My favorite at the moment are from Baublebar, a double hoop one named the Christiana Drops.

As for the the rest of my accessories, I threw on a few statement rings from Baublebar. I decided to keep my jewelry rose gold toned to go with the color theme. Therefore I wore my rose gold Daniel Wellington watch (use code “polishedwhimsy” for 15% off any item on their website). I paired the watch with my  rose gold Trellis Lane bracelets (the Aria and Olivia). You can use the discount code “polished25” for 25% off!

I hope my pink and red outfit has encouraged you to play with some colorful outfits as well. Whether it’s this exact color combination, a red pleated skirt or a color blocking outfit, if you replicate this look, tag me on Instagram. I love to see what great looks you come up with!

Color Crush: Pink and Yellow

Hello friend! Now that we’re well into spring, I am happily breaking out my spring colors. With this comes the chance to mix together new color combinations. This time I am pairing a pink blouse with my new HM yellow lace skirt. This combination results in the prettiest pink and yellow outfits, ones that would be just perfect for Easter!

Pink and yellow color and outfit combination featured on the color crush series on polished whimsy blog. A color blocking outfit with the HM yellow lace skirt and pink J crew blouse, making a perfect Easter outfit.

When I was thinking about what to wear for Easter, I knew I wanted to find a pretty color combination. I also knew I wanted to wear a fun new skirt. So when I saw the HM yellow lace skirt on a recent shopping trip, I snagged it up right away. Then came the debate of what to pair it with. I played with multiple options, but in the end settled for a solid pink top. I think pink and yellow is a perfect color combination for an Easter outfit.

Now let’s talk about the skirt. Seriously I cannot believe what a gorgeous skirt this is. The HM yellow lace skirt looks far more expensive than it really is. It sits comfortably at the waist, has a zipper closure in the back and an exquisite scalloped hem. I also like that there is a sheer panel on the bottom third. It adds an airy quality to the skirt while still keeping it modest.

I seriously just want to keep twirling around in this skirt. And I did…much to the annoyance of the joggers on this path!

So needless to say, I will be happily wearing this as my Easter outfit this year. The color combination is too stunning to pass up! To keep the focus on the pink and yellow color block, I chose to wear a simple nude pump. However for my jewelry, I chose to echo the yellow in the skirt with yellow accent earring.

As for the rest of my jewelry, I kept the pieces minimal. I chose to wear my new rose gold favorites. That includes my Daniel Wellington watch (get 15% of all purchases with code “polishedwhimsy”). Along with the watch, I wore my rose gold Trellis Lane bracelets (the Aria and Olivia). Luckily I have another discount code, if you want, for those, use “polished25” for 25% off!

I hope you like the pink and yellow color combination for my 2017 Easter outfit. I am just so pleased that I found the HM yellow lace skirt so that I could play with this amazing color combination. If you like to see more colors, check out my color crush series.

Color Crush: Light Blue and Red

Hello friend! With spring in full force, I am happy to start playing with new color palettes. One of my new favorites is light blue and red outfits. The original inspiration for this color palette was from a painting. Because the colors looked so pretty together, I vowed to make it into an outfit. So I hope to do the color combination justice!

Light Blue and Red Outfits: Floral

The simplest way to start to wear these colors is to find an item of clothing that already incorporates the two colors. Therefore when I saw this dress, I knew I had to have it. The result is a pretty mix of beautiful bright and soft colors. To further highlight the color combination, try adding light blue and red accessories.

Light Blue and Red Outfits: Preppy

A fun outfit for work is this combination with a light blue and red plaid shirt. I paired it with a light blue pencil skirt to make it polished for work.

Because I am always looking for an opportunity to pattern mix, I chose to wear my floral print shoes here. For the rest of my accessories, I chose to carry a navy purse to echo the navy in the shoes. And as for my jewelry, I decided to just wear one bold piece: my Zosma earrings.

Light Blue and Red Outfits: Color Block

For the daring color lovers out there, I challenge you to wear the colors boldly in a light blue and red color block! Here I chose a light blue blouse and red pleated skirt.

Once again, I chose my floral print shoes. I then added my navy clutch to contrast the blue of the top and coordinate with the shoes.

Light Blue and Red Outfits: It’s In The Bag

Sometimes a fantastic color combination can be found in one small accessory. Case in point is this pretty floral clutch. It has baby blue and red together in one item. Therefore you can wear a neutral item and just grab this baby to add the color to your outfit!

Color Crush: Blush and Gray

Hello friend! With winter to spring transition right around the corner, I am looking at new color combinations. As always, I like to be seasonal with my clothes and colors. Therefore I am currently wearing a lot of gray and white (see my winter transition post). But with spring approaching, I am beginning to add in some more color. One of the best color combinations for this time of year is blush and gray.

Blush and gray color combination Blush and gray

The outfit I chose to display this combination revolves around my new pair of Lee jeans. When I collaborated with the brand, I chose a pair of gray jeans (the Faith skinny). I have many pairs of blue and thus I wanted a change. Another reason is that my work does not allow blue jeans (no mention of other colored jeans!). Therefore a gray jean is technically within dress code, hooray!

I’d like to take a minute to discuss the jeans because I am honestly impressed with them. I’ve know the Lee brand since childhood, but in recent years have gravitated towards the higher end brands. Truth be told, these jeans are every bit as good as those. The fit is perfect: a true medium rise, a good amount of stretch and a sleek cut. Besides the fit, they are as comfortable as can be, with a super soft lining inside the waistband!

Blush and gray Polished whimsy color crush series: blush and gray

To truly display the blush and gray color combination, I chose to do a simple color blocking look. Therefore I paired the jeans with my Charming Charlie blouse (mine is sold out, but I’ll link options below).

To add a fun pop of color and a further nod towards spring, I chose to wear bright pink pumps. For my purse I chose my gray octagonal tote to tie the entire look together.

Because of the blouse’s neckline and shoulder details, I decided to forego a necklace and just wear a fun earring. To bring in some spring trends, I chose my new pom pom hoop earrings.

Polished in blush and gray and Baublebar earrings

I also chose to focus on my arm party. Therefore, I wore my tri-color watch and accentuated it with my rose gold Trellis Lane bracelets. I have the Olivia druzy bracelet and the Aria bangles. If you like anything on the Trellis Lane website, use code “POLISHED25” to get 25% off your purchase!

Blush and gray is a fresh and fun color combination. If you have not tried it yet, I urge you to do so.

Color Crush: Gray and Mustard

Hello friend! With the transition to winter, I will also update some of my color combinations. In winter, I tend to work in more cooler neutrals, like gray. For a seamless transition from fall to winter, I will pair gray and mustard in my outfits. This color combination combines one of my favorite fall colors with one of my favorite winter colors. Therefore, it’s guaranteed to be a winning combination! Let’s see the proof:

Gray and Mustard for Work

Add some interest to your work outfit by incorporating this new color scheme into your work wear.

In this outfit, the gray and mustard are already paired together in the skirt. Therefore, I simply played off of that by adding touches of mustard elsewhere. For example, I wore mustard shoes and a blouse with mustard accents.

Winter Ready in Gray and Mustard

Another work (or going out) outfit can be achieved by pairing a chunky turtleneck sweater with a yellow skirt. Actually, in this outfit, I wore the sweater over a dress (one of my favorite little tricks!) The effect is still the same; in essence it looks like a flowy skirt paired with a sweater. Moreover, it’s a smart way to extend the wear of your lighter weight dresses.

For accessories, I went off the black accents in the print of the dress and chose to add black shoes and a bag. For earrings, I added my black Chiquita drop earrings.

Casual Gray and Mustard

Take this color combination into other aspects of your life too. It is easy to make a casual look with gray and mustard. Here I paired a sweater and button down. The sweater already had both colors in it. The gray from the shirt solidifies the color palette. An added bonus is of course the fun pattern mix.

I played up the accessories for this look with a pretty pendant necklace and some fun bracelets.

Color Blocked in Gray and Mustard

For a casual going out look, I chose to concentrate on the colors themselves. Therefore I chose solids and went for a  color-blocked outfit. This gray cold shoulder sweater has been a great piece this winter (and at a great price point). While it keeps me covered and warm (the cold shoulder is truly not that cold!), it also adds style and flair to any outfit. Furthermore, the ruffle adds a sweet and romantic touch.

The bold color of the skirt is exactly what I was looking for. You know that I like pairing mustard with various other colors. Previously I have done posts on mustard and mint as well as mustard and burgundy, therefore I like having a bold mustard skirt in my closet. So when I saw this one at J.Crew over the holidays, I knew it had to be mine! I adore the nautical details in the buttons. It has since sold out, but here are some other options:

Toss in my favorite booties and the color block is complete. This allows for each piece to stand out on its own. For accessories I chose one standout piece, these amazing crescent earrings. In addition to the earrings, I went bold with my lip color too. This is the NYX liquid lipstick in Kitten Heels. It’s a bright red with a tinge of orange. It really brightens up the face!

Color Crush: Mustard and Burgundy

Hello friend! As we near the end of fall, I would like one last homage to my favorite color of the season: burgundy.  I adored pairing burgundy and blush as well as burgundy and pink. And let’s not forget baby blue and burgundy. Needless to say, I think burgundy pairs well with many other colors. So today, let me introduce you to one last pairing: mustard and burgundy.

x

Mustard and Burgundy for Work

For a simple work outfit, pair a mustard plaid (or other print) with a burgundy skirt. The vibrant colors complement each other perfectly. Because I adore pattern mixing, I chose to add leopard print pumps. However, if that is too much for you, simply pair it with a cognac shoe instead.

Polished whimsy in mustard and burgundy

For my accessories, I decided to wear an eye-catching necklace with the Araksi from Baublebar. I also doubled up on the burgundy by wearing a burgundy leather strap watch.

Polished whimsy in mustard and burgundy outfit and baublebar araksi necklace

A second work outfit is with this multi color striped top. Because the shirt has both mustard and burgundy in it, I decided to make that the focus of my color palette.

Polished whimsy in mustard and burgundy

Once again I brought in some leopard print because I enjoy mixing prints, but of course that is completely optional. In this outfit, I am also wearing some of the same pieces of jewelry as the last outfit. However, I’ve changed it up a bit in the styling. I am wearing the necklace backwards so that it is a simple circular  strand of crystal goodness right at the neckline. Don’t you just love versatile pieces like this?

Polished whimsy in mustard and burgundy and baublebar araksi necklace

Casual Mustard and Burgundy

For a casual look, simply pair a burgundy top with a mustard colorway scarf. Here I am wearing a mustard plaid blanket scarf. I paired it all with neutral grey jeans and black over the knee boots.

Polished whimsy in mustard and burgundy

Dressy Mustard and Burgundy

To achieve a more dressy look, I chose one of my all time favorite Anthropologie skirts. It is long since sold out, so I’m sorry for making you fall in love with it. But she really is a beauty! Ironically, the skirt has a burgundy underlay and a mustard waist line. It’s as if it was meant for this post! For this look, I paired the skirt with a burgundy cardigan and my favorite mustard heels.

Polished whimsy in mustard and burgundy

For my accessories, I added my Baublebar twisted pearl necklace and a statement belt.

Mustard and Burgundy Accessories

The color fun doesn’t have to stop with your clothes. You can also bring in the mustard and burgundy into your accessories. It’s not only a fun way to break up your routine of neutral accessories, but also a creative way of bringing in color into your outfit.

Polished whimsy in mustard and burgundy Polished whimsy in mustard and burgundy

As the fall season comes to an end, make it a point to celebrate the season of color by pairing your mustard and burgundy pieces together.

Color Crush: Burgundy and Pink

Hello friend! If it’s not obvious, I am a tad obsessed with burgundy. I’ve done multiple color crush series on burgundy pairings. Well, add another to the list because I am thoroughly obsessed with burgundy and pink.

Although I had done a burgundy and blush post, recently I have come to like burgundy paired with a slightly darker pink than blush. I find that a cooler mid tone pink works very well with burgundy.

Burgundy and Pink for the Office

Because I work full-time, I love to have fun outfits. Therefore, I had to bring this color scheme to my work outfits. For this first look, I paired my burgundy J. Crew pencil skirt with a pink J. Crew Factory buffalo plaid shirt.

Polished whimsy in burgundy and pink j crew work outfit

For accessories, I added my blush lace up heels along with a pretty pendant necklace. Because the necklace was a long one, I wanted some extra bling closer to my face. Therefore, I added a pretty pair of earrings.

Polished whimsy in burgundy and pink j crew buffalo plaid shirt

Another option for work is to incorporate a patterned blanket scarf with the same colors into the outfit. The colors are grounded by the neutral camel color that is found in the scarf and echoed in the vest.

Polished whimsy in burgundy and pink blanket scarf

Because the blanket scarf is so voluminous, I opted for stud earrings. I chose these pretty Indie and Chic pair because they are dainty yet detailed.

Casual Burgundy and Pink

This color palette also works for casual looks. For this first one, I paired a pink gingham shirt with an argyle sweater. I added a pop of burgundy with the purse. Keeping everything else neutral is key to making the pink and burgundy pop.

Polished whimsy in casual burgundy and pink outfit

For another casual look, I paired a pink tweed jacket with a burgundy top and jeans. The colors and the textures here give this outfit a lot of visual interest. I grounded the look with a pair of nude pumps.

For accessories, I added a twisted strand of pearls and my fun new Kate Spade watch.

Color Crush: Baby Blue and Burgundy

Hello friend! If you’ve read my Instagram style challenges post, then you already know I get a lot of style inspiration from them. One of the recent challenges hosted by my friend Katy from @wearwhatwhere, had a prompt of burgundy blues. In recent conversations, Katy had also shared with me her current favorite color pair: baby blue and burgundy. I was drawn to the colors and I knew I had to make a color crush post to share with you.

This color combination is an easy one to wear to work. Here I paired a baby blue striped shirt with a burgundy skirt.

Another way to wear this color combination to work is by pairing a burgundy plaid with a baby blue pencil skirt. The added bonus here is that this allows you to wear your summer items (such as your baby blue) into the fall. The color combination still works for fall because the rich burgundy hue carries the blue into the season.

I wore this color combination for this year’s thanksgiving outfit. It was seasonal yet unique, perfectly fitting my style.

Accessorize with Baby Blue and Burgundy

Sometimes, you can get the effect just from your accessories. Here I tied a burgundy square scarf around my blue purse. I wore these accessories with a simple grey dress. The pops of colors in the baby blue and burgundy brought a lot of personality to the neutral dress.

I’m so happy Katy mentioned this color combination. It is a beautiful palette to work with. I hope you have found some inspiration here. Let me know (and tag me on Instagram) if you try this combination.

As always, for those interested in shopping the post, I have listed any of the available items below.

Color Crush: Mustard Yellow and Red

Hello friend!

If you read my last post on why I participate in style challenges, you’d already know that I am often getting color combination inspirations from them. One such combination is mustard yellow and red. Prior to seeing that challenge prompt, I had never paired those two colors together. But because I enjoy trying new color combinations, I knew I had to try that one as well. I created one outfit and I loved how it turned out. Therefore, I set out to create a few more and to showcase them here for you. I hope you like these bright and eye-catching mustard yellow and red outfits just as much as I do.

mustard yellow and red outfit

The first look I wore was this one for the actual challenge prompt. I had purchased this beautiful mustard yellow and black floral top recently. Although I hand’t planned on wearing it with red, I decided to try the color combination out.

mustard yellow and red target and j crew outfit

It worked out beautifully. The colors popped against each other and made the outfit very eye-catching. For the accessories, I kept everything neutral in cognac and leopard.

mustard yellow target top and red j crew skirt

Because I liked the result of the first outfit so much, I decided to try other outfits with mustard yellow and red color combination. The next one was pretty much just a flip flop of the previous outfit, so I had a hunch it would work.

Target carwash skirt with mustard yellow and red

The color combination came through for me again. More importantly, I got to wear this pretty car wash skirt. In addition to the beautiful color, the skirt has a great cut and shape. You must see how pretty it is in motion. I tried to capture it below:

After the success of those two outfits, I decided to try something more adventurous. This time I chose two bold patterns which incorporated mustard yellow and red colors.

Pattern mixing red jcrew plai with floral anthropologie skirt, demonstrating mustard yellow and red color combination

I paired this red plaid shirt with a blue floral skirt. I added a pair of mustard shoes in addition to the mustard floral in the skirt.

Finally, for the last outfit, I turned to my mustard yellow Loft dress. This time, I wanted to play with proportions of the color palette. Therefore, I opted to just use a pop of red in the shoes.

Loft mustard yellow dress with red Kate Spade shoes

In contrast to the sweet floral print on the dress, the leopard print on the belt adds a bit of wild. I chose soft neutral jewelry to complement the outfit rather than distract from it. These neutral earrings and bracelet add the perfect finishing touches.

I hope you enjoyed reading this post just as much as I enjoyed writing it.  Moreover, I hope you are as convinced as I am that this color combination is a must. But most of all, I truly hope you attempt to wear this color palette. If you do, please tag me on Instagram so I can see the fabulous outfit you put together.
